  1. Hmm, OK thanks. I was actually taking off at about 250, but I'll try faster than that. The flaps are already set when I start the mission so I presume they're in the take off position as I'm on the runway ready to take off? My left engine doesn't always blow though, other times I just get a Master Caution warning with that annoying woman saying something in Russian over and over... When that happens I've looked outside using F2 but I can't spot what's wrong. I did manage to get off the ground successfully once though with no Master Caution or any other problems, or so it seemed, but then I had a weird beeping sound (not the Master Caution) going off all the time I was flying - no idea what that was?! And it doesn't help that despite selecting English in the options the cockpit textures all have russian labels on the knobs/dials/switches panels etc... I've attached two tracks to show you what I mean wrt to the failures. WTH is the exploding left engine and WTH2 is the Master Caution warning. Tracks.rar
  2. Hello Just recently started with DCS World, have been playing DCS Black Shark but wanted to see if DCS World would run on my rig to get an indication of the FPS I'm likely to get with DCS Black Shark 2... Anyhoo, long story short I'm having a problem getting off the ground in one of the single missions. The mission is Long Day. I've done the tutorial for taking off to familiarise myself with getting the SU-25 off the ground and I took off without a problem first time. When I get control of the plane at the start of Long Day I check to make sure my flaps are down, and they appear to be already. Then, whilst holding the wheel brake, I throttle up to 100%. Then I have to let go of the wheel brake because the plane rolls forwards anyway. When I reach over 230 I gently pull back on the stick as instructed in the tutorial (I knew that anyway as I've played IL2 1946 for years so I know the basics of how to fly a plane). It's at that point, or just before, that something goes wrong and no matter what I do when I'm airborne I either explode or end up crashing!! I've checked the replay of one of my attempts and it appears the left engine is blowing up on me and is a massive fireball!!! So, what am I doing wrong?
  3. Having said the above I might give BS2 a shot if I can round up some money... ...because I've just spent a little time tweaking DCS World using some files I found in a thread on these forums (thanks to msalama for his thread here) and I can actually achieve playable FPS with the SU-25 and it looks good so it probably is worth upgrading to Black Shark 2 - I just hope I don't take a hit on fps with BS2 compared to just plain DCS World. I do have a problem with a mission, taking off in fact, but I'll post a thread about that elsewhere...
  4. Interesting. I think if you compare the size of what's shown in cockpit from a screenshot to a 480x640 area in an editing app such as photoshop you get different results depending on the aspect ratio you've set. I use 16/9 (or 1.7777777778 as I've put it in the config files), but I noticed that if I use the aspect ratio for my combined resolution (2.61111111) the ABRIS shown in the cockpit (and screenshots I think) is narrower. Could be wrong though...
  5. v1.01. In 1920x1080 (native res on my primary monitor) on a single screen, or 2820x1080 when I use 2 screens, the 2nd to display ABRIS/SHKVAL so that I can see them better. I tried upgrading to v1.02, but recently found out that with 2 monitors the NVG is broken (it zooms the view in to a size that is presumably the combined resolution (2820x1080 in my case) and thus you can't see all the screen, when you press H to turn on NVG and affects the view in an odd way when panning) so I've gone back to v1.01. I'm also having to use SoftTH v2.08 to get my dual monitor setup working properly, but I've tried without SoftTH and the issue with the SHKVAL still occurs so it's not related to using SoftTH. EDIT - I've also just done a test using 1 monitor only at 1280x720 and the same issue happens. My general framerate also doesn't differ between 720p and 1080p. I'd also rather not go any lower than that (especially as I want to run dual screens as I'd have to change my desktop resolution on both monitors every time I play BS1 because ATI CCC doesn't seem to scale the image to full screen when using 2 monitors!)
  6. Thanks, I've done that already. My cockpit displays are at 256 resolution. If I pan around with the SHKVAL, on that mission at least, I get even worse fps, it drops to 15 or so.
