  1. Not really, because to create a program for an accurate flight sim requires a huge amount of research just to gather enough flight data to recreate the flight characteristics accurately. There's also the research needed to get the airframe, armament and equipment accurate. Sound? If that isn't right, the developers get to hear about that. Finally, comes the task of developing the program itself.

Flight data are more like a confirmation of proper establishment of airframe, airfoil, engine performance, weight and center of gravity. Also more flight data does not mean better, as each test was done in different conditions. Not only region, but weather, temperatures, humidity - all that can matter.

Anyway, I have all that data. Or large part of them.

Sound is not a problem, engine (original Sakae) is in Planes of Fame museum. Type 97 machine guns are modified Vickers machine guns which even run same ammunition. Type 99 is Japanese version of 20 mm Oerlikon, one can base on sounds of MG FF for instance.

Developing a computer program for well known aircraft that have the required data available (eg: P-51D, Bf 109K-4) is hard enough; developing a flight sim for an aircraft which might not have as much available information (eg: Ki-61, Ki-84, He 162) would be far more time consuming and expensive - if enough information can be found to develop an accurate flight sim in the first place.

Ki-61 is bad example. Engine is licensed DB 601, all 109 fans know it :)

    About Ki-84 its true.

  2. Pacific.

Pacific, Pacific, Pacific. On and on and on and on and.....

Doesn't anyone remember Ilya's game, where we fly over a seemingly endless ocean, but with perfect navigational skill, manage to find the target, only to be shot down by AAA before bomb release??

Pacific is boring. Endless water. Ocean and then more Ocean, on and on and on. Then flak.

If I may answer, I remember that Ilya game and that a lot of things were simplified so you had ability to navigate perfectly. And guess what, I have been shot down quite a few times but cant complain, its a part of a risk of playing dive bomber or torpedo plane and not only fighter as most wants to.

But the moment that torpedo reaches the target and you see the splash of water mixed with fire and smoke ... thats why I love doing this.

Pacific is boring if someone imagines only water as he knows only Pearl Harbor, Midway, Truk, Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal.

But large part of campaigns was over a big lands or islands, just to bring mentioned a few times New Guinea or not mentioned Burma. There was also war over China at the same time. And Philippines saw a lot of action too.

For me Pacific is more like a golden beach with jungle behind it, sunny weather and Zeros fighting Warhawks over that.

No-one seems to want to mention the P-38....... Oh. I aplogise. It's not a single engined fighter.

    Silly me.

P-38 has some legend. Certainly it was a great fighter but it might be exaggerated who flew this warbird and only this warbird. Others had mixed opinions.

If I may quote some source, the Report from Joint Fighter Conference in NAS Patuxent River which occurred between 16-23 October 1944.

The purpose was to gather about 400 Allied combat pilots and contractors, engineers and ground crew members. They had a "fly off" of every major US aircraft at the time. The British delegation brought a Seafire III and a Mosquito. The evaluators even had a Zeke 52 to use for comparison.

This will be a longer quote so I am going to put it into a spoiler, so not everyone will have to go through it, but only those who wish.

    From the following machines : FM-2, F6F-5, F7F-1, F8F-1, F4U-1C and F4U-1D, XF4U-4, FG-1A, P-47D, P-47M, P-51D, P-61, P-63, Seafire, Mosquito, A6M5 model 52 and our P-38L which I picked to leave a details they commented.

To quote Lieutenant Colonel Toubman representing Army Air Force and discussing Lockheed fighter :

"They have a J and L-5 model P-38 airplane available for the conference. I just looked at it this morning and the J-25 has dive flaps and L-5 also has that. The Allison 1710 engine is in there and they are not fitted up with water injection as yet.

We have manifold pressure regulation on both the J-25 and L-5 and that is Minneapolis Honeywell control system. One point to notice on that boost aileron is that you will not turn your boost ailerons on or off in flight, we had a little trouble with P-38 hydraulic system so, if you contemplate using the boost ailerons, turn them on the ground and leave them on in flight.

