  1. I´d say it´s not cheap, but it´s not "overprized" given the time spent creating the map.

Well, and considering the years spent on 1.5-2.0 updates the prices should go over the roof.

    That's no argument.

The fact however is that maps are at best an addition, you can buy the map but can do nothing with it. It's just a map. On the other hand modules are a playable content. Paying same money for a map and for a MiG-15 or 21 constitutes for me the term "overprized".

Anyway, that idea of selling a small "package" with new module, map, ai and missions sounds very attractive.

  2. F4U-4 wasn't really that bird flying there at the end of the war, on board of USS Bennington (VMF-123), Essex (VBF-83), Interpid (VBF-10) or some others you'd find F4U-1D or FG-1D. And thats when we are talking about operations over Okinawa and Japan in 1945.

So considering the Iwo-Jima and Okinawa maps in future the choice is very proper. I'd rather be afraid of the opposition, future Leatherneck modules should bring some high performance Japanese fighters like George or Frank, Ki-100 would be interesting as well.

The only thing I'm really afraid of is the cockpit, the rear view in Corsair (based on Il-2 experiences, so not best source) was terrible. Big plate right behind back, extending over the top of the pilots head obscured that extremely. Unless someone tells you that you got bandit on your tail, you might not even notice that.

  3. Being honest everything on the Pacific is just bigger, making a proper Burma map would require area even bigger than Georgia map.

I'm more interested in Okinawa map to be honest, a map covering whole Okinawa Islands would be insufficient itself to create a decent area of operations and bases. However extending it to the Kyushu (with some major cities) would grant an opportunity to play a lot more scenarios from whole Okinawa campaign up to the American raids from Ie Shima on southern Kyushu. The area would be roughly equal to Black Sea map, but large part of it would be sea.

Okinawa also grants a massive opportunity for join operations of Japanese Army and Navy as well as US Navy and Army.

  4. :DI fall asleep now if it's after 11PM and I've had a 3 finger glass of Bourbon :D

Have a good one than ^^

Here is an interview with Japanese Ace, Mr Honda Minoru. In 5:55 he speaks of his experiences from the battle :

I dont think anybody would even have time or energy to spend about 8 hours running 1 mission :(

  5. Ha, we had that discussion many months ago in some other subforum. The distances from Rabaul or even Buin to Guadalcanal were too great for anyone to actually play a full scale mission. In reality pilots sometimes lost consciousness or fell asleep after multiple hours in the air.

Much more reasonable would be New Guinea with Lae, Buna and Port Moresby or 1943-1944 Burma :)

  6. Sure, there were a lot of planes involved, i 'm not arguing. I 'm just saying that the most iconic historical scenarios (plus other early war battles) only require 4-5 planes : Midway and Coral sea.

As for bombers, yes, there can be no theater without them. PTO here again is much easier then ETO : SBD and D3As should be much, much easier to model than any twin engine bomber.

I hope that one very very nice day I'd get B5N with radar :pilotfly:

  7. Well, I hope that LN have made the decision to go all the way with creating a dedicated PTO theater. It's much less resource intensive than ETO and the planeset required to recreate historical scenarios is not extensive.

Early war battles only need 4-5 aircraft to become a reality : F4F, SBD, A6M2 and D3A - B5N. With these aircraft you can do Midway, Coral Sea, Aleutians, Solomons, etc. If you add an F6F and A6M5 or Ki-43 you can recreate most late war battles.

    Good times ahead.

Actually no, its a lot more than this. For an early war that would be also Tojo I (Ki-44-I), Oscar I (Ki-43-I), Nate (Ki-27b) and of course bombers. For a mid war you'd need Oscar II (Ki-43-II), Tony (Ki-61), Tojo II (Ki-44-II), Nick (Ki-45), Sonia (Ki-51), Jill (B6N), Judy (D4Y) and for the late war you'd have to add even more - Frank, Jack, George, Grace ...

But its a nice thing that you mentioned machines like SBD or B5N, it would really be cool if we would see in future not only fighters but also some ground attackers, torpedo planes or dive bombers as a modules :)

  8. Yeah, well, its passive a bit.

I'd hope more for like a June/July 1944 combat, having some Japanese Navy aircraft available as well. It was actually over Iwo Jima, where Saburo Sakai ended up fighting alone against 15 Hellcats, in a dogfight that lasted some 20 minutes, Sakai wasn’t hit by a single enemy round, despite thousands of rounds being shot at him and his craft being vastly inferior to those he was up against at this point in the war.

