  1. I just got a VFX grip, and am having a similar problem with the set screw (the non twist was out of stock, boo). The set screw is very deep, as it should be as per the pics in this thread, but it's not catching the stick, and it still twists freely, without the point of the set grub screw making contact at all. It's not cross threaded, I'm using a very good driver, but if I push any harder/further it's going to strip it, or possibly break/crack the stick. It literally won't go any further, and it's not locking the twist.

Anyone know what size of set screw grub/whatever the silver/metal colored screw is, so I can try and find a longer one locally? From Virpil forums it looks like support is pretty busy/overwhelmed right now, and this will be a pretty low priority I'll bet, and I'd like to try and fix this myself. All I need is the M1/M2/whatever number for the set screw, and I'll order/find one myself that is longer and will work (hopefully).

Edit - fixed this, thought I'd post my experience in case anyone else has a similar issue as me and the other in this thread. There is two cylinder sections this set screw most go through to lock the stick. What happened with mine is that they weren't lined up quite perfectly, so the set screw would stop/get stuck prior to the tip hitting the metal/black cylinder part it needed to in order to lock. I took the stick apart to see what has happening, re assembled it, and just wiggled the stick left/right about 1/2 a MM or so (twist action movement basically) while gently backing off/moving forward the set screw until it started moving through the 2nd cylinder, and driving about another 2 or 3mm further than where it got stuck for me at first. Then it locked up perfectly as it should. If anyone else here at DCS has a similar problem in the future, PM me as I have vid/pics of what happened with mine which will help, including disassembly/etc of the stick. Now it's locked, what a great F14 stick this is.

  2. Thanks!

I am extremely pleased with the rig and with the Rift S. I spend many hours a week with that headset on.

Have been since getting it in May, just keeps on working great every time, no muss no fuss.

Ditto, I have the Index, Rift S and Reverb. The Rift S is "bulletproof", or at least has been for me, very simple to set up and run. Occulus has that nailed compared to WMR IMO - plus ask any sim developer, and they much prefer working with the Oculus drivers/etc, much more robust so I'm told. The Rift S isn't as high a res, but it still looks great, in fact I replaced 3 Samsung Odyseey + with 3 Rift S for our gaming PCs back when it came out, and the Rift S surprised me, as based on specs I didn't think it would perform in DCS so well as it does.

Again, while there are higher res options available, I still have no problem enthusiastically recommending the Rift S, especially for first time/newer VR users. Even for $ no object more veteran VR users, the Rift S is still a good option too.

  3. Agreed, +1 here, and the other 2 sim pilots in our home vote the same. I was so impressed with Heatblur's F14 release, and this JF17 release from Deka has shown that Heatblur's work doesn't have to be a one trick pony in ED's family. Congrats Deka. Every person I know who has bought the JF17 has a similar opinion too.

    Fanastic.

  4. Your absolutely right. We didn't need those either. Deka has said the next module will either be a J-8II F or a Q-5. Personally I'll be thrilled for either.

Wow, both of those were on my wishlist for Deka's next future module. Fantastic if that's correct information! I'd love to see them do a J10 as well, that's a superb modern fighter that would be a great addition to "red air" here in DCS. I'm SO impressed with the work Deka has done with the JF17 - I can't wait to see what they come up with next. They really do have a lot of options, J16 and JH7 for 2 seaters, the J8II F or Q5 as stated, J10, etc.

  5. This guy. This guy has it going on. I love me my flight sims, but I could never work in development for them. Well, I bailed on development as a whole, so, it doesn't matter! Still, this dude right here knows what is up.

+1. The amount of incredibly hard work/time that goes into developing these simulation games, for an incredibly small market compared to typical AAA games (and even non AAA games)...we're so fortunate to have something like DCS/3rd party devs at all. Do I wish we'd get more complete modules in EA release? Sure, everyone does, but the reality is these companies have business models with very, very slim margins IMO, and ED doing it the way they are right now is very likely to be the only way it's even financially feasible.

Just my opinion, but I'd bet the farm I'm correct that it's either EA or nothing. It would however be nice if EA releases gave more information to the customer about our expectations in terms of time frames/etc on future updates to EA products.

  6. Beats me what I will get. Now "maybe" friday. So 2 weeks instead of 1-2 days.

The ****ed thing being is that you can sure buy a shiny new one online and have it next day.