The dive flaps control is right on the wheel and its quite a novel sensation which is like compressibility. You can overpower it very easily by pushing forward and you can practically come down in a saw tooth dive. I have not tried the 47 dive flaps, but the 38's are quite a novelty. On the turbo control you have Minneapolis Honeywell system. You can not overspeed the turbos and there will be no turbo indicator in the cockpit; I think it has worked out fairly nice in the P-38 and a note might be taken of this for turbo installation of some of the planes contemplated. "

Now to come to review section it is in a form of table so I have to rewrite some sections.

P-38L was reviewed by 1 Army pilot, 5 British, 9 Navy pilots and 13 Contractors. They had cards on which they left notes/remarks and marks about aircraft.

    Remarks:

1 pilot - Bad visibility to sides and down. Would rather have F4U or F6F for Pacific. 1 pilot - I would not consider this a modern fighting aircraft. Poor coordination of control forces and effectiveness combined with very weak directional stability make it a poor gun platform and its maneuverability rating is so low as to preclude its use in modern combat. 1 pilot - As a fighter-bomber good, for fighter sweep - just fair, as escort - poor.

1 pilot - Good due to twin engine reliability, altitude performance, good accelerated stall, versatility, diver recovery flaps which make prolonged zero-lift dives possible.

1 pilot - Apart from very queer ailerons, the aircraft is quite pleasant to fly and would probably make a very good strike fighter. There is however objectionable wobble in bumpy air.

1 pilot - View is poor, too many struts in the way. rudder makes aircraft very hard to maneuver on first flight.

1 pilot - Too complicated and full of gadgets, would make unserviceability rate very high.

1 pilot - Query on maintenance and operational problems with liquid cooled engines in hot climates.

1 pilot - Too much mechanical equipment for one man to operate in combat.

The other not always mentioned issue is sheer number of things you had to do if you got bounced by enemy fighters.

You had to come up on the rpm for both engines, go to auto rich mixture for both engines, increase the throttle setting to combat, set the rpm and mixture for what you were doing, turn on the gunsight, drop tanks if you had them, and then fight. Many P-38's were shot down while the pilot was reconfiguring for combat and not reacting to being bounced.

P-38 was a nice plane to fly but seems to be over-complicated and had certain flaws. And was expensive.

But surely is one of the symbols of Pacific :)

  3. I hope Ed sticks to late war. There are other sims who cover the mid-war very good, rumours say that med is coming next there. I hope for Either a northern germany/benelux map with the inclusion of flyable mosquito, typhoon, tempest, Ta152, 190A8, Me410 and AI Lanny, or a northeastern germany map with the inclusion of Yak3, La7, Tu2+the germans from before. Best of course would be a map which Covers the whole area, and all 3 plane Setups :)

Also hoping for Pacific, but I think thats a loong way to go till we see it in any new sim:(

I think some of your mentioned planes are already on someones roadmap ^^

  4. In Europe most interesting from my perspective is 1939 - 1940, so Poland, France, Italy, Belgium and Holland and those few British units which came to defend French sky. That is actually a nice period as French not only use all their various machines MS 406, D.520, Bloch MB 152, Arsenal VG 33 but also Curtiss H-75. Very different from American ones in multiple ares.

But that was kinda offtopic in regard to the OP.

As pointed previously I am mostly interested in Pacific.

  5.

For example, someone mentioned the Zero's in the states, although we have contacts over there and some good friends we live in the UK, over 3000 miles away. Where as Duxford or Northweald I can get to in an hours drive...

    Pman

Hey, nobody is blaming you. You are doing a great job. And besides, I was in the Duxford this year for the air show. Pretty amazing stuff.

I don't think anyone should blame VEAO if they don't want to or can't make certain planes that they don't think is possible for them to complete. I just think that all the developers should look closely at what they plan to make and what purpose will the aircraft have in a combat simulator. If someone makes a early model Zero or whatever to pair with the P40 or Wildcat or something I'd buy both of them.

Its a role of community to show the developers what can be a potential money maker and what simply interests people.

If Pacific will gain enough support someone will pick it and work on it. Its partially a matter of showing any party that they can gain, not loose on the project :)

  6. I repeat again, the possibility of getting George or Frank is lower than any Zero or Tony. the main issue is engine, Homare. Which differed widely even in similar models. There was Homare 11, Japanese Army developed Ha-45-12 (Homare 12), than both branches went for better performing Homare 21 (Ha-45-21) but even this model had a "submodels". Some 21s had extended radiator fins for better cooling performance and were clear to run at higher boost and rpm, some while having higher compression ratio had same cooling area as Homare 11 and could not be running any higher.

