Problems locking on in create fast mission.
311Gryphon replied to Dudester22's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Okay, verified. Your EO is off. When your MAV screen comes up (the black screen on right MFCD) hit OSB-6 where it says EO Off. Alternatively you can hit OSB-2 on the left MFCD to go into the MSL page. I only do that if I have the extra time and am in my DSMS anyway. But yeah, just hit OSB-6 on the right screen, wait 3 minutes, you'll see the camera turn on and you'll be good to go. After you hit it the 3 minutes will be on a timer in the lower right corner of that screen so you can keep an eye on it and start finding targets with your eyeball or TGP while it warms up. -

Your EO seeker head may be off on your Mavericks. When you switch to MAV mode from TGP the TGP view goes away and you will see what the seeker on the MAV sees. If it is turned off you will see the black screen. You can turn it on in the Mav screen or by going into MSL on your DSMS page and turning it on. It takes 3 minutes to "warm up" and can shut off on it's own (time out) if it is on for too long. I'm going to look at your pictures to verify but that may be what is going on. -
http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=73093 This thread has some good information in it. I was looking for another thread I thought I had in my favorites but I can't find it now. It had some great information on the last page about editing the bort numbers. The only way I know to do it is to edit the skin to be what you want it to be and make the lines in the .lua file that deal with the bort numbers to be "empty". I made a 2 part tutorial about skinning and the thread I posted has a really good one as well. As far as I know you can't change the location of the bort numbers in game, but using the .lua file you can change the color. Unless there are different files in the game that you can load with the .lua file that will change the size or location of the bort number? Someone else will certainly be better help than I on that one. But to my limited knowledge the only way to completely customize the bort number would be to reskin the plane, which isn't too hard. Good luck.

Problems locking on in create fast mission.

I agree with Bonsai, more information is needed to diagnose. I'm also not the best person to diagnose but I wanted to try to clarify some things. What is it that needs to lock on? When I think of things "snapping" to a target I can't think of a single thing in A-10C that would actually snap to a target. However, the AGM-65 will "lock on" (white cross hairs close) when it has a good recognition of something that is a target. Is this what you are referring to? Also, is this on every Fast Mission or just on one? If you generate a different one does the problem persist? I've had issues with my AGM-65s not locking until near or beyond minimum range. I've never gotten a Mav lock beyond probably 4 miles at the most and normally they lock much nearer than that no matter what my altitude or whether or not I'm flying directly at the target. I've even had some passes where it wouldn't lock at all. I'm assuming that the main reason for not getting a lock would be that the Mav seeker doesn't see enough contrast to recognize the target but I'm not sure. -
Ah, thanks. Good tip.

I've had this happen a great deal in the Instant Action missions. It got confusing because the Steerpoints would advance as soon as I flew over whether the targets at the Steerpoint were killed or not. Sometimes on the "easy" Instant Actions the voice over would say something like "Great job destroying those trucks. The next target is a....." and would act like I was ready to move on. I'd go to the next target and there would be nothing there. I'm guessing a single truck or unit of some kind was still alive at the previous target area. Frustrating.

I like the unused friction axis on the Thrustmaster Warthog. It works great and is very intuitive for zoom.

This is typically true in any business or line of work. Many terms may be similar or misused. I've had it happen very recently in regards to my job because another company's employee was using the term width when they should have used thickness. In this case, it's pretty well lined out which dimensions are labelled what but someone may or may not follow the guidelines. So therefore I have to assume it can happen in military applications as well although I'm under the impression that it shouldn't happen as much because there is more standardization, training, and discipline involved as there should be. In business you just waste time and maybe a little money sorting through confusion. In the military you could be wasting a life or two and that's a much larger issue. To me it means that there is a very large benefit to working closely with a person or group of people that you know very well because you will use terminology the same way and understand what people mean when they say things. And I just wanted to try this emoticon out :gun_rifle:

I'm kind of in the same boat. I try and try and try to find targets and unless there is a steer point or mark point right on top of them (and at ground level) or someone else's SPI already there that I can jump on....I can't find them. Even when I put them in there with the mission editor myself I have trouble finding targets. I don't want it to be too easy but it's very difficult. I also hate labels and refuse to use them. Maybe I should until I get a little better. But anyway, I've played several of the single player missions and I do okay up until the point where the targets aren't exactly where the mission plan says they are. That's okay, because again I like realism and a little bit of a challenge. It just gets frustrating to scan and scan and scan and not find anything only to drop in and purposely allow yourself to become a target so you can hopefully see a missile launch, defeat the missile, and refine you scan to the direction the missile came from. I still can't find targets after that; however. So.....I'll keep experimenting!

Dynamic Campaign Discussion Thread
311Gryphon replied to winchesterdelta1's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Surprise by innovation is certainly a key element but a true combat sim should incorporate at least the idea of an ever changing and "infinite outcome" battlefield. Obviously this is impossible in a game, but the idea in the modern era of video games is to merge a really well made world model with well made AI, good mechanics, and some type of trigger and initialization combination that allows what happens now directly impact what is available to happen later. This combination of things (and probably a lot more since I'm not very versed in the detailed inner workings of video games) could, potentially, help the game evolve into something dynamic. In some cases it doesn't even have to be dynamic it simply must feel dynamic. Much like the original Operation Flashpoint which was ahead of its time by a long margin. The campaign never changed but the campaign reflected a changing battlefield and some unit values were carried over from one "mission" to the next. Additionally, the world was open thus you could more or less play each "mission" differently than you did the last time. The end goal was the same and the "win parameters" were typically the same, so you had to accomplish the same things but you could do it differently at times. Now, applying that to DCS is a bit different because of the fact that there are more details (it appears) in the flight models than there are in, for instance, the AI. That's okay because A-10C is the most fun I've had flying a simulation EVER. And I once flew cross country from Chicago Midway to San Francisco in MS Flight Sim 3. What a boring flight. I was that dedicated to trying to fly a simulator. My point is that I agree with the OP that it would be cool to eventually merge all these different modules into a large single player, co-op, or multiplayer battlefield that was either superficially dynamic (the battlefield changes but each time you play through the same campaigns it changes in the same way) or realistically dynamic (mission success in one area changes the battlefield one way and mission failure does as well with reversible outcomes that play out over a longer period of time with no definite end until one side has complete control). That's my 2 or more cents. -
I may have to run through that tutorial again but I believe it mentioned it although it wasn't at all clear. Maybe I'm wrong....I'm struggling to think back. Of course, it could be that I watched a YouTube video that warned me of the wait time and I'm projecting that into the tutorial as well. So you could be right. And if you are, they most certainly should annotate that.

