I've noticed that on the instant missions where the Corsair is airborne , the aileron trim is already set to the right. This makes me think that the Corsair must have needed right aileron trim constantly during a flight to counter powerful torque to left. During my flights though , this trim setting makes me want to set it back to the center because the plane always rolls to the right. I'm wondering what's right, was constant right aileron trim really needed? So far, I haven't really noticed a huge amount of pull to the left, even on take off.

I don't have force feedback but I just checked & the force feedback option was checked. I unchecked it & will see if it has any effect.

I thought the problem was something like that because I had been pretty lax in following correct landing procedures (you were the most helpful to me in pointing that out to me btw, so I thank you for that). But since then , I have been very careful about landing procedures ,including putting the gear down first before any flaps. Now I feel really certain though that this problem is caused by a software bug. When this happens to me, the severe right roll is apparent as soon as I spawn into the mission (it's an airs spawn mission that I made for myself to practice landings) . Whenever I get this severe right roll, I know that only one gear will come down. It happens only once in a great while, although I have had it happen a couple of times in a row. Another weird thing I have noticed is that when this happens, the track of it flickers. All my other tracks don't flicker like that.
-
This is what has happened for me too, very occasionally. A very hard roll to the right with no control input , then when lowering the gear, only one gear comes down. I can capture a screen shot of the one gear, but then when I play the track, it shows both gear down for some reason.
-
Thanks for the advice & you were right , I was not following the checklist. I will follow & hopefully , no more problems with the gear. One other thing I have been wondering about & I'm not sure this is the right forum to ask , but it's this: On many of my carrier landings I notice what looks like pieces of my damaged aircraft fly up in the air. I'm thinking I must have touched down too fast or hard. When I look at the F2 view though, I don't see any damage except for sometimes missing the tail hook (the plane continues to operate as if it still has a good tail hook though & the whole plane seems to be fine). Is this a work in progress on the damage model?

Here's the track in question. F4U - 04 - Carrier Landing one gear down.trk All the shakiness in the track didn't seem apparent to me during the actual flight. I did notice difficulty in turning the plane though.
-
I know this sounds pretty strange, but I had another instance of one gear not coming down. The plane didn't fly normally again, with one wing wanting to dip. I verified only one gear down on the F2 view. I raised the gear & lowered them again, but one gear still didn't come down. I was all set to send this track . When I watched the track though, it showed both gear extended. I wish I had taken another screen shot at the time so it doesn't look like I'm nuts. I did get a chance to check the hydraulic pressure this time though & it was normal.
-
Thanks for this tip, I didn't even think to look at the gauge. When or if it happens again I will check that . I'll also remember to save the track.
-
Sorry I didn't save the track, next time I will include it so I'm not ashamed of myself throwing up a post like this. But for the information needed , this was from an air-spawn mission I made to practice carrier landings . No other aircraft involved , no take off damage.
-
Several times now I've had one of the landing gear not extend for landing. The plane flies differently too ,as if only one gear is down.

Thanks, I saw that the engine management has already been discussed. I guess I just just wanted to point out that these training instructions from the developer are very incorrect.
-
I tried the carrier landing training mission a month or so ago & thought I would repeat it because I'm trying to practice my landings. This time, since the last update, I'm wondering if the training instructions need to be updated too. They say to close the cowl flaps & there is no mention of the oil cooler flap, which is closed. A few times doing this training mission my engine quickly seizes up before I can get to the carrier. Are these settings correct for a carrier landing?
-
Thanks, that helps! I had been watching the cylinder head temps & not the oil temp. I still am surprised though that the cylinder temps fluctuate really rapidly, with what looks like over -cooling happening quickly, but I don't have a real Corsair in my garage to go test. I tried a takeoff with less manifold pressure & it went better too. It helps to have someone critique as I try to learn this. I still seem to tear off my hook many times when landing even when I remember to unlock the tailwheel.
-
I have been trying to practice carrier approaches & have found that my engine quits most of the time after just one or two approaches. I see that the cylinder head temperature drops very easily with the rpm at 2400 & the manifold between 20 & 30 usually. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've tried both leaving the cowl flaps alone after spawning into the carrier landing mission & also continually adjusting them , but the engine always seems to quit. I had to give up for now on the Corsair School campaign carrier qualification mission since the engine doesn't last long enough for me to do 5 landings (not that I could do that many anyway, I'm new to this, but the engine thing makes it doubly hard). Here's a track. Thanks in advance for any tips. F4u engine quit.trk