All this comes from single problem that Japanese tried to build very powerful engine with limited (almost compact size) with low fuel consuption. Due to worse and worse resources situation it could not be produced with sufficient quality, but when run and maintained properly it was a brilliant design.

One way or another, it would be complicated to work on those planes.

As VAEO is working or will be working on Grumman Wildcat and also P-40F is right on the horizon best way is to go for something like Zero(but thats where community would have to convince some developers).

  7. Its our aim to make aircraft simulations to the highest possible level.

    Pman

That is kind of attitude I like :) I'm keeping an eye on that P-40F every day, cant wait to see (or fly it) Pman :pilotfly:

But as I said, making a Zero is not really a problem.

There are available reprinted original maintnance manuals for A6M2-A6M7 for the price of about 130$ (whole book, I know as I got them). They were used in the process of restoring Planes of Fame A6M5 and Blayd A6M2.

If one would spend some time there are NACA reports about A6M2 flight characterisitcs, mainly stability, effectivness of elevator, ailerons and rudder. Also stall characteristics.

This I also have, it should not be hard to get them. I think Smithsonian National Air and Space museum has them.

    And plenty of other sources.

Not to mention about couple of flyable machines along with whole documentation gathered in process of restoring them.

  8. To keep with the late war fighters, the George and/or Frank would fit in nicely (would prefer the George if just one is modeled).

If only they would be possible to model. For the moment amount of data is limited and some are conflicting for warbirds like Frank or George.

Focusing on 1942 and 1943 is much safer as amount of original data is quite decent and a lot are supported by American documents.

  9. No one is developing a Zero right now ( Ed or 3rd party)

The P40F is being done....F4 Wildcat is planed to late of 2015

F8F bearcat is planed to be done but its not fly at WW2. the war was over when they come to production.

    Is someone doing a Zero?

    It will be amazing!

No, nobody is. But that was speculation, I mean there is P-40F coming so was thinking what would be easiest and cheapest to build for some company.

  10. Just saying, don't go saying "only area" when there are possibilities that there are others.

    Flare

I think you misunderstood, I was referring to the Pacific. Not whole world war two. I am aware that there are areas like Mediterranean sea, personally I would enjoy flying Italian bombers and dropping torpedoes.

But once again, I was just trying to make a point in regard to the Pacific.

I hope that south pacific theater operation come to DCSW, but it is sad to say that if it will be done.....it will take a long time, because the planes (we need alot of USA and Japanese planes). New planes take many time to be completed. The map, units and others stuffs to make the scenary should be take less time, but only will be done after the planes.

For the begining just P-40F and Zero would be fine :)

  11. Guadalcanal its what i thinking....New guine its ok....but its more boring than a beutifull map with many islands and many naval combat.

I dont like to sound like being completely focused on New Guinea but it seems to be the most possible map to do with decent effort.

Now to answer. Its not true what you say.

What is more, what you say proves how little people know about New Guinea campaign.

This is the only area in which combat lasted for almost 3 years without any break, starting from 10th March 1942 when Yorktown and Lexington launched their TBD Devastators, SBD Dauntless and Wildcats to fly over Owen Stanley range and hit established newly Japanese Navy base at Lea.

to the east occured the major naval battle prior to Midway, the battle of Coral Sea.

It's the only area in which you can enjoy such variety of machines being used by both sides, just to name warbirds like Ki-43 Oscar, Ki-61 Tony, Ki-45 Nick, J1N Gekko, all kinds of Zeros, Boomerangs, P-38Fs, Wildcats, P-39s and P-400s, P-40s, P-47s (first P-47Ds were deployed in New Guinea).

The missions flew from Rabaul to strike targets over northern Australia (Townsville) had to cross this area.

New Guinea is not boring by any mean. From my perspective it is even more interesting than Solomon Campaign as it involves wider variety of aircraft flying in more balanced conditions, as it was true attrition campaign.