Heh, if they were telling me 2 weeks (I've sent back 2 already), I'd be buying one of those new ones, and then do a return immediately once I got it, and send them the broken one back in the box.

  7. I'm just read reports and checking benchmarks and calculating performances per $.

I could send you here that much references you will spend the days not hours to watch it all but this one video will describe in the best way what I'm talking about.

That video is using the 2080 Super for the 9900k, and a 2080ti for the Ryzen. I've seen a few instances of any AMD cpu with the same video card being faster in games than the 9900k - but it's not the majority, by far. You're right though that 4k/VR it's very, very close all things being equal other than the CPU.

  8. I see a few people said NO to the OP question - all opinions are valid here, and I understand why someone would say No, and that a "proper" full HOTAS is almost a requirement for DCS. I said in my first response that the OP would be fine with the setup he mentioned, but it is true he would benefit in the future with a better hotas setup.

To that end, I really highly recommend searching various used markets for a new DCS player like the OP, once he's ready, wiling, and able to get himself into a higher end HOTAS. I've collected hotas since the 1990s, and have several dozen hotas set ups as well as a bunch of stand alone sticks/throttles I've been sent for review and/or bought over the years. I have all the new VKB/Virpil models, 6 custom rudders and 4 factory peds, and will have 2 Hotas/Sticks more once the VKB GF 3/F14 setup is on sale, and my RealSim base gets here.

Based on this experience, IMO the best bet for a new pilot like the OP is to find himself a good used set of CH Products F16 Combat/fighter stick, throttle, and pedals. They aren't absolutely ideal, or the best now, but as an upgrade from the OP's current setup, are an excellent step up, and can be found for very good deals. I've picked off 2 full CH setups in the last year from the sources I check daily here in Canada, one was a F16 Fighterstick/CH throttle combo for $40 CAD, and they were new, as in brand new and not touched (wife's husband had left her and left his PC gaming stuff behind with the house contents). I've seen CH pedals in good condition for $50 CAD. Anyhow, point being, the OP will be able to find something like this with a bit of patience and searching as well, and is again why I strongly suggest searching used markets. CH Products are a good used option, as their price is usually pretty good, and the quality and longevity is good as well. Pre 2006 CH stuff is actually better than the newer stuff, as one CH was bought out that year it went from a company of caring sim workers to a large place that has their stuff made in a mass production company.

  9. Hey all,

I'm interested in getting DCS Worlds F18 module and learning it, coming from X-Plane 11s more complex addons.

I have good PC with a Rift S which I built for simming, but only the T16000m FCS Hotas without rudder pedals. I don't want to buy rudder pedals just yet (a bit limited on space) but I know this is an incredibly detailed simulation so, how would I fare with the F18 using the paddle rudder on the throttle + VR? I am guessing it'll still be a good immersive experience?

I'm mainly looking to (eventually) fly the multiplayer coop servers, and blue flag events. I know choppers are a no go, same with WW2 birds and things like the F14.

    Thanks

Not only will you be fine, some actually prefer a simpler setup for DCS. LOTS of players of all kinds of sims prefer to have a rocker/twist/whatever for rudder axis.

  10. IMO your best bet is to just buy another TWCS. I've found them for $50 USD on sale and for 20 to 30$ USD used in as new condition. If the Virpil throttle is out of your price range or is overkill, I imagine the TM WH throttle is as well. The only other options really are the CH which you already mentioned, and the TWCS, so far as stand alone throttles go.

I used to be able to luck out and pick off TM Cougar Hotas for $50 to 100 CAD in great condition here in Canada a couple times per year, but it's been 18 months since I've found one that wasn't overpriced. If you can find a Cougar hotas/throttle, grabbing that and picking up a USB adapter is about the only other option I can think of, and will certainly cost more, probably 2x, than what a TWCS will.

  11. I'd say GFX card first. More RAM should help too. But really everything is the answer. I had a laptop with very similar specs, so no "component" upgrades were possible, and I went to the whole new rig.

If you have the $, my answer is this -

Open window. Pick up PC case. Drop towards foot. Kick hard towards window. Wave as it goes bye-bye out said window. Purchase 9900k and 2080ti like the rest of us pinheads who spend far too much $ on this hobby. The end.

Seriously though - yes, GPU is probably your best bet, by some margin, but I don't think swapping to a faster CPU in that MB/platform will yield all that much of an improved performance either. IMO I agree with others that a 1080ti used is probably the best option bang for buck wise if you want to upgrade anything with that system.

