    Hi evanswillo,

Have you tried the Canted Rendering option on at all?  I thought if I turned it on it might give me a wider FOV, but I found no difference at all in the visuals.

I did notice that the resolution number displayed in the the VR1 tool dropped though and I got a lower overall resolution in SteamVR when I turned Canted Rendering on.

    Happy landings,

Further to last, Canted Rendering gives be a much better sweet spot and is a plus for me.  Mileage may vary for others, but it I always fly with Canted Rendering on now for much better visuals.

I did not immediately notice the improvement when I first tried it because I was so focused on checking the edges of my vision expecting a wider FOV.

Thank you for sharing your experience Talisman. The bugs will get squashed out eventually surely.

Loving the great VR visuals flying mostly low level in the Huey and some Chinook.  Also racing the free Mustang TF-51D and the Phantom is great fun in VR. :joystick:

Hello @Talisman_VR . How's it going so far? You liking it still?

    Hi Amazonia,

Going well, but I am still very much exploring.  I intend to give OpenXR more of a go soon. I don't feel able to give a hearty overall recommendation yet, but the visuals are great!

    Hi Folks,

SimShaker has been working well for me for years (currently beta 2.9.2.0), but just lately, every now and then, it has been stopping mid flight with the following message:

    Screenshot 2025-07-19 190313.png

If I click OK then it usually starts running again.  :dunno:   Any idea what might be causing the shut down?

    Thanks.

Not been using DCS and SimShaker for a while, but now back warbird racing using version 2.9.4.0 with the TF-51D and still getting this same problem when I fly the Mustang.  ShimShaker cuts out mid flight after working for 20 minutes or so and I get the above "index was out of range" message.

    Any ideas F4I0?

    I am using a standard HF8

I see that granola1861 (above) has been having the same problem and also posted on Discord.

A solution would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in anticipation.

I'm having this same issue.  Seems to only be with warbirds for me.  Would sure like some help and resolution to this one....

I have updated to beta version 2.9.4.0 but have not had a chance to use and test it much yet.  Have you had any problems with 2.9.4.0 at all?

Come to think of it, yes, If I remember correctly I was warbird flying the last time it stopped on me.  I will make a note next time.

Big than you TimberWolf 🤩  Problem solved!!  I had disabled the launcher in settings thinking I did not need it.  Now I see why I need the launcher after all, lol.  Many thanks for taking the time to respond to this thread, I am very grateful to you.

Thank you also to everybody else that that chipped in to help me along the way.  🙂

Many thanks.  I disabled the launcher, so maybe if I enable it again I will get this option before Steam VR starts up. 🤞 Will let you know if this works.

Or you can bypass the whole launcher thing and create a couple of desktop shortcuts to DCS.exe for starting in pancake or VR...

For pancake add --force_disable_VR to the end of the shortcut

    for VR add --force_enable_VR

Thanks.  Could be last resort.  Probably sounds daft, but I am not sure I have the understanding or confidence to try this though.

  9. I tried to get help with this too, but despite hints and tips I could not get it to work.  I gave up in the end. :dunno: Shame, as I thought it would be a great feature.

Hows this been working out for you? Is the VR1 going to be something you can use or did it end up being a poor buying decision for you?

    Hi Gun Jam,

Looking very good for me I am glad to say.  I am a happy camper.  Still taking baby steps, but getting better.  Had a go with OpenXR, but not activated eye tracking yet and decided to stick with SteamVR for a bit.

Visuals are very good.  I have SteamVR resolution per eye set to 100% at the moment, giving me 4752 x 3796 @ 90 Hz and up to 90 fps on some maps, but some maps less.

A fresh installation of DCS with a new PC means a lot of catching up and I am still yet to bind all keys for all of my aircraft modules and am still tinkering around with graphic settings, etc.

I had a Pimax before and I noticed that I needed to set a lower IPD in DCS VR settings than before, in order for the cockpits not to look too big in scale.