This is something I've wondered before. It seems that when watching various videos where I'm lucky enough to hear the radio chatter on the chatter isn't all the same. Maybe it is and my untrained ears don't pick up on it, but it sounds slightly different. Therefore I've often wondered if perhaps it's the old issue of working with people closely and learning the nuances of their version of the proper terminology that makes a military machine well oiled. Somewhat like members of sports team learning to work together well, or even business associates. Sometimes there are little "guidelines" for various occupations but every place that employs those guidelines does so slightly differently. So whether that is true or not, it makes a lot of sense.

Thinking of buying this but is it really hard to learn?
311Gryphon replied to Dudester22's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Not all the tutorials are that easy to follow, intuitive, or even possible early on. I actually gave up on the tutorials after a bit. They are still very helpful but at a point I had to go learn some things from the manual, from this forum, and from YouTube and then go try them myself. I'm planning on jumping back into some tutorials now that I've actually been flying around and blowing things up to try to learn better ways to do things and refresh those things that I did learn. Basically, some of the tutorials may require some previous knowledge that I did not have at the time I went through them the first time. But that's not bad at all. I also took a while to learn the cold start from memory and part of that was because I was a bit frightened by the prospect of moving on to more complex things so I just kept doing cold starts. Suddenly I was able to do it with no problems. Then I flew my first co-op mission with a friend and I was able to get a problem free start and he wasn't. It made me feel pretty good sitting there watching planes fly over the base and watching the sun go down for a few moments while he tried to troubleshoot his plane. You're going to love your first Mav shot. -
Not to get too far off subject, but the online firearms enthusiasts are quite the same if not worse. Hold your pinky in the wrong place while shooting or squint your left eye a little too tight...or better yet say a firearms manufacturer's name with a different accent, and people are going to jump on you. I've had a look at several of the brevity documents but without getting in and using it much of it is lost on me. It will take time.

Thanks, Crescendo. That clears some things up. I'm more of an interested bystander trying to understand what is going on in the game and some of the conversation was confusing me based on the fact that what is being discussed just doesn't seem like such a big deal to me. Anyway, thanks.

Interrogative: what would be the call if a ground based air defense radar is searching, has spotted you, or is tracking you? I have no real world experience but it seems that mud spike is hardly less brief than spike. Obviously it is longer but it's a very short syllable and I can't think of too much that it could be confused with. But like I said, I've only got game experience and that doesn't count for much. Thanks.

Interesting. I'm still learning some of the actual employment so this is good information. I also believe I may be building bad habits. I use CCRP most of the time just because I like it and it works. But I've also used CCIP in the exact same way I've used CCRP (flying very high in level flight) and it has worked almost every time. While I know they aren't the exact same thing they seem to operate very similarly for me. I tend to stay way up in the sky because I'm pretty bad at searching for targets and I miss AA quite a lot still. So it sounds like I'm not correctly using the CCIP even though it still works. So when using CCIP should I be in a shallow dive looking at the target?

NICE! I believe taking a nap would be better than solitaire...maybe they could hook up some Chip's Challenge on that baby.

Emergency restart - what am I doing wrong?
311Gryphon replied to latearrival's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
This is an old thread so sorry if it doesn't need to be brought back up. Also, there are other tutorials that I think I've seen but I did one the other day that is kind of rough. Maybe it could help. One thing on the APU restart is that I've never had it restart the first time. I'm not sure if there is a step backwards in the manual or if I'm just doing it wrong but after starting the APU I'll motor the engine operating switch then set the throttle to idle and flip the engine operating switch back to NORM. Nothing happens until I set the throttle back to off then back to idle. I'll almost always get an engine restart at that point. The windmill has always been effective for me. I've yet to get it to not work even when I failed to set my throttle to idle before holding the Engine Op switch to ignite. I had to level off once at about 1,000 feet or lower and then noticed the throttle was off. I set it to idle, hit ignite, and got engine start. Good luck. -

I haven't played on a public server yet, but it's nice to hear that the community sounds rather forgiving of new and less experienced players. By the sounds of things, you'll only get treated poorly if you are griefing folks or being a Mk 1 D-Bag. In other multiplayer games I've frequented it isn't so. So I have to say thanks to the community for being so cool. -
I was expecting 3.1. Wow!

I tried FaceTrackNoIR and it "worked" and in some ways tracked better than TrackIR (which surprised me). But it would lose me like any tracking will if you move to extreme head positions and it would not pick me back up very easily and rarely in the same way. TrackIR picks back up almost immediately so I can turn around to talk to someone while I'm flying and not worry about having to pause the game when I turn back around to wait for the tracking to pick back up. It is also a little easier to mess with and took less tweaking to get working the way I wanted it. I don't know how many hours I spent messing with curves in FaceTrackNoIR. So yeah, having tried both I still recommend TrackIR if a person has the money. -