  12. If TM made a new and better gimbal for the stick, I would. I have 2 complete TM WH hotas and 2 more WH sticks/bases. Every base but one which is essentially new, I've had to tear apart and service. TM's support is a thumbs down from me, but the metal stick and throttle are decent IMO. Gimbal - not so much.

  13. I've got a lot of hotas already, but just recently decided to give the Realsimulator FSSB R3 L a whirl anyhow, mainly due to the Falcon module coming so soon. Still figuring it out, but it's fantastic so far as an F16 type stick goes. The only similar stick I have is the X65F, and it's miles ahead of that so far as I can tell with about 3 hours total using it thus far. I was lucky and found my R3 used, very little time on it, probably just a handful of hours from a player who couldn't get used to it for a WW2 online MMO sim.

You may want to PM Deano87, he gave me the initial advice and info regarding the R3 L/Realsim, and he and many he flies with have been using this stick for much, much longer than I have, and can give you a better run down on what to expect. IMO so far as getting the most realistic hotas setup for the upcoming Falcon module here with DCS, it's the best option for the stick. I'm going to use one of my modded Cougar F16 throttles with a usb adaptor for my throttle. the R3 L for the stick, and probably my Slaw pedals for my F16 hotas setup myself.

Anyhow, PM Deano87 or search his user name and look at some of the threads where he's posted info here already, that's your best bet IMO.

  14. I had a similar problem, same exact symptoms, neither Windows or Virpil software would see my buttons, by the axis worked (sort of, but it worked). Same exact scenario too, I went with a T50 CM 1 stick on a WH base, to a first gen when they first came out T50 base, and then put the original Virpil T50 CM1 Stick on the new Virpil base.

What had happened was the pins in the connectors sort of "formed" or "got used to" the Warthog connector plug, which was slightly different with a bit different tolerances, so one of the pins in my new Virpil base/stick wouldn't connect right. I pulled out the stick cable about an inch or so, so I could physically see how it was connecting to the new Virpil base. Then I straightened the pins out a bit, re plugged it good and solid into the Virpil base, and then the buttons and axes (everything) started to work again properly.

Not saying this is your problem, but I suggest taking your Virpil stick off your new Virpil base, have a good look at the pins/connector, even take a pic or vid of it and post it here if you can - and then try what I said or ask Virpil to walk you through that (they told me how to do this, but it's simple, just gently pull the plug on the stick out a short bit to give it some slack).

  15. I really like this stick now - I much prefer to have my analogue mini stick on my dominant hand/stick side, as for me it's much more accurate than trying to move it with my left hand/thumb on a throttle. I have the other available Virpil sticks including a couple of the Delta's, but I find the Delta's aren't set up that great for simming, more for space/Star Citizen, and the analogue stick is easy enough to reach, but the center/top hat isn't even with pretty large hands.

So, this stick fits the bill for me, more of a sim setup than the Delta, and has the analogue hat in a perfect spot IMO. I'll be buying one at least, plus the F14 stick whenever it comes out too.

  16. It's personal pref, but the Virpil cam WITH the detent is miles ahead of the TM WH cam. The Virpil without the detente is as well. You'll just have to try it and see which you prefer, the difference is subtle so far as the center detentes go IMO, but the movement as you get further out in the stick throw, the difference in cams becomes a bit more noticeable. I use the no detente Virpil cams for my space games, and with detente for sims. You'll like both a lot more than your TM stick/gimbal, I'll tell you that for nothing.

So far as speed regarding the processing and delivery, patience will need to be a virtue. It's been highly variable for the 5 orders I've made in total, but none were super fast, that's for sure. It's the ONLY thing I've found that VKB did a bit better - I ordered one of my Gunfighters on a Thursday night at 11pm, and got it the next Tuesday at 9am. That's not going to happen with Virpil due to both their shipping method (blah) and their processing time - and how busy they are right now . That said, the wait is WELL worth it. Just be prepared for it, and don't fuss too much about it. Most likely within 7 business days you'll order will ship. After that, it's done to the gods and the universal mail/whatever they use truly effing sucks IMO, but it's what they and we are stuck with.

  17. I lived and worked in Hong Kong for most of a year back in 1996. I did business on the mainland (when forced too) as well. There are many great Chinese people, like the OP and the other DCS Chinese players he mentions. Unfortunately there is a systemic abuse of copyright and other standard business practices we take for granted in Western/Russia/Etc countries.

