Warthog HOTAS throttle problem.
charlesml3 replied to Rockeyes's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Make SURE there isn't another controller mapped to the throttle. For some reason, the default settings on my system mapped both the Hotas Warthog Throttle and my Saitek Pedals to the throttle. Funny how it did that when the Saitek Pedals didn't even have that axis. Anyway, you really want to go through and check everything. It seems that no matter how few axes your controller has, DCS will try to map functions that really don't make any sense. -Charles -
The P51D requires almost constant trimming. As fuel burns it'll need to be trimmed. If you add or reduce power it'll need to be trimmed. It isn't difficult, but something you'll be doing a LOT. I use the Warthog Hotas trim hat for this. For the rudder trim, I use LCtrl+LWD and LCtrl+RWD. Seems easy enough. -Charles

What Graphics Card ?
charlesml3 replied to [VAF] Shocker's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
GTX-680 is a great card. The GTX-690 is out there too and it's really two 680's in one. -Charles -
What's the Thrustmaster pinky switch for?
charlesml3 replied to Thick8's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I usually Pause TrackIR for landings. It eliminates the tendency to try to steer the aircraft with my head. With the P51D, I look down just a touch so the view grabs the airspeed indicator and then pause TrackIR there. Makes landings quite a bit easier. -Charles -
What's the Thrustmaster pinky switch for?
charlesml3 replied to Thick8's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
There's a very slick way to use the Joystick Pinky Lever for both TrackIR Center and TrackIR Pause. I have mine setup that way. Joystick Pinky Lever Short - TrackIR Center Joystick Pinkly Lever Long - TrackIR Pause -
I've read this several times now and cannot understand what you're saying here. What do you mean by "axis rotaries?" Right now I have the trim on the P51 set to the trim hat on the Warthog. If I hold it, it turns the trim wheel. I use LCtrl+LWD and LCtrl+RWD to trim the rudder. Thanks! -Charles

Wow. I thought this was going to be fairly easy. Three monitors? Sure, just select "3 Monitors" from the setup. Anyway, I've been reading up on all of this and it's a LOT more complicated than I thought. At any rate, I did set it up as you recommended. "One" monitor that spans the total resolution. That keeps the horizon nice and straight now. The only thing I hate is how it distorts the wings if you look left or right over your shoulder. Don't suppose you know any way around that, do you? Thanks a ton! -Charles

Gang, I wish I could have come up with a better title but I can't figure out how to explain this. So fairly generic setup: 3 x 24" Monitors. 3 across on one nVidia GTX 680. TrackIR 5. All I did was go into DCS and set "3 Monitors" and then select 5760x1200. Other options are: - Full Screen off - VSYNC off - TSSAA on So everything starts up just fine and I'm sitting on the ramp. This is where it's weird. The horizon looks like this: /-----\ The center monitor has the horizon right across. The left monitor has the horizon going from the upper right of the monitor down to the lower left. Opposite for the right monitor. If I pitch my head up and down, I can find a place where the horizon on all three monitors is streight all the way across. Like this : ------------- If I look down a bit, the horizon does this: \____/ If this doesn't make any sense, I can setup a digital camera and take a photo. Is it supposed to look like this? Thanks! -Charles

So I had this same problem. No matter where I was, weather, wind, weapons stores, no weapon stores... it didn't matter. My HUD was always skewed way over to the left. I messed around with it for days until I finally figured it out. It was my crappy joystick. I had some old Microsoft stick with the crap "twist" rudder and it was holding some right rudder all the time. I only figured this out by disabling the rudder completely. I got it to fly by setting a pretty big deadzone on the rudder but I'd already decided to pitch that joystick for a Warthog anyway. Hope this helps... -Charles

Rudder - necessary for Warthog?
charlesml3 replied to dr_After's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Are you sure about that? If SAS is keeping the turn coordinated then why does the turn/slip ball slide if I don't add rudder? Maybe SAS is adding some rudder in but all indications I'm getting from turn/slip and the HUD indicate that the turn is not coordinated. Or at least not fully coordinated. -Charles -
Rudder - necessary for Warthog?
charlesml3 replied to dr_After's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
OK, but you're putting the airplane into a weird crab every time you turn. Yea, it'll turn without rudder but the airplane will slip forcing you into a much wider arc. You can see this on the turn/slip indicator. The little ball will slide every time you turn without rudder input. In addition the rudder can be used to aim the gun. If you're off to the side a degree or two, you can just push the nose with the rudder instead of having to bank the entire aircraft. This sim is meant to be as close to real as we can get. No "real" A-10 pilot would fly without using the rudder. -Charles -
You actually looked pretty darned good for your third attempt. Way better than I did and I STILL have never connected with that stupid tanker. Since I have no real advice, the only thing I'd say is "Mute that Tacan beep." It's over on the Intercom panel. I actually assigned some key to it and setup a VAC command. I have "Mute ILS" and "Mute Tacan." -Charles

Add TrackIR Center & Pause on 1 Joystick button
charlesml3 replied to CubPilot's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yea I thought about that. Just going on the filesize alone, the compiled script is just as big as AutoHotKey.exe anyway. Now that doesn't mean they both use the same amount of resources, of course. At any rate, I'm going to leave it like it is for now since I may tweak it a bit more and it's easy to do with it still in a script. Just tell AKH to reload it. -Charles -
DCS World AFTER A-10C 1.1.1.1?
charlesml3 replied to charlesml3's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
Gotcha! That's exactly the information I needed. Thanks a ton! -Charles -
Searched and can't seem to find the answer. I have 1.1.1.1 running just fine but it appears most everybody does DCS World and then the A-10C module. Are there instructions somewhere for switching my config around to that? I apologize if I missed an obvious link, but I sure can't seem to spot it. Thanks! -Charles

