The Interesting Missions Generator
emolina replied to emolina's topic in User Created Missions General
Thanks JLX. The waypoint thing is interesting. I like to fly the missions the same way as you so I see where you are coming from. When I first started adding the comments I wanted them to help you find the landing sites. I stuffed up their implementation though and I ended up with descriptions that described the waypoint or told you where to land, or both. What I need to do is go back and have a description of the waypoint, and a description of the landing site and pick which ones get shown according to the flight plan. It's a pain but it's what the system needs and it's what the system is about, that's where the value is for me, having a realistic, random mission AND good documentation to go with it so we have a chance of succeeding the first time we fly it. You are also right about the waypoints. I think the way to solve this one is to only show the height of the landing points and leave the fly-over points blank. Thank you for all your great feedback. -
Uke, I would like to do the Mi-8 BUT I don't own the module. I can do it without having it but testing it is difficult so I want to get the Huey done as well as I can, get all the bugs out first, then move over to the Mi-8 knowing I have a good foundation. Черный Дракул, you nailed the next two things I want to do. I want to make them available in the web so I can iterate changes faster. Then look at how to slowly introduce combat. It's not easy to generate random combat missions that make sense. Freebird, that last F3 should be an F1. You are loading troops that are already there (well, mortar tubes, it crashes if I make them troops, it's unrealistic at the FARP but there are static troops in all the other landing sites).

Hi Samek, I hope you really enjoy the missions. CASEVAC,MEDEVAC missions are certainly possible, what do you see as the main difference between that and what we have now in the 'Interesting Missions'? I know there are a LOT of differences but I'm just wondering which ones appeal to you.

I've just released a whole bunch of my 'Interesting Missions' for the Huey, you can read about them here: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=2983010#post2983010

Hi everyone, long story short I made a thing that made 500 missions for the UH-1H. The long story is here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=172869 This could be an interesting flight! The 'Interesting Flights' system is a generator of sort-of-random missions aimed at making sure you never have to fly the same mission twice. They are interesting because you don't know what's going to happen in them. Every mission is different. The flight plan for each mission is generated just for that mission. There is no combat but there IS scoring. The flight plan is complete, well annotated, and can be found on your kneeboard. Below you will find the download link, there are 100 missions in the 'annotated' directory. Their filename gives you some clues about what will happen during the mission (format explained in the post linked above). There are 400 missions in the 'interesting' directory, they don't tell you anything except their difficulty. You can tell the mission difficulty by their filename, the difficulty is the number after the 'D', it ranges from 1 (easy) to 10 (hard). The difficulty determines the mission weather, time of day, aircraft failures, mission type and destinations. The message linked above explains the system, its goals, and what you will find in each mission. It's fairly long! I hope you enjoy it. Mission Briefing Look at the weather forecast on your kneeboard, then checkout the flight plan details. The aim of these missions is to get the aircraft safely back on the ground, sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's hard, sometimes you shouldn't even fly. Make sure there isn't anything wrong with your aircraft during startup. You are not supposed to complete all the 'Interesting Flights', for many, you shouldn't even take off! A lot of the higher numbered flights are just not safe. Make sure the weather and your aircraft are suitable. If not, download another flight. Or download a bunch of them in the first place so you can go trough them quickly. There are plenty there, no reason to ever fly one twice. So don't, they are a lot more fun if you don't know what's going to happen. Rotary Wing Notes Helicopter missions are a bit more involved than the fixed-wing ones. They are either personnel transport or sling loads with sling loads having random weights. The difficulty of the mission you pick (the D number in the filename) will affect the KIND of missions you get too. Low difficulty missions have simple tasks, and as the difficulty ramps up so does the mission complexity. The difficulty also determines WHERE the missions go to. At the lower difficulties you will get shorter flights to low-altitude destinations. At the higher difficulties flights can be longer and high-altitude destinations are a possibility. Difficulty still also affects weather, time, failures etc. All the usual 'interesting missions' warnings apply, make sure you can do the mission given the weather conditions, because you have multiple destinations you will need to check the visibility at your different landing points. Use the provided NDB if needed. Landing point altitudes are provided in the flight plan. PLEASE READ THE PDF PROVIDED IN THE UH-1H directory! It provides a backstory for the operation and explains procedures. I've tried to make it short and useful. WHERE TO GET THE MISSIONS FROM Please read the thread linked above if you don't know what this is all about! You can download the missions from a shared DropBox folder here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/mzic1uoxnyofgm3/AADJTks7pN0nmj1CqpmqUy5oa?dl=0

Hi everyone, I'm uploaded another batch of UH-1H missions. Here are the changes from the previous batch: - I've cleaned up the flight plan. If you are not going to land at a waypoint, the description for the waypoint is left out. It makes it a lot easier to read. I've also moved the mission description to be right above the flight plan so it stands out more. - I've added another six landing locations and also changed the landing site for 'Mount Amjulapa' to be out of the trees. It's in a different peak now. - Before this version, the difficulty determined what types of missions you got, now it also determines WHERE the missions go to. At the lower difficulties you will get shorter flights to low-altitude destinations. At the higher difficulties flights can be longer and high-altitude destinations are a possibility. Difficulty still also affects weather, time, failures etc. I haven't tested all the new landing sites yet so I would love to hear your opinion and any feedback you may have. -

Hi JLX! thanks for letting me know about the kneeboard in 2.0, it makes me wonder how many other little useful things like that are out there. The problem with the altitude is that it's using locations both as landing points and waypoints. As landing points it shows the ground altitude, as waypoints it shows the flight plan altitude. Because all the points list the landing notes and so look the same it's confusing. If you have a look at the mission description at the top of the page and match the landing points to the flight plan waypoint list you'll see that the names mentioned in the mission description are showing ground level altitudes. I'm using CTLD for working out when the swing loads have been dropped in the right area, I think it's being a little too easy on us! -

JLX, I've been looking at the mission files and I can't find anything defining the snap views in there. There is supposed to be a 'config' directory if the snap views are set by the mission but there isn't one in this missions. I did find a config file in there but there isn't any snap view information in there. Can you please double check this for me by quickly setting up a snap view or two in some other mission, then try a new mission from this batch and see if the snap views are reset? -

I think your briefing comments and suggestions for the flight plan and briefing are spot on. I've been thinking about how to better annotate the flight plan since your post. Now I just need the time to update the code. There is a hints page in the kneeboard? I can't check right now but that's a surprise too! I'll add the length to the briefing document notes. I've just slowly climbed till I felt the bump but it's not always a ... smooth transition. Interesting about the engine temperature and icing. I've been keeping an eye on the exhaust temperature needle a lot more as I work out how to fine tune the sling load weights (want them to be marginal to lift at the higher altitude sites) and I've noticed that the way I normally fly has the temperature out of the green zone a LOT. -

Thanks JLX, I will start working on some of those in the next few days. A couple of comments! - There isn't a LOT at the FARP. Just the basics really. I'm not sure what's happening there, I'm not doing anything fancy. I'll double check the template mission just to make sure I'm not doing anything silly. - In mission 100 for this set there are no failures. The ice light you got was for real. Probably the aircraft measuring the outside air temperature and letting you know to keep an eye on things. I'm not sure. Overheating ? I'm not sure, was it a very heavy sling load? -

Hi everyone! The first batch of UH-1H missions are ready! They are not everything I want them to be yet but they are functional and I hope you will get a lot of fun out of them. As I mentioned earlier these missions are either personnel transport or sling loads with sling loads having random weights. The difficulty of the mission you pick (the D number in the filename) will affect the KIND of missions you get too. Low difficulty missions have simple tasks, and as the difficulty ramps up so does the mission complexity. All the usual 'interesting missions' warnings apply, make sure you can do the mission given the weather conditions, because you have multiple destinations you will need to check the visibility at your different landing points. Use the provided NDB if needed. Landing point altitudes are provided in the flight plan. Make sure the aircraft is ok during startup etc. PLEASE READ THE PDF PROVIDED IN THE UH-1H directory! It explains lots and I've tried to make it short and useful. You don't need a Dropbox account to access the files. To download the PDF and missions go to the Dropbox link below and select Published Missions->UH-1H, then either 'Annotated' if you want a hint of what's in the mission (mission description is in the filename), or 'Interesting' if you want to be surprised. Interesting Missions at Dropbox If you haven't flown my 'Interesting Missions' before please read the first and maybe second posts in this thread, they explain the system, weather report format and my motivation for making these. Ok, if you've read this far, thank you! Here is what still has to be done: - For some reason I get crashes if you are picking up groups of troops with people in them ... yup. I don't know where the problem is or how I am going to fix it but in the meantime you will be picking up mortar tubes! There is other scenery at the pickup and drop off sites so it's not too bad ... - Need more destinations, there are six there now, and they are semi-interesting, but lots more are needed. - More difficulty tuning and failures. As I hope to be updating these often over the next few weeks I've only made 40 annotated and 100 interesting missions. As things settle down a bit more I'll go over to the usual 100/400 split. Again, I hope you enjoy the missions, please let me know what you think. -
I know this is probably not what you are after but there are a lot of 'interesting flights' for it here: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=174438