  7. Hello I've just been doing some frame rate comparisons and I've noticed that when I uncage the SHKVAL I lose roughly 50% of my framerate. In the "how to take off and blow stuff up" tutorial mission, just sitting on the pad, I get 60 fps with the ABRIS on it's menu (the one you get when it starts up and 50 FPS when I switch it to the map mode, and then when I uncage SHKVAL, even with the ABRIS on it's start menu, my framerate drops to around 30fps!! This is less than ideal because I can imagine that in the campaigns I'll have less than 30fps in some situations and I know that low fps causes input lag for me. It doesn't seem to be related to using multiple monitors either as I've tried it with a single monitor and the same issue occurs. Is there anyway I can fix this, or alleviate the problem? FYI here's my rig specs - Mobo - Gigabyte GA-880GM-USB3 RAM - 8GB 1333mhz GPU - Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 1GB CPU - AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition @ 3.2GHZ OS - Win 7 Home Premium 64bit.
  8. I'll see about using gamebooster but in the past it's not done a whole lot for me. Yes money is a problem, even in an xmas sale I don't have the money to upgrade to BS2. Plus I recently downloaded DCS World, tried the SU-25 and I was getting at best 20-30 fps. Even if I did have the money I can't justify paying for an "upgrade" when I get almost as bad if not worse fps and I definitely can't justify upgrading my PC to an I5 CPU (which would also require a change of mobo)!
  9. Thanks. I've tried that and it still looks a little narrow compared to what is on the cockpit shown on my primary monitor. I took a screen shot and did a comparison (using photoshop) of 480x640 vs what I see in the cockpit on my primiary monitor and from doing that I've settled on a resolution of 530x640, that seems to look about right on my 2nd monitor compared to what's in the cockpit on my primary monitor.
  10. Hello I'm trying to get my 2nd monitor (which is in portrait orientation) just right for displaying both ABRIS and SHKVAL, but I'm having a problem getting the aspect ratio right for the ABRIS display. The monitor is running at a resolution of 1080 tall and 900 wide (it's native resolution is 1440x900 but a multi monitor setup doesn't work properly with that because my primary monitor is 1920x1080 and 1440 in portrait is taller than 1080). The SHKVAL is set to be in the bottom half, so 540 tall by 900 wide and this looks fine. ABRIS however does not look fine at 540 tall by 900 wide. It does however look OK when at 1080 tall by 900 wide. So I thought that halving the width, thus making the size of the ABRIS display 540 tall by 450 wide, would work. However it doesn't, ABRIS looks too narrow. Please can someone tell me what aspect ratio or resolution the ABRIS display uses so that I can try to figure out how to replicate that in a 540 tall by 900 wide space on my 2nd monitor? Also, is it possible to display ABRIS/SHKVAL on another computer's screen via a network (you can do it in games such as IL2 via UDP and a particular app, although I forget the exact details of how) - I'm thinking of getting a 9" or 10" Android based tablet for ABRIS that I can connect to my network via wifi (or if possible cat5 cable)? Thanks in advance.