  9. Viggen like Viggen, I dont have any interest in it.

But where exactly Leatherneck wants to take us with Iwo Jima, Okinawa and so on ? I mean ED struggles with Normandy stuff, they still did not provide even decent damage models for ww2 modules, map is still a matter of gossips rather than facts and the rate at which new aircraft are released is lower than low.

And LS would try to go all alone on the new theater, with aircraft (both pilot and ai controlled) and maps ... I really want to know how they will work that out. They have all my support, but still they are going into a very dangerous area :)

  10. Well, its a shame that such a great things got leaked. I guess if you wait too long thats what happens ...

But anyway, its quite obvious that if F4U is coming than next thing will be A6M in that department. Though Iwo Jima does not fit into that, the major encounters over Iwo happened in June/July 1944 when almost all A6M5s from Yokosuka Kokutai were wiped out by Hellcats from TF 58. No Corsairs were involved there. And after early July rest of Japanese pilots were evacuated leaving no opposition for further US raids. So if any Corsairs were flying there, they had no enemies to fight there, only could drop ordnance.

On a sidenote, I know that briefly there was stationed an Army unit consisting Oscars but that was only temporarily ...

But it doesnt really matter, most important is which model of F4U-1 we get and with what settings/performance and which model of a Zero it would be to fight it.

Also in regard to Ai, if that is an Iwo Jima and in future Okinawa than I'd expect some Ai J2M, Ki-43 and Ki-84 and who knows what for US.

For now I only know where my money will go soon ^^

  11. Basically I'm not the only person who is going to use the same DCS 1.5 Open Beta, as there is my brother with his own account and modules. So I tried to run the stuff, managed to log in on my account and loaded all of my modules. Everything seemed to be working in perfect order.

Than he tried to do so, managed to log on his account and loaded his own modules. Again, everything worked fine.

But any time now I try to switch back to my account game crashes and I receive a message "Program DCS stopped working ..."

I can reproduce it every time, as no matter what I tried I could not log on my own account and game crashed.

I assume this is because we do not share the same modules, however this seems to be silly if one launcher cannot serve for more accounts. Switching should be possible, only he should not be able to use my modules in multiplayer while I should not be able to use his. Simple as that.

Or is there other possible explanation to this issue ?

Here is how it looks :

  12. Here is the same banner with contrast added (from Zakatak's post):

There is a rising sun and the left side really looks like the cockpit of an F4U. That said, Cobra stated that the September (we hope!) announcement will be for a module that is part of a larger project. I have a feeling that the larger project will be DCS: WWII PTO based on prior hints and this banner. But the LNS module announced will be the F4U-1 or F4U-1A based on Vella Lavella with VMF-214. LNS stated that their next module is closely tied to their name (Leatherneck is a reference to USMC aviators), Cobra's current profile shot is a Black Sheep, the cockpit shot looks like an F4U, Rudel has referenced the Black Sheep a few times in older posts, and there was a F4U pic briefly posted on the DCS A10C facebook page on the last day of August (since taken down...which is highly suspect :)). All of this taken together points to a F4U for the September aircraft, BUT - I think that either LNS or another developer (ED/Belsimtek/etc) will also develop further modules for ~1943-early 1944 PTO theater aircraft to complement the F4U and South Pacific map. The likely candidates are the A6M3 (awesome!), P-40F (VEAO is set to release it soon), P-38, F6F, etc.

In short, I think will get a Zero - not necessarily as the next announced aircraft (though certainly possible even with these other hints), but sometime in the near term.

    My 2 cents,

    Nick

I hope it will be a birdcage model, it's so often omitted in sims yet it was the actual F4U VFM-214 started flying.

  13. I keep seeing these kinds of posts, but does anybody seriously wants to reenact that? You can use some of the current WWII modules and see just how fun would that be.

I think it merely a joke. There would be little fun in such thing. On the other hand knowing that VEAO goes with F4F and P-40 having Zeke or Oscar and Tony would be a fun to play.