Add TrackIR Center & Pause on 1 Joystick button
charlesml3 replied to CubPilot's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Borrowed the ideas and made it work for me... Gang, I read through this thread for a couple of days until I felt I understood all of the concepts and came up with what seems to me to be a pretty simple solution. Details: Joystick IDs: #1 : Warthog Throttle #2 : Saitek Pedals #3 : Warthog Stick Function Key Assignments: F14 - VAC Arm F15 - TrackIR Center (Code 126) F16 - TrackIR Lock (Code 127) For VAC, I set F14 in the Profile Builder. For TrackIR, I had to edit the .XML file in the profiles directory. The TrackIR GUI only lets you specify keys you can actually press, and my keyboard has no F15 or F16. Next, the AutoHotKey script. I went simple here. I just named it AutoHotkey.ahk which is the default that the program will load automatically. Here's the script: ; Joystick IDs: ; ; #1 : Warthog Throttle ; #2 : Saitek Pedals ; #3 : Warthog Stick ; ; Buttons: ; ; 3Joy4 : Warthog Stick Pinky Lever ; 1Joy3 : Warthog Throttle Mic switch Up 3Joy4:: KeyWait, 3Joy4 If (A_TimeSinceThisHotkey > 50 and A_TimeSinceThisHotkey < 1000) send {F15} ; Center TrackIR If (A_TimeSinceThisHotkey > 1000) send {F16} ; Pause TtrackIR 1Joy3:: Send {F14} ; Arm VAC That's it. I reduced the timings so the TrackIR Center would take just a tap on the pinky lever. The only other change was in VAC to have it use F14 to arm it. I suppose I could compile the script into a .exe file but I really don't see much value. I just start AutoHotKey and it loads the script automatically. If anyone sees potential for improvement, please feel free to make suggestions! Thanks a ton! -Charles -
Add TrackIR Center & Pause on 1 Joystick button

The .ZIP file attached to the original post seems to be bad. I've downloaded it several times now via Chrome and IE and WinZIP always reports it as corrupt. Can someone take a look and possibly reattach it? Thanks a ton! -Charles -
3 x 27" monitors on one gtx670 video card?
charlesml3 replied to charlesml3's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yes I understand the ports as I outlined in my original post. 2 dvi-d, 1 HDMI, 1 Display Port. I don't know if I can do three simultaneous monitors with 2 over dvi-d and one over HDMI. Thanks! -Charles -
3 x 27" monitors on one gtx670 video card?
charlesml3 replied to charlesml3's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Neither the HD8000 nor the Titan are even released yet. I'm looking more for tried and true over bleeding edge. Does anyone know if I can run two monitors over DVI-D and one over HDMI without issue? Thanks! -Charles -
3 x 27" monitors on one gtx670 video card?
charlesml3 replied to charlesml3's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Ok I just looked and 27" monitors at 2560x1440 are very expensive. More than $700 each. I'm going to stick with 1920x1200's Thanks! Charles -
3 x 27" monitors on one gtx670 video card?
charlesml3 replied to charlesml3's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
That's a good question as I haven't picked monitors yet. So it sounds like the question is a bit more complicated. If the monitors are 2560x1440 the I will need two video cards for sure. Will a pair of gtx670s do? Thanks! -Charles -
Gang I'm planning my first cockpit and I'm a bit confused about multiple monitors and video cards. I'm planning for 3 x 27" monitors on a Gtx670 4gb card. According to the specs this card will handle up to four monitors. So far so good. So the ports on the card are 2 x dual-channel DVI, 1 HDMI and 1 Display Port. So to do this with 1 card I'll have two of the monitors on the DVI ports and one on HDMI if I understand this right. Are there any problems with that kind of config? Would it be much better to go with two gtx670's? Thanks in advance! -Charles

If you could build a cockpit from scratch...
charlesml3 replied to charlesml3's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hey Anton, Thanks so much for the info. Lots of view, you were the only one to reply. I was confused by the video card because it says it supports 4 monitors, but it has two DVI, one HDMI and one something else. I couldn't understand if I could do two monitors via DVI and another via HDMI but it sounds like that's just fine. I used to scratch build PC's but I just quit doing that a few years ago. I found the price differences to be very small. I'd rather just let someone else build it from specs these days. I'm not going for super-realistic. Just good enough to make it fun and fairly easy. I figure 3 x 27-inch monitors should be pretty good. Thanks again! -Charles -
Gang, I've been flying one flight simulator or another since Microsoft's FS 1.0 and I've been into PC's since the original IBM PC so I do know my way around that stuff, but I'm fairly new to the multi-monitor, stick/throttle/rudder/sound setup. I'm pretty interested in building a cockpit out to fly the A-10C mostly. So here's what I have in mind so far: - Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog Stick and Throttle. - Saitek Pro Pedals -Track IR 5 - Volair Sim Cockpit I'll also be buying a new PC to drive this. I was looking at one of the gaming rigs over at Cyberpowerpc.com. One of the Core i7's on a Gigabyte Z77 MB. Questions: - Is 8 GB of RAM enough? I was planning to run Windows 7 x64. - I'm also planning three 24" or 27" monitors across the front. Do I need two video cards? If anyone has specific recommendations for video card(s), motheboards, etc. I'd love to hear them. Thanks a ton! -Charles
