  1. Sometimes you can make it work as secondary, sometimes not. I can't remember how mine was set up at the time, but often I have to do one or the other to make a program work. If you run the game and it shows up on your main screen, you'll have to set the rift as Primary, sadly.
  2. Check the Rift's resolution through windows (right click on desktop) and make sure it is set to 1920x1080. You'll need to be in extended mode, not direct.
  3. Hey, so someone DID see my video :) Yep, looks like your game isn't running at 1920x1080. Did you remember to change it in the settings?
  4. Thanks a lot hegykc! That's exactly what I'd needed. Though in my case I have good news! It was a bad solder. In my foolishness, I couldn't fathom that they'd screw up something like that, but the brown wire was hovering a mm away from its contact. I put a dab of new solder to connect the gap and it works! I know, I was a fool for not taking it apart sooner, but I was so sure it was a switch failure. I took high res pictures, but it looks like negykc has us covered, as I didn't dare take apart the switch housing. Good chance you've just got a wire not making contact BIGNEWY, get in there and take a look :) Hardest part is taking apart the paddle assembly without losing any of the tiny bits.
  5. Oh good, it isn't just me! Though I'd trade my pinkey switch for the trigger switch any day :P Here is another picture I found showing the inside. I'm about to open mine up to take a closer look. I'll take some better pictures.
  6. Hello! Would anyone happen to know the specifications for the trigger switch in the TM Warhog stick? I'm talking about the first stage of the trigger pull. I love my TM HOTAS, but I've had some bad luck. First, my master lighting switch failed (the month my warranty ended, but they sent me one) and now my first trigger stage (trigger 1) isn't responding. For a $450 device, I'm a bit disappointed. Suffice to say, my gun-runs in the A10 have gone to shit, since the GUN PAC doesn't function. Thrustmaster has offered to send me one for $50! I know it is coming from FRANCE but that's just silly. I am hoping one of you has opened it up and recognized the switch they used so that I can buy one for a few dollars off of digikey or something. Also, has anyone else had a trigger switch go bad, or any switches? It isn't like I knock the HOTAs around the room, I'm obsessively careful with my gear. Thanks for any help I can get!
  7. This is true, I apologize for the confusion. I understand Oculus's reasoning, but I lament that VR could be so much more without the legal crap holding it back. Especially with something as simple as standing. If one can't stand up with their eyes closed, they should be wearing a helmet for safety :)
  8. Actually, the device shuts off when you stand up. No, not really, I just figured you'd get the point I was making. You can say 'it is a seated experience' over and over (and Palmer does in his interviews) but that doesn't make it the case. It is a damn shame they can't embrace standing experiences (and factor them into the design) because people are so god damn sue-happy these days. I wish people would take responsibility for their actions instead of suing knife companies for making knives sharp.
  9. It's funny, the guys in Elite Dangerous have been exploring this too. The cockpits in that game are quite roomy, even in the fighters, so you can get out of your seat and walk around/look out the window into space. Sadly I can't try it because my setup has my rift camera rather close (mounted on a monitor maybe 3 feet away, whole setup is a Obutto cockpit so I can't move the chair back) But remember everyone, 'The Oculus rift is a seated experience.' Put it on a mug or something.
  10. Sorry to resurrect this, but I have a similar issue. My trigger 1 doesn't seem to be working anymore (first stage of the trigger). I noticed my gunruns in the A10 started to suck all of the sudden, but thought I was just rusty. Then I was playing with the TARGET software so I could use trigger 1 in Elite Dangerous and I noticed it isn't responding at all. In Windows game controller settings, it doesn't light up. I'm assuming stage one of the trigger should be button 1? Has anyone else had this particular issue? I'm guessing it is also pinched wires as discussed here, but I hope not. My warranty ran out while I was talking to TM about replacing my Master Light Switch (luckly they sent me a new switch for free since the warranty ended mid email-back-and-forth, but I'm way out of it now. I'm not too bad with taking things apart, but I'm not confident with it, so I'm hoping to avoid messing about inside the joystick base and potentially screwing something else up.
  11. I've noticed, even with today's SU27 update, that the control 'cannon' in the weapons menu only selects the cannon, it does not fire it. It is still fired using the weapons release. Is this a bug or a feature of the SU27? Does it not have a trigger for the cannon? I feel like a Viper pilot in the old school BSG when I've got to press the big red button with my thumb to fire guns. O_O
  12. I had been struggling with this issue for a while, and thought I'd post my solution. Problem: On some FC3 aircraft, the view is too zoomed in and the zoom slider doesn't work. Solution: The TIR's default bindings are wrong. TIR Z axis is bound to zoom view, where as it should be bound to view forward/backward (up with the rest of the TIR assignments on the Axis page)
  13. I absolutly love seeing people's set-ups, especially picture heavy threads of folks creating amazing cockpits out of gum and chicken wire. I decided to post about my cockpit in order to share some information about the rout I've taken (so far) and why. First, here is where I'm at right now: Out of sight are Saitek flight pedals (the metal versions). Displays: I'm running a VG248 24 inch 1920x1080 at 144hz flanked by two 22 inch LG Flattrons running at 60hz. Originally I planned to pick up two more VG248's, but not only does DCS play nice with the LG's slightly lower resolution, I find that I don't look directly at the side screens enough to warrant it. Additionally, I'm of the mind that screens will be so 2014 soon (more on that below). I have discovered that DCS does just fine running my high refresh rate screen with the lower ones, so for anyone who might be wary of mixing screen types, don't be. It might even mean you can spend less on your side screens and more on your middle one! The bottom screen is some old Westinghouse 19" from the dawn of HD. It is something like 1280x900, but it works great for my MFDs. If you're wondering, yes I have set up HELIOS before, but I find it is more trouble than it is worth. With TrackIR, I can just look back at my virtual instruments. Input: Clearly everyone knows about the Thrusmaster Warthog. For anyone who is on the fence because of how mindbogglingly expensive it is, I'll join in and say it is totally worth it. Consider the fact that you could spend $400 on a video card that will be out of date in a year or two, where as this thing, built like a rock, is going to be around for a while. And if you're finding DCS A-10 to be a bit overwhelming, this stick and throttle helps. I came from the X52, and trying to remember what modifier to hold to turn one of my hats into the DMS or TMS was just too much on top of everything else. With this stick, it is 1 to 1. I really like the TM MFDs too, though I could live without them. If you don't have a screen to go behind them, I don't think they're worth it until you've got nothing else to update. Obutto: I have the old model Obutto cockpit. It was way cheaper (even with the tripple monitor mounts!) but has one great flaw: You don't have enough foot space to fit your pedals in! I managed to get mine in there, but the fit is so tight that they lose about an inch of travel. This is a quick fix with a deadzone in DCS, but may be a deal breaker for some. Additionally, the seat goes a bit flat after a year or so. I'm not heavy by any means, but the padding went to shit recently (which is why I have an old-people cushion on there). The back of the chair is far from soft, but it is good enough so far. Obutto offers a special mount for the TM Hog. As you can see, I don't have it. Instead, I ordered the standard flight stick and throttle kit (Bought the Obutto before I had the TM Hog) and clamped the stick down using C-clamps. The throttle is screwed into an old sub I had sitting around, but it works great this way. Any wooden box would do, but this one is heavy enough that it doesn't move, and yet I can reposition the throttle easily. (Sadly, the sub is not functioning.) If you are only going to be playing DCS in your rig, buying the Obutto kit for your TM Hog might be a good idea, but since I play BF4, ARMA and the like on here too, I didn't want a huge chunk of metal jammed between my legs at all times. DK 2 and VR: I have both the DK1 and 2, and have used both extensively for DCS. It is because of the Oculus Rift that I've decided against building a full on switch-for-switch cockpit. I love the tactile response of using real switches, and if one of you guys with a sweet cockpit built happened to live in Iowa, I'd be at your door to try it, but I'm convinced that once the Rift hits the right resolution, it'll out date any cockpit I can build. Simply being able to look over your shoulder to admire your recent gun-run as you climb and turn is unbelivably satisfying. With that said, I fly with the setup you see here 90% of the time. Until the Rift is high res enough to allow me to read my HUD, I can't replace the screens. While I have my start-up flow good enough to get into the air in the Rift, reading my speed and delivering weapons is still not easy. And to those of you who have all the switches, buttons and knobs, I truly admire your work! If VR falls through, I may build a pit after all. Sorry for the length, and thanks for reading.
  14. Companies have been making big promises for all of time. The difference is, Oculus is real, and it is here right now. Every thread about OR has one of those guys bashing it and promoting something else (not saying that is exactly you, but close) and every time my response is the same. The best VR system in the world is the one that actually exists. When one of these other headsets manages to jump into my hands for $300, I'll sure as hell give it a second thought. Until then, it is vaporware.
  15. I have this issue only when using the DK2. I do not have the Sabre though. With TrackIR, any stutter was normally caused by IR light leak, so I only had to run my arm behind my head to block it, and it was back on track. With the DK2, it seems to be a deeper issue. I suspect software is to blame. And I'll bet it will go away once DCS World updates to use the new Oculus SDK.
  16. I've had this happen on the A-10 as well, though not very much. For me it happens somewhat randomly.
  17. I would argue (as a user of DK2 in DCS) that the 1:1 ratio for the DK2 has more benefits than downsides. Honestly, if turning your head to look around is a problem, please don't drive a car. Yes, it is tough to look directly behind me, but since my brain has been developing to associate muscle movement with the location of objects in the real world since I was 2, I find that I can mentally keep track of more targets, landmarks and locations when they correlate to a 1:1 position. Sure, when you're using TrackIR (which I also love) you still can keep track of things with muscle memory because they require the same ammount of input to move back to, the fact that the movement isnt 1:1 seems to diminish how intuitive it is to move to them. Tracking with TrackIR is also somewhat finicky, so turning 10 degrees to the right and up might not always put my POV back in the same spot. With DK2, it is shockingly rock solid. Personally, between a good triple monitor setup and TrackIR, or a CV1 of Oculus rift, I'd go with the rift if I wanted an edge. DK2 still suffers from being too low res to spot targets and effectively read instrumentation, but since Samsung just created a nice new 1440p screen that is the exact same size as the one in the DK2, I expect that won't be a problem much longer. Here is a video I put together showing the F-15 in the rift. No comments on my piloting skill please, I was focusing on DK2 :) ${1} (don't know how to make the imbed work) I'll happily take requests to check various things out if anyone is interested, though I only have FC and A10c at the moment. And on that subject, I'm able to do a complete startup in the DK2 with the A-10c despite the resolution, so it isn't THAT bad.
  18. It is probably a good thing zoom is disabled. Changing your FOV (same as zooming essentially) is very disorienting and uncomfortable. Additionally, it amplifies the imperfections in head tracking, which isn't so much an issue with TrackIR, but which is disastrous with the Rift. We'll just have to wait for CV1 and its 4k custom built screen (Speculation).
  19. I can only imagine how great VR is/will be for chopper pilots. I've been flying the F15 again, and after a run in with the enemy, I had to make an emergency landing. Landing in VR is a whole new level man. I had no HUD, and can't read my instruments due to the low resolution. I was able to estimate my speed and altitude visually, unlike ever before. It was a rough landing (I was missing my nose, so she tended to pull down when the wind hit) but I survived. In a chopper, I'll bet this added sense of speed and orientation will make landing and hovering totally new.
  20. I figured the sidways issue out thanks to Cymantic Bruce. Thanks though. I just got out of a quick mission with the A-10C. Video wouldn't do any good because you wouldn't be able to see how it actually looks. In fact video of the Rift can be somewhat misleading as it always looks cleaner than in the rift. The resolution is still too low to make out instruments, and it seems like the game isn't even drawing textures at the proper resolution. I found leaning in didn't help. The new screen door effect is much easier to deal with than the DK1, but it is still there. Things just look smoother. The added dimension of being able to move your head (not just rotate) is stellar. I was able to look over my shoulder and see an engine fire, and track ground targets much better. Even better, now the rift doesn't drift, so I'm always facing the correct direction. In the current setup I'm running, there are serious problems with after-image, especially in the cockpit. Sudden head movements are even worse than they were in DK1. I'm guessing this might be fixed once I get the Oculus Config Utility working properly. (I tried with and without V-sync, no change) The F15 cockpit didn't seem to be as bad, not sure why. Considering how little space your HUD makes up, even with the improved resolution, altitude and speed are unreadable, and targets are still a pile of red pixels on my hud. I was able to do a gun run on three APCs, with two kills, so there is that, but when I took a pass at a KA-50, I couldn't tell which way he was facing until I passed him. I'm a huge VR enthusiast and Oculus fan, but I've got to say if you are kicking yourself for not buying the DK2, don't be. It is very impressive, but it isn't something I'll be spending hours and hours in. It still needs double the pixels, and half the headaches. Another note: The camera is supposed to be 5 feet away for the best tracking. I've got 3 feet from my head to my center monitor (I have an Obutto cockpit) so my head tracking probably isn't the best. I hope CV1 has a wider angle lens, or an adjustable one, or those of us with a home cockpit are going to need to make some major changes to integrate this thing. I'll post again when I get thins further sorted.
  21. I've just received my DK2 and am having the same issue as a few hundred others: The setup software simply doesn't detect the rift. I am on the other hand, able to get it to turn on for DCS world. One problem though: The view is sideways and in one eye only. Can someone who has this working on DK2 post their monitorsetup LUA script? I can't seem to force DCS to play in 1920x1080, which probably isn't helping, and when I had it working on DK1, the DIP was so out of whack that I could feel my eyes converging. Once I get those things squared away, I'll be sure to post my impressions and comparisons to DK1 or using a tripplewide setup with TrackIR.
  22. With markers on, you probably won't be surprised if I tell you it is easy to spot things. Without them, its essentially impossible. There is a lot of down sampling going on, even when you turn off AA and such. Most engines won't render a polygon is smaller than a pixel, and with the rifts low res, most everything is smaller than a pixel almost all the time. But the very first time I hooked it all up and did a quick mission with the A-10, I was able to gun down a convoy of targets thanks to smoke markers and luck. The most compelling experience is simply flying around low over trees and buildings. It's also really cool looking all the way over your shoulder in order to see things. I'm so used to TrackIR that I was surprised how much I appreciate 1:1 movement! Also, once more, anyone know the recenter button or ipd settings location? Driving me crazy!
  23. I've finally registered to comment on this thread. I'm a lucky owner of a DK1 and soon to have a DK2, and I wanted to give some impressions and ask some questions for those who have also tried DCS in OR. First, is there a better way to adjust ipd and such? I'm messing with the eye_shift value in the monitor config lua files and I still feel like my eyes are converging. Second, what is the hotkey to re-center the view, if any? My experience so far has been great! Sure I can't re-center my view, and sure my eyes hurt due to the ipd being wrong, but with an OR, TM Hog HOTAS and great headphones, the experience is quite impressive. Not being able to translate my head position is not as big of a problem as I would have expected. It sucks I can't lean in to look at my instruments, but I think I'll live until the DK2 shows up. Also, DCS does something no other rift game has for me so far, and I wish all others would. When I enable the rift, I can run DCS on my main screen(s), but when I jump in game, it automatically displays on my rift, instead of forcing me to drag the game window over to it or make the rift my main monitor. This is a big deal for gamers like us who often have triple monitor setups. I'm off to try the F-15 in the rift!