  11. I was having issues setting up a dual monitor setup with ABRIS/SHKVAL on my 2nd monitor to my left, not so much now, after some trial and error. I resolved the issues I was having by moving my monitor in ATI CCC to the left, deleting the SoftTH config file I had originally generated and used a new one. Seems to work well, it's a joy actually being able to see targets on the SHKVAL and seeing my waypoints properly on the map. 2 slight issues still remaining that I'd like to resolve - 1. The FPS counter (that you get when pressing CTRL+Pause) is not displaying, presumably because now it's hidden under the ABRIS which occupies the top half of my 2nd monitor that is to the left of me. Is there a way to move the FPS counter so that I can see it (like you can the controls indicator box)? 2. When I use the phantom monitor fix .exe file it pushes the point where the mouse thinks centre of the monitor is to the left. Thus the mouse is offset and if I go past a certain point (a tiny bit over halfway across to the right of my main monitor) I can't click on the cockpit because the mouse seems to think it's outside of my monitor and on the desktop!?! Doesn't happen when I don't use the phantom monitor fix, but I get an extra 10fps using that so is there anyway to resolve that issue? Thanks in advance. EDIT - nevermind. I seem to have solved both of those issues, but in a rather cack-handed fashion. I've moved the 2nd monitor back to the right in ATI CCC, set the ABRIS/SHKVAL to start at X pos 0 and moved the main view in by 900 (the width of my 2nd monitor) so it starts on my primary screen, but I used the SoftTH config that had been created when the 2nd monitor was on the left in ATI CCC. The phantom monitor fix now works fine and the FPS counter displays fine also, as does the mission text/comms, and NVG works fine also (now that I've downgraded to 1.01c as it's irreparably broken in 1.02 it seems). In fact the only thing wrong with the setup I have is that my monitor which is physically on my left is on the right as far as my computer is concerned. Surely they could have made setting up dual/multi monitors a whole lot easier?!
  12. Yes. Thanks. I don't currently have the money however. My specs though are these Mobo - Gigabyte GA-880GM-USB3 RAM - 8GB 1333mhz GPU - Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 1GB CPU - AMD Phenom II 955 Black Edition @ 3.2GHZ OS - Win 7 Home Premium 64bit. I realise I'm probably limited a bit by my AMD CPU (although according to the "recommended requirements" on the BS1 e-shop page I shouldn't be?!), but I'm just looking at getting rid of the jaggies I get (even in 1080p) and making the dials a bit more readable without losing too much, if any, fps.
  13. Hello I've been enjoying this game (BS1) a while now, after initially shelving it due to not understanding how to even start the helo, but I'm wondering about improving some graphical aspects. In particular I'd like to improve the readability of the cockpit dials and remove jaggies. I currently run the game in the native resolution (1080p) of my 19" TV. After going through a tweak guide I found (on this site I believe) on average I get 40-50fps after changing parameters in various config files of the game. Most of the time over open country I get 50-60 but in some missions with built up areas (such as the single mission Altitude) I get as little as 18!! Can I set the dials to 1024 without losing FPS (assuming that makes them more readable)? Is there a good/recommended way to get rid of jaggies (on an ATI 5870 1GB GPU) without losing FPS - I've tried some AA via ATI tray tools and I've currently got it set to 2x Edge Detect but that doesn't seem to make all that much of a difference - so what's the best AA setting? Also, when I started a campaign last night (the first in the list, called Deployment I think), the speech of the guy in the other helo was in Russian so as I'm a monoglot Englishman I had no idea what he was saying and reading the text is rather cumbersome when trying to fly, so is there any way to get that speech in English? Thanks in advace for any tips on this.
  14. Thanks. I've had a look and it looks reasonable. Thrustmaster do a joystick with mini-throttle that is shaped just like the T-Flight Hotas X's joystick, and it's a bit cheaper than the Logitech Attack 3 here in the UK. Really wish I hadn't put the screw through the main cable in the T-flight Hotas X throttle base though, I had the detent all nicely smoothed off so that the throttle slides nice and smoothly, and all I had to do was put the potentiometer back in it's slot properly and screw the bottom of the throttle base back on!! It's still usable though, the joystick part works fine. And I forgot it has a twist axis on the joystick that I can use as a rudder axis and use the rocker on the throttle handle as the throttle instead. All buttons appear to function OK on the throttle base so long as I have the wire in a certain position (some times button 9 is always on once pressed). I've stripped back the rubber/plastic sleeving around the cable in the throttle base (and pulled the cable right through so it's outside of the throttle base for easy manipulation) and I can see I've clipped a couple of the wires but not broken them completely, hence the need for the cable to be in a specific position to avoid button 9 being always on, and I've completely broken a yellow wire, which obviously is attached to the potentiometer on the throttle handle and controls the Z axis because that's the axis that is non-functional. IF I can bridge that wire I might be able to fix the Z axis so I can use the throttle lever. But I don't really like my chances of doing so because I'm useless at doing such things. I might be able to scavenge some wire from an old USB cable but I don't have a soldering iron. Still, for the moment I can just about play this game (and others) using the twist axis on the stick and the rocker for throttle, although it's not quite as accurate. At least I can fly until I have saved up for a replacement T Flight Hotas X or even better a Saitek X45/X52 (which I've been planning on upgrading to anyway)...