Now I am wearing the head strap lower at the back of the head and the headset higher on the head at the front, I have less of an issue with the mechanical IPD knob slipping on the VR1.

Wont be long now and I will be back flying with my squad mates in MP.  😀  :joystick:

  12. Hi Qcumber,

    I am using a Somnium VR1.

With my old PC it took so long to open DCS, that I had time to turn off Steam VR when it popped up after I clicked the DCS desktop icon, allowing DCS time to load in flat screen mode, no problems.

However, with my new faster PC, DCS starts to load so quick now that no matter how quick I am to shut down Steam VR when it pops up, I can't win and it messes up DCS as it is loading because I have just turned off Steam VR, lol.

Result is that I am having to uninstall Steam each time I want to work on DCS in flat screen mode, otherwise I can't get DCS to launch as I want it.  LOL :crash: :dunno:

    Happy landings,

    Talisman

P.S.  This is a problem even though I have my VR headset turned off, completely disconnected, unplugged and my lighthouse also unplugged/disconnected.

  13. Hi Folks,

Just got a new PC and am fresh downloading everything from scratch.  Searched the internet, but can't find a definitive solution to stop Steam VR from launching when I want to run DCS without VR.  This did not happen with my old rig, but something seems to have changed.

This is driving me crazy, lol.  What I am missing?

Any hints/tips would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Happy landings,

  14. Thanks.  Yes, I have been having issues with openXR runtime; no joy with tracking properly.  I had more luck with SteamVR and actually managed to get some flying in, so will return to Steam for now.  Thanks for the resolution tip.

No need for any other Somnium software, just the VR1 Software itself, just ensure before you launch DCS, everything in the VR1 tool is setup as you wish.

Have you installed the Beta 4 software and updated the firmware. ?

Suggest you take some baby steps first to get used to things.

    Ensure openXR runtime is selected.

You have the Visionary Edition so you do have ET that will allow you to use QuadViews and either FFR or DFR.

The VR1 Resolution slider needs to be adjusted if you are going to take full advantage of ET.

First try without ET and just set resolution slider to around 60% and see what framerate you are getting, need to try and match the freq of the headset so you're really looking to reach a stable 90 fps.

Its important to dial setting down first and then slowly make an incremental step forward.

If you have enabled QV in DCS you will need to alter the main resolution down to as low as 20% as you are probably running FFR set the Foveated settings 80 20 20 to start.

Then try Eye Calibration to get DFR.

There are a lot of things to adjust and understand to get the VR1 running at its best but that is the price we pay for such a cutting edge piece of hardware and something we all knew, but as the software has been enhanced the better the experience has become, you are joining us at a great time for DCS and VR, exciting times ahead.

Yes, definitely baby steps for me, lol. 🚼 I can't pretend to understand all of what you have said above yet, but I am working on it and doing lots of research. :detective: It is kind of you to take the time to help steer me in the right direction.  Thank you again.

I don't think I am ready for the Beta version yet, so will hold fire for now.  Especially as it looks like a release version update is on the cards.

    Onwards and upwards.

SteamVR does not need to be launched or running when using openXR in DCS.

Just ensure you have  openXR runtime enabled  and SteamVR disabled.

The Beta is really to only option if you wish to run openXR.

Goto Discord Somnium - Announcement to gain access to Beta 4 download, and updated firmware if you are interested in 72hz and 120hz alongside 90hz

Beta is currently due to complete by end of July.

Brilliant.  Thanks a lot.  Much appreciated.

P.S.  What about Somnium Space Launcher?  Is this needed in addition to the VR1 Tool?  What are the advantages of the launcher?

  17. Ok, finally got it!

I was so focused on running in VR that I did not think to make adjustments with VR turned off!

So, as a VR only user, the procedure that worked for me to create/populate a saved games, DCS, config, view, SnapViews.lua file was as follows:

Launch DCS World in flat screen mode, VR not running.

Select an aircraft and spawn in on the ground.  In my case the TF-51D.