  12. Based on my observations its more a matter of finding a relatively good area which will not involve unimaginable amount of work, time and money. I mean the case is that we have P-40F coming, sooner or later. So to have some first PTO battles its a matter of making a map and making a Japanese fighter, in this case easiest seems to be A6M.

I know we are speculating but if one would think of trying to involve some development team, to build a Zero ... I think they would be highly interested how much resources that would involve.

  13. I'm only thinking of the range and situation of the F4U-1, Beaufighter Mk XXI and B-25. I'd like to see this more than any other area of operations for a WWII specific DCS map. Hopefully EDGE will make the entire map MiloMorai posted achievable.

    In case of asked planes.

First F4U-1 used on Pacific was the so called "birdcage" variant.

Slightly lower performance than F4U-1a and some other differences :

The maximum range of F4U-1 based on F4U Corsair Series Pilots manual was around 1100 miles.

That Beaufighter you mention was quite a late variant. 456th RAAF Squadron used back in December 1942 Beaufighter MK VI. In large numbers since late 1943 and in 1944 was in use Beaufighter TF Mk X.

Based on the Pilots Notes it had range of about 1700+ miles.

First operated B-25 on Pacific were C and D model. Range was about 2750 miles without any external load items.

You have to admire the fighter pilots, especially, who flew such distances day after day, in unpredictable weather, with nothing but sea or jungle to crash into, or bail-out over, if shot down or something went wrong. Saburō Sakai's flight back to Rabaul while injured after an encounter with an SBD - epic.

For gameplay, I wonder whether it would be possible to have the option to 'telescope' time to, say 20 minutes?

Well, this had to be absolutely exhausting for those Japanese pilots. No wonder they suffered such losses in that campaign with conditions they had to fight.

I dont think that would be possible, you could reduce the size of the "world" by half as I recall in one game I played about 10 years ago, which offered and 1 hour flights to Germany in a B-17. But dont see other way.

And that is why I through of New Guinea, as a picture presented on a previous page:

    oTpOiE.jpg

Besides, into New Guinea you can actually put all Allied forces - RAAF, RNZAF, US and I think even Dutch pilots were there.

  14. I dont think most of the people realize the distances in Solomon Islands Campaign. Between Rabaul and Henderson is over 650 miles in a straight line.

I havent seen anyone flying with P-51D a long distances flights in DCS and I doubt anyone would be capable of flying in front of his PC for 4 hours to Henderson (or from Henderson to Rabaul), take part in combat and than return with same long flight.

Even if one would take-off or refuel on Bougainville that is still 400 miles in one way.

That is why New Guinea is way more reasonable in terms of gameplay. From Lae to Port Moresby its 180 miles in straight line, to Milne Bay 330 (so still quite a lot), from Wewak to Port Moresby 450 miles which is the longest range from one base to another in that region.

New Guinea seems to be a very reasonable area to fly and based on my own knowledge it involves far more types of aircraft operated there.

  15. Considering incoming P-40F the choice of New Guinea as such map would be rahter obvious. It is lately a bit forgotten theater of war and lacks some recognition as for 3 years of fierce combat it was area of true attrition war.

The map could cover something like this area :

    oTpOiE.jpg

To the west there could be added main Japanese Army complex at Wewak. With that a main region of 1942 and 1943 combat covered its really easy to bring here anything you wish.

The natural competitor would be A6M2b model 21 or A6M3 model 32, and as most see, we have FW-190D and P-51D which fight in rather limited environment (from historical point of view) yet they give joy to so many players.

With 2 planes, from which one is already covered (P-40F) choosing and making the A6M model would really not be that hard. There is certain amount of Zeros flying and some like the Chino Planes of Fame museum run even on original engine. I mean all is at hand and requiers just some money.

Someone asked if there was any Sim game similar to DCS focusing on PTO, and mentioned Il-2 as it tried to be one.

Certainly it tried, but without and good will and desire to become. Developers were reluctant to seek Japanese sources, which truly in last 15 years became easy to get.

Making a Zero-sen to compete with P-40F is not a problem and in my opinion would give many people a lot of fun.

Ps. As its my first post on forums I would like to say hello to all :pilotfly:
