Thanks everyone, really appreciate you weighing in, I'm convinced too

If an F-14B was going to join a fight, you'd think its go-to would be its BVR capability, but for whatever reason, sometimes the distance closes before you get a BVR shot off. I'm trying to work out how much a real-world F-14B pilot would want to engage in BFM vs the Flanker or Fulcrum, two of the best threat aircraft of its day. If the cold war had gone hot, how much of a contribution would pilots expect the F-14B's relevant dogfighting ability to have made to its kill outcomes against these airframes? To make this a specific question: 1 F-14B v 1 Su-27 or MiG-29 with the objectives for each being to down the other and land safely. 20 000 ft ASL, 2 IR missiles each with Russians having HMS available, all other factors being neutral besides airframe, 10 nm range. Does the F-14B pilot seek to engage the threat aircraft in BFM? I would love your opinions on who would win, how and by how much, I worded the original question the way I did not to assume an outcome but because I was asking about the Tomcat pilot's decision-making, rather than how the fight might turn out. Thanks for your attention.

No need to be sarcastic. Raven never said the pilot model was a greater priority or more important than your lighting issue, IronMike listed outstanding items and this was mentioned as one. Your issue is not the only one being talked about in the thread.

Do we have any official word on this? Nodak - I think too-cool was referring to your comment "there's quick ways to get rid of that carp"...

Do we expect any major increase in the demand for graphics power in the next couple of years? I remember the huge difference when we went from 1.5 to 2.x a few years ago, wondering if we’ll see any big changes in the next couple. Planning a graphics upgrade and wondering how much headroom I’ll need.

*This morning I was able to get into this mission, but it crashed when I tried to load the PG landing IA straight after, so I'm going to try some other modules (I never fly anything other than the Tomcat) in case this is a DCS problem instead of an F-14 problem. I will repost if it's just the F-14*

Thanks, appreciate the suggestion. I did try using the master reset and I even audibled in the emergency wing sweep handle but I still had no luck sadly, but I'm glad to have had another option to pursue. I think I have this figured out now, I think it's the effect of having the flaps down while overspeeding. Retracting the flaps once under 225 knots without attempting to sweep the wings first didn't allow the wings to sweep. However, if I slowed down to under 225 knots I could extend the flaps, try to sweep the wings and then retract the flaps, and the wings still swept no problem. Maybe this is an effect that is deliberately baked in to provide the 'correct' results whenever someone overspeeds with flaps extended? Either way I think we have it sussed now, thanks Golo and Draconus for the help

Oh ok awesome, thanks for the tip, I’ll try that! Much appreciated

I think they would have been jammed before full retraction, I usually try to sweep to 68 degrees, observe that they haven’t moved and then look at them and realise the flaps are out. So I’d have to land with wings at 20 all the way... I guess that’s not so bad since they’d be like that from the downwind anyway. Thanks for replying

Sometimes when I start one of the Instant Action landing missions I forget and leave the flap lever on my hotas in the 'down' position when I start the new mission. If I try to sweep the wings back while the flaps are extended, they won't sweep to 68 degrees after that, even after the flaps have been retracted. Does anyone know a way to make the wings sweep back in this situation?

That's great, thanks Quid. I guess finding an F-14 publication to rival Gordon and Komissarov's texts is a tall order. I have seen the Gilchrist book around and I think I've seen The Great Book of Modern Warplanes around too, and thanks for giving me the year to make sure it's the right edition

Can anyone suggest any reference-style books on the F-14? I have a few Tomcat books and I've seen a few more, but they are more like collections of anecdotes. These accounts are great for getting a feel for what it was like to develop, maintain and fly the 'Cat and they have plenty of information marbled through, but it's hard to know where to look for an answer to a question or a specific piece of information. I'd love to get an F-14 book something like the books Yefim Gordon wrote on red air, but anything in a reference style would be welcome. Books I already own: Grumman F-14 Tomcat Owners' Workshop Manual: All models 1970-2006 - Tony Holmes Jane's How to Fly and Fight in the F-14 Tomcat (At the Controls) - David Rockwell Tomcat Fury: A Combat History of the F-14 - Mike Guardia Iranian F-14 Tomcat Units in Combat (Combat Aircraft Book 49) - Tom Cooper and others Thanks H

I hope someone can help, I have searched and found other topics relating to this, but I tried the remedies in those and had no luck. Whenever I try to get into the game (OpenBeta) I get an "authorization failed" message saying my modules will be unavailable. This has started immediately after downloading the most recent update this morning (EDIT: stable seems to be unaffected by this problem). I have tried: changing my password (please note I have not received any error for an invalid password), logging out and in and going offline and then online, flushing my DNS cache and turning automatic time and time zone on and off. EDIT: I also tried turning off the domain, public and private firewalls as well as Windows Defender real-time protection (with the Eagle Dynamics folder and DCS.exe excluded from scans) all at the same time, with no change. I also confirmed I had internet access by doing a little net surfing and running a speedtest that came up normal. I only reinstalled DCS a few days ago after reinstalling Windows 10, and I was initially getting error code 500 fails with the DCS window just being a black screen. I was able to fix that by enabling automatic time zone, and until this problem DCS was working as expected. DCS log, DxDiag and screenshot attached. dcslog.zip DxDiag.zip

You know, I read that news three times and managed to miss that second point. Much appreciated, sorry for wasting everyone’s time

Glad to see ED giving plenty of notice about the end of Windows 7 support. I would like to know about what these people can expect once official support does end. Is it just that users will have to troubleshoot their own installs and refunds will not be payable for paid content that doesn't work properly, or should they anticipate the game not running properly in the near future? If problems running the game can be expected, are they likely to be game-breaking, and is there anything users can do to mitigate these issues (eg turning down particular settings)? I'm on Windows 10 so I'm not too stressed either way, but I figure someone will come looking for this information at some point... Cheers

Awesome, thanks for linking that TOViper, good explanation there

As above, it just will not let me check the box for it in the 'EX' tab. Never had any difficulty enabling before, no idea what might have caused the change, and everything else appears to be normal. Would love some help with this, ideally I'd prefer to avoid needing to think about the PTT switch while arguing with Jester about whether he sees the hostile at the position he just told me :P

Thanks for replying, I hadn’t considered it might be changed because it needed improvement. Much appreciated

I know the the FC3 aircraft don't have the Advanced Systems Modelling of the full fidelity modules. I'm curious about how faithful the -29's interaction with the main systems that are there (man-machine interface) are to the real deal. I know a lot of stuff won't be there, but I'm curious about things like whether I'd be able to use IRL -29 information to learn the radar modes it does have (ie I wouldn't mind if LTWS is completely omitted, but if it is included, would using it be something like it was on the real thing). I ask mainly because I see a few books and a manual available, and I wanted to know if they might be useful for learning the systems that are there, and also because I hear the F-15 radar modes that are included diverge significantly from the real thing, so I thought that might be true of the Fulcrum too. Thanks

When can we expect more info about A-10C v2?
Horns replied to amalahama's topic in DCS: A-10C II Tank Killer
I'm not certain, but I think the F/A-18 sub arrived in 2015... EDIT: Could be 2017, but still... -
Could we please revert the thread title back to what it was and move this thread back to the general sub? The thread was asking if I was seeing the symbology as I should have, not requesting anything new be included. I like seeing our aircraft represented faithfully, whether that makes them easier or harder to use.

Success! Thanks, believe it or not I skimmed to where I saw the 'Scan sector' command mentioned... on the very next page  Much appreciated, fingers crossed something else in your day becomes inexplicably easier to balance this out