Go to the cockpit view settings for the selected aircraft.  Note the move camera keys and the save cockpit angles key.

Go back into cockpit view for the selected aircraft and use the move camera keys to alter the pilot/seat position.  Then save new position using the save cockpit angles key.

Close DCS World and open and check the users, name, saved games, DCS, config, view, SnapViews.lua file.

The file should now appear and be populated with DCS aircraft type details all listed in type alphabetical order.

As a VR only user of DCS I had not realise that the SnapViews.lua file could only be created/populated by actions in non-VR mode.

Although I had used the SnapViews.lua file on my previously installed version of DCS World with VR, I had also previously used it in flat screen mode with TrackIR prior to moving over to VR; so I had taken it for granted that the file would be there no matter what.

Thanks to everyone who helped me work through this.

Like I wrote. The file will NOT be populated by modules until you save a snapview for each module. To quickly do this, just enter a module, press NumEnter and Num5 to center and reset zoom, then press RAlt+Num0 to save.

Thank you MAXsenna.  Strange, I have had DCS for many years and have never known or used this method.  Is this for when running VR or with it turned off?  I have customised my centre VR key to my joystick and used that all the time.  What do you mean by NumEnter?

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

assuming snapviews in your saved games directory, delete it and it will be recreated, repair doesn't touch saved games AFAIK

Thank you speed-of-heat.  Yes, snapviews folder is there but has very little in it; A10 (only aircraft listed with section [14] default VR data) and a few Migs without any section [14] default VR data, but none of the aircraft I have and fly are listed.

Tried both DCS World repair options, but no joy.

I will try your suggestion and delete the file hoping it will recreate.  🤞 Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

  21. Good to read the posts above.

Image is nice and clear in DCS, but the FOV seems a little smaller than I had expected.  I am finding that the mechanical IPD keeps moving and slipping to a bigger setting whilst in use.  Anyone else finding that?  My IPD is 58, so I set the lowest I can get, 60, but then the IPD mechanism continually shifts with head movement!

Trying to understand a few things.  Like, is it possible to use my lighthouse tracker with Open XR without running Steam VR?  Or is Steam VR always needed to be running for the lighthouse to work in association with Open XR?  It would be nice to dispense with Steam VR completely if possible.

Steam VR seems to cause problems with my DCS.  I keep having to uninstall Steam and Steam VR in order to access DCS without Steam trying launch it in VR mode, even when I have logged out of Steam.  Very time consuming and frustrating.

Also, I just inadvertently found on the interned that there is something called a Somnium Space Launcher.  Is this needed in addition to the VR1 Tool?  What are the advantages of the launcher?

Finally, I did not know that there was a beta version of the VR1 Tool, I just downloaded a version as per the standard instructional video.  How do you access a beta version?

    Thanks.

  22. I have just purchased a new PC and downloaded a fresh installation of DCS World.  Very disappointingly, I find that I can no longer adjust my default VR view to customize the pilot head position correctly for each aircraft type, as I used to do in the SnapViews.lua file of my previously installed, same version, of DCS World.

For example, I can no longer find the SnapViews.lua file VR view data to adjust my default VR pilot head position correctly in the TF-51D or any other aircraft that I own.

Please see the attached image showing a short list of some of the default view VR settings that I had customised in my previous copy of DCS World.

Any guidance on how I can set my custom default VR view for each aircraft so that my pilot head position is set to the correct position each time I spawn into an aircraft (and each time I press the 'Recentre VR Headset button in the UI layer') would be greatly appreciated.

I used to have all this sussed out, but it seems things have changed.  Have I been doing it all wrong or is there a better procedure to achieve customised default VR view pilot head position that I am not aware of?

Currently I find that the default VR pilot head position is typically much too far to the rear on spawn in and when the recentre VR headset button is used.  Some aircraft are worse than others.  I have user snap-view saving checked on.

Thank you in anticipation, if you are able to help me with this issue.