If I were in ED's shoes, this would be my position - since it'll be nearly impossible to stop this, or get any financial compensation, why not embrace it. Any publicity is good publicity, being the theory, and there is a massive, massive potential client base in China. As the OP stated, there is a HUGE upswell in interest in military things among Chinese, especially the upcoming generation. Many have a lot of expendable income now, compared to the past generation, and the more who get into DCS/sims, the better it is for the developers, and hence all the rest of us.

Making a big stink about this will serve little purpose IMO, as again, nothing much will come of it based on past experience, and as others have said here, larger US companies who have gotten the "tough crap" card when they've tried legal sanctions. Best course of action IMO, I repeat, is to try and exploit the exploiters here, and somehow get some advertising of DCS/ED's own going in China. Not sure on how this will work what with the "Golden Shield" PRC government firewall and rules, but if DCS is "allowed", or even at worst "grey area"...again, ED could stand to make a lot of $ from future potential Chinese players.

OP/Eagle Sur Pekin, and other Chinese players, I wish you all the best, and am very glad you're part of this community. The J11 and future Chinese DCS modules have the potential to be fantastic additions here. The more Chinese players, the better IMO.

I realize news like this can be a piss off, and rightfully so, having lost a business and been forced to leave Hong Kong with the 1997 handover myself. ED/the rest of us, are well within rights to be outraged over this blatent type of theft. Again, it's not abnormal in China for companies to rip stuff and and pull this crap, and there is little real recourse within China to deal with it. It'd be a better option to have Chinese DCS players state on these stolen games forums/etc to post about DCS and ED, and recommend any fans of this "stolen" IP we're seeing in the OP videos, to check out DCS for real themselves. Out of the several million members mentioned by the OP, if even a fraction of a percent try out a DCS module, that's a massive kick in the $ pants for ED.

  18. In Canada the Reverb is listed as "in stock" now on the HP Canada website. It says 1 to 2 weeks for delivery, so we'll see how long it takes, as I ordered mine yesterday.

Hopefully it is the "new gen", if it isn't, and I have any trouble with the cord/etc, it's going right back for a refund.

  19. OP/Jason, are you certain the base/gimbal is dead as well?

I have an extra TM A10/WH stick or two kicking around, and would be willing to help you out. PM me, I'd prefer to have a phone/voice call with you to troubleshoot your base, I have quite a number of extra parts (I've had many TM WH units since they came out, 4 currently, and tons of parts from the repairs/gimbal improvements/etc I've made with various sticks and throttles).

Don't give up. Worst case, I'm sure you can sell that F18 stick for what you have into it, I'll pay retail for it from you if nothing else to help you out, but I do think this is salvageable in terms of the gimbal/base. I also have a bid in this week on a used Cougar and Warthog set here in Canada, might end up getting the WH stick/base (no throttle, which you don't need unless you broke it too - sorry, mild attempt at humor), for $100 CAD or about 78$ USD. Plus I have a couple of mine sitting around doing nothing as I said. Anyhow, again, contact/PM me, and I'll see what I can do to help you out. I know it must suck getting a new stick like the F18 and having your trusty old reliable 10 year old WH bite the dust at last, pretty bad timing. Seeing that you're in Canada simplifies things greatly as well on my end....

  20. Back when I was editor @combatsim.com, I had a writer/friend named Andy Bush, who was a retired USAF pilot, that flew the F4 in Vietnam, the F104, F15, and the A10 as well. He had a lot of A10 time in Europe during the Cold War. I'll look up some of his articles/posts I've saved, but he echoes much of what's being said here IIRC - the A10 was NOT optimal for killing T6x,T72, T80, etc Soviet tanks with the GAU 8 30mm.

Lining up for the optimal shot, a low altitude/slant range shot from the rear of the tanks, also put the A10 right over the Soviet primary AAA defenses like the ZSU23/4 and other mobile SAMS and guns - bad news. 30mm was great vs AFV and trucks, in fact that was its primary purpose from what he wrote and said, not killing heavy MBTs. Lots of 30mm ammunition also meant a lot of logistical vehicles in the enemy rear could be zapped per mission, while the M1 tanks and AH1/AH64 used their missiles vs Soviet tanks.

Again, I'll find some of his articles and post links later tonight.