Just want to say thanks for this campaign! I'm really enjoying it, it's a great way to learn this plane!

Here's the track with the problem. I think maybe the mistake I made was from copying & pasting instead of extracting the folder files. F4u campaign .trk

After reinstalling the campaign, everything seems to work OK .

I've tried the first & second missions, but the voice instructions don't seem to always progress to the next instruction. In the first start up mission, after completing an instruction , the next instruction sometimes doesn't happen for a minute or two. The mission didn't say when it was completed, I just guessed it was done. In the second taxi & take off mission, no instructions happened after the control input check before take off. After waiting a couple of minutes & no more instructions happening, I went ahead & took off & landed ,then quit the mission to find out I had failed. Maybe there's a problem with my campaign install, I want this to work though because I think it's a great idea.

I think watching your videos has helped me, Holbeach. I can do at least half- way decent landings now , over half the time , although I'm starting to realize that in real life the RAF might not have granted me 2 or 3 hundred airplanes to crash while I got the technique down. I think one of the problems I had was flaring too high, misjudging my height over the runway & then having the plane drop out of the air with not enough speed. I haven't tried landing a heavily loaded Mosquito yet, but now I'm trying to slowly introduce a crosswind. This will be a test of the landing gear. The gear seems like it might be modeled to be really too fragile, but I'll never know . Anyway, I appreciate everyone's discussion here.
-
Holbeach, those were really decent landings! I wish I could have a landing that good. If you ever have a chance, I'd like to see a video with the right control + enter control indicator box open so I can try and copy your input procedure. What's especially been giving me a lot of trouble lately is keeping the plane straight on the runway after touchdown. I'd like to see how you do that.
-
Lately I've been trying landing with about 30 % flaps down instead of fully down & I think it might be better. I think it gives me a little better speed control after the flare & lets the plane settle more gradually (at least this is what I believe so far). I still have a great deal of difficulty most of the time with keeping the plane straight on the runway after touchdown though. Also, a few times the plane has nosed over just before coming to a stop even though I have the stick fully pulled back & no brakes applied. I don't understand.
-
Oh no, I'm talking about landing the plane , not taxiing. You're right , I never did try taxiing with one engine, I wouldn't know how to . I would like to know if other people have mastered the landings or find them extremely difficult.
-
Did something change in the last year with the Mosquito flight model? The last time I tried the Mosquito was quite a while ago but I was able to have pretty fair landings at least half the time. I was even able to do some good landings with one engine out. Now though, I've tried landing about a hundred times & they've all been bad. It seems utterly impossible. I try to cross the threshold at about 110-120 mph and set the plane down as gently as possible but it never seems to turn out well. 90% of the time I bend the props & gear , but if I am able to keep the props & gear in good shape , the plane doesn't want to stay straight on the runway & I end up nosing over. Could the real Mosquito have been that fragile? Any ideas about what I'm doing wrong? best one so far Mosquito landing.trk

I agree with Jmig. Because DCS is a study level sim, I've always thought that step by step training campaigns would be most helpful for all DCS aircraft. You tube videos are good, but I always feel like I'm jumping into the middle of a text book to learn one specific thing about complicated planes and their weapons systems. A structured training campaign , telling you in what order you need to learn an aircraft & its systems, and taking you through them with lessons would really be a huge help to newbies like me, or at least just me.