  15. Throttle on the hotas x doesn't work now and a couple of the buttons register as throttle as well as their own inputs, and I can't fix it. Yes I could use the keyboard, and possibly an xbox 360 gamepad, but it's just not the same. Have to wait till xmas now to get a new hotas. Probably get a Saitek X45/X52 this time though.
  16. Thanks for the replies guys and thanks to IronMaiden for the facetracknoir files however I don't think I'll be flying for a couple of months now... I was removing the detent on the throttle of my Thrustmaster T Flight Hotas X and all was going well, but then I came to screw the base back on... ...and I must have had the main cable under the screw hole because I've driven a hole right through it and severed some of the wires, so now the throttle doesn't work and a couple of the buttons do odd things. I can't repair the break in the wires myself either because they're too thin/small and I don't have any spare wire or solder or any tools to do it with. So it looks like I'll have to save up £50 and buy a new stick or at least a throttle section with as many buttons... Grrr.:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:
  17. Thanks. I don't have even $20 (or in my case £12) to pay out for something that I might have to shelve for a couple of years whilst I save for a new PC. Yeah I had those on, I figured from reading the mission notes I'd need those on so I set them on just ahead of getting to the mountain range. Not really bothered though, I'll have another go at the mission some time. I'll just put it down to being a noob. Yes I may have that option checked. I'll bear that in mind. What happens if I turn that option off, can I then get away with not centring the pedals (I use the rocker on my T-flight HOTAS X's throttle) or stick?
  18. Hmm yeah, I thought as much. Real shame because I was looking at the Huey and drooling... I was playing the Altitude mission yesterday (and failed, dunno what happened but all of a sudden my bird started rotating and then fell out of the sky, I had all the de-icers on as well. I checked and I didn't look as though I'd been hit?!) Anyway I was getting 18-20 fps at the start at the airfield but 50-60 when I got over the mountain area. In the mission from the tutorial "Or: A Dummy's Guide to DCS: Black Shark" that I've been playing the past few days to familiarise myself with the game (I bought the game about a year ago, but failed to even get the cannon to fire when I first played the game and I shelved it) from what I notice using the ingame counter I only get on average 35 fps, more around 40 at the helipad when stationary and 25 fps at minimum in some parts of the mission. Still playable, I don't notice any input lag, but more fps would be better. The T-flight HOTAS X comes with no software to speak of, just a control panel snap-in that shows you if the axis/buttons are working and a mapping function on the actual stick itself so you can remap buttons and axis (i.e swap L1 for L2, or X axis for Y axis). Sounds interesting, that's exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for - 1 button to cycle through the 3 weapons (inner pylon, outer pylon and cannon). I'll go look for some more info on TARGET. Currently I've remapped the buttons on my stick so I have the 3 buttons on the side of the throttle as the weapons, and collective brake and uncage Shkval (O) on the buttons on the front of the throttle, I'm happy with that but I'm sure I could find 2 other functions I could map to the stick/throttle, so freeing up 2 buttons would be great... EDIT - looks like the TARGET software doesn't support the el-cheapo T-Flight HOTAS X, just the Thrustmaster T16000M stick and the more expensive HOTAS like the Cougar and Warthog. Shame, that would have been perfect. One other thing, and something rather annoying, is that every now and then my joystick stops responding, mostly seems to happen after I've pressed the trim button to set trim on the stick, and/or while holding the collective brake, but then a while later (probably something like 20 seconds, I've not counted to check) it starts responding again, usually after I've been yanking it about and I then end up moving the heli wildly, and possibly linked to releasing the collective brake/moving the throttle. It's not a problem with the stick itself in terms of hardware issues as far as I can tell as it's not happening in Arma 2, Arma 3 or Take on Helicopters. I think I've read something about this but I can't find the threads I was reading the other day. Anyone ever come across such behaviour, any idea why it happens, and is there anyway to solve it?