That sounds like an interesting job! Thanks for the suggestions, I am about to start working on the documentation for the missions and I will make sure to include details about the pickup zone and also mission scoring. My plan right now is to get a first draft of both the missions and the documentation out as soon as I can and then get feedback from you fine folk on both. -

Hi JLX, that landing point was my screw-up. I've fixed it since that mission was generated. The landing points are placed by hand in a template mission, and the map editor really doesn't make it obvious how much of a slope there is there! I've been thinking about your question of what to do if the mission can't be completed. The landing point is fixed now so it shouldn't happen again BUT I'm going to go through your points: - Just leave? yes, it's not practical in DCS to radio the troops to move them so yeah, just leave if you can't do it. Or if the swing load is too heavy. But also, don't just LEAVE! Was it possible to put just the tip of the skids on the ground? that could have been an option. There are a lot of buildings there too, maybe try landing on the roof of one of them? I'm not sure if that particular mission supports those options, not sure if my generator ever will but I would love to have missions that make you of those things. - Hover over the landing zone? not for pickup, but the script uses CTLD so maybe you can do that for drop offs. - Radio? no, probably not, that kind of scripting gets complicated and fragile fast. What really got me thinking about your email has to do with the concept of a completed mission. From the point of view of the people on the ground, if you don't get them out moved then you really haven't completed the mission. From YOUR point of view though, if you get the aircraft back on the ground safely, preferably close to your base the mission is completed enough. You can't be hovering on the side of a mountain for too long. If anything breaks (and things will!) you are dead. Not enough room to enter an autorotation and if you land where you are you will roll all the way down the mountain. I wonder in reality how often that happens. Where people to be extracted just can't be found. Or the landing zones are not suitable, swing loads too heavy, weather too bad. -
Ok, I worked out the issue, I wasn't setting the aircraft callsign properly!

Everyone, I need a little bit of help. The UH-1H missions are almost ready to go but I can't seem to communicate with the FARP. I've started a thread in the mission editing forum but there doesn't seem to be any answers there. Thread is here : https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=177873 . I hope that maybe in this thread there may be more huey owners! I'm fairly sure I've got the radios set up properly. I've attached a sample mission below and would really appreciate it if you could give it a go and see if you can figure out what I am doing wrong. Thank you, it's good to see that it's not something particular to my system. Now I hope someone out there has an answer!
-
Thank you for the quick answer Kang! , I have the distribution panel rotary set to '2' and I've set the frequency in the UHF radio by using the presets AND manually. Does the mission work for you?
-
Hi everyone, I am having trouble with the mission I will attach below. For some reason I don't get any audio when talking to the FARP. It seems like the commands are getting through because I get updates on the F10 menu. For example, if I ask for startup clearance the next time I go to the menu I get the option to ask for take-off clearance. However, I don't hear my own voice or the voice of the controller coming back. I also don't see the subtitles for what would normally be said. I have 'easy comms' turned off. The FARP is on UHF channel 2. I can't shake the feeling that I am doing something wrong in the mission setup but I don't know what it could be. Can anyone please help? It's driving me crazy! The Interesting Missions Generator
emolina replied to emolina's topic in User Created Missions General
I just wanted to take a few minutes (while some missions are being generated!) to let you folks know what I am planning to do with the helicopter missions. That's the crux of the matter right there, these aren't just flights any more, for helicopters they need to be missions, and because they interact with the ground so much (mostly in expected ways), there needs to be scenery too. Can't just fly between airbases either, I needed to have some interesting places to go to as well. So I've put together a system that generates four types of missions. - taking troops from the starting point (a FARP right now) to a destination - bringing troops from a destination back to the starting point - taking troops between two locations that are not the starting point. - taking swing loads of varying weights between two locations that are not the starting point. At the lowest difficulty levels you only get the first two mission types. At the highest you only get the last two. Missions take place in a relatively small area around Alahadzy but eventually I will grow the area a little and add more places to go to within the covered area. Missions will be for the UH-1H to start off with, then when they're working well and things are settled I'll move onto the Mi-8. I don't think I will be able to generate interesting attack helicopter missions with the current system. I've attached a couple of kneeboard pages for a difficulty 1 mission below. Please let me know if you have any questions. -

hsth, I picked my words poorly when I said 'I want them to be totally random'. What I should have said is that I would like the missions to be generated for you every time you want one. Instead of you having two pick ones to download from a huge list. You are right that the information for each aircraft should be more easily accessible than by going back through this thread! Thanks Matador! Ideally I would like to make it so that you can pre-flight while sitting in the cockpit and looking through your kneeboard. I personally really like that feeling.