  19. Thanks, that might be helpful. I'm only running mine at 1920x1080 on a single monitor. I can't reduce the resolution for an fps gain because I get a black border around the edge due to ATI's drivers not applying image scaling properly in Windows 7, and I've tried all the old wives tales about reducing resolution to lower than native etc. to resolve it but it just doesn't seem to work. I'm not complaining that I only get 35fps on average, it actually plays nice and smooth so far. I just think that for a game that is 5ish years old I should be getting more from it. One thing I've learnt from racing game such as GT Legends, GTR2 and rFactor is that higher fps makes you better because the higher framerate allows you to react more quickly, or at least doesn't delay your inputs, or something like that - hence the reason I'm looking for more fps in DCS Black Shark 1, so that I can react quickly if I need to.
  20. Cool. That's what I thought. I tried slewing it with the helmet sight, but using my mouse, and it was slower than using just the d-pad and no helmet sight, because of the inaccurate/twitchy mouse movement when looking at the Shkval screen and trying to make small adjustments - I couldn't get the aiming box on target at all using the mouse. I've tried FacetrackNOIR in this game also, as well as several others, and it's fairly useless most of the time because it moves even if I'm not and has a habit of stopping functioning altogether, so using a head track system for me is not possible (unless I shell out for TrackIR or DIY it with Freetrack). Using the d-pad on it's own to slew actually seems to work quite well for me, so far.
  21. That's what I've tried yes. Yes it does do the head movement. Yes, that's what I now do after finding out "d-pad + O + HMS" doesn't work. So basically the helmet sight is purely there (besides simulating the real thing) for people who have head tracking (or for those who wish to use the mouse) and there is no loss in not using it?
  22. Apologies, I have been using the search function but I haven't come across any definitive answers to a few questions I have re. Black Shark 1. So, here goes. 1. I've followed the Tweak Guide Alpha (sorry I forget the name of the creator) but I'm still not happy with the framerate I'm getting. My rig is this AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE @3.2ghz ATI 5870 1GB 8GB RAM @ 1333mhz Windows 7 64bit 7200rpm HDD On average I'm only getting 35 fps! Apart from the Tweak Guide Alpha, and buying new hardware (which I gather from some threads isn't a guarantee of good fps) is there anything else I can do (I've done a defrag and other maintenance on my PC btw) without lowering settings further than in the Tweak Guide Alpha? 2. I'm thinking of upgrading to DCS World/Black Shark 2/UH-1H Huey but given that I'm getting decidedly average/low fps in Black Shark 1, will I get even lower fps in Black Shark 2? 3. What's the point in the helmet sight? I don't have Track IR (nor Freetrack, but I do have FacetrackNOIR although it has a habit of moving even though I'm not so I don't use it), so at the moment I have the Shkval slew controls mapped to my flight stick "d-pad" hat switch, but when I try to use that in conjunction with the helmet sight and holding O it doesn't move the Shkval view, I have to use the mouse instead (and that's rather poor as it's inaccurate/twitchy in the Shkval screen), however I can move the Shkval view using the hat switch if I don't use the helmet sight and hold O. So that's what I've been doing, targeting by just using my flight sticks hat switch to move the Shkval view around. If I can do that I can't see the point in the helmet sight - am I missing something? 4. How do I cycle through weapons using just one button? I'd like to set one on my flight stick (Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X) (although I'm running out of buttons) so that I can cycle from cannon, to inboard pylon then to outboard pylon (or any other combination of that order, whichever is possible) - having looked through the controls list I can't immediately see if that's possible - is it?
