  1. Running the latest DCS open beta version (using MT) and finding when I run some of SP instant action missions for the WW2 aircraft (such as spitfire, P47 or Mustang) and over Normandy map seem to be getting almost no ground/flak fire even when I fly right over the enemy (german) positions? (even thought in dogfights the enemy aircraft are firing) - just wondering what might be causing this and if there is a setting I need to change to get this working properly?(AI level for example)

    1) yes when you select load profile and browse the folder structure, you should be able to find your old bindings saved in Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\Config\Input folder.

eg my throttle bindings are saved in the file "VPC Throttle MT-50CM3 {3829FD80-4545-11ee-800B-444553540000}.diff.lua"

If there's two files named after your device, one will be the old bindings that you had an the newer one could be based on the new ID after changing USB assignments.

Usually the one with larger file size is the one you want, in any case take a backup and can try again if you pick the wrong one.

    2) Yes MSFS ensure you have eye tracking turned on in Pimax software, and in PimaxXR companion app. Then running MSFS with OpenXR toolkit (ctrl F2 to open) enable it and the preset eg "balanced". Quadviews setting won't even be looked at by the toolkit or MSFS since it only works in DCS and Pavlov, it won't hurt anything either. Mine is on always.

    Thanks

I managed to get it all working - only issue is on MSFS with a quality wide preset I am maybe getting 4 or 5 fps improvement (DCS gave me around 20!)

Losing control inputs can happen because Virpil devices often get re-assigned new Windows device IDs when changing USB ports. Might be something in their firmware, because I have VKB, Virpil, Total Controls and Winwing which are all fine when changing ports EXCEPT for my Virpil throttle.

    Are your pedals also Virpil?

The fix is fairly easy though but you have to do it for every aircraft you've mapped (and every other game/sim).

In DCS controls menu, at the top of each device use the dropdown to "load profile". Do that for every plane and it's restored.

    image.png

The alternative is to map just one button so it creates a new GUID file in the Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\Config\Input folder. Once you see the new file you know the new GUID, so go and rename your old Virpil device to the old GUID.

It's a real pain when you have alot of modules and other sims.

For this reason I try not to switch my Virpil throttle between ports.

You can leave Quadviews enabled all the time, only two games support it so it won't hurt other apps they just ignore it.

The other options "prefer framerate.." and "lock to half framerate" will affect all apps though and need to be changed any time you want different.

    Thanks for the reply:

1)so for the control question I am actually using a Virpil stick (also have a few other devices connected via a hub!) so when u say select  “load profile” at the top do u mean I then need to select a saved profile to load or by clicking the button it loads up what was bound on that controller previously?

2)so in terms of trying FR with MSFS what’s the best way - have been told all I need to do is in the openXR in game menu I need to enable FR + preset then select a preset from below and it should work or is there a better way?(will leaving the quad view option selected in openXR app if it doesn’t interfere)

Before playing MSFS you can uncheck the box for Use Quadview in the PimaxXr app, and leave the box for use Eye Tracking checked.
But it seems like OpenXr toolkit itself remember different settings for different games correctly.

thanks for the advice will give it a try after I have tweaked DCS - I am told the best way to set FR up in MSFS is simply to select FR in the openXR in game settings and then just select a preset in the same menu - is this your experience or is there a better way?

  5. 6 hours ago, Peedee said:

Not much you need to to in OpenXR Toolkit if you got Quadviews working. Quadviews in itself adds 70% sharpening as default, so don't do any additional in OpenXR Toolkit. But in the OpenXR Toolkit System menu, you can use Override Resolution and set a lower resolution than what your Pimax Play gave you as starting point. I did that. Pimax Play set to Normal(or 1 I think) on thePimax Play Resolution panel gives about 4309x5100 or something. I lowered that with OpenXR toolkit to about 3800x4400 or something like that.

So in OpenXR Toolkit don't use FSR/NIS scaling or sharpening, and don't use anything from Foveated rendering in there either. That is now handled by Quadviews.

Mind you, I did not change anything withQuadviews with Tallymouse companion app.

    thanks will try these settings.....

also unrelated questions (and no idea if you play MSFS) - the FR is done in a different way on MSFS although the apps used are the same - just wondering if all the apps remember your settings for each sim or do you need to set everything up again as you switch between sims? - also does have the quad app installed mess up the FR  for MSFS?

With the help of Mbucchia & Omni, we wrote a more detailed guide about using Quads with the Crystal:

    https://pimax.com/quad-views-foveated-rendering-for-pimax-crystal/

Thanks for the guide very helpful!

1)was unaware of the tally mouse companion app but will give it a try - assume this just lets u tweak the quad view settings - also are your preferred setting much difference from the stock settings?

2)for quad view setup i realise u need to restore all the open XR in game menu settings to default - is the recommendation that they are kept as default once it’s all

setup - or are u able to lower the resolution from 4000x to 3000x  for example or add in some sharpening and it will still work correctly?

Thank you so much for that feature. 🤩

    1. No matter how you start DCS (with the in game option or the shortcut with the VR start parameters), DCS will not be looking if a VR session is already running. If you haven't started the Pimax VR session, you have to quit the DCS session again.

    2. There are 2 (3 with foveated rendering) separate tools you should install in order. 1. The OpenXR toolkit 2. Pimax OpenXR 3. https://github.com/mbucchia/Quad-Views-Foveated/wiki

The OpenXR toolkit gives you the opportunity to do config some of your ingame settings (sharpening, upscaling, etc.) to get a better PQ and a better performance.

Quad-Views-Foveated gives your DFR (an eye tracking feature, to get more performance too).

If you follow the link, mbucchia will show you in which order you have to install which tool and why. If you can read, and you do read, it's a no-brainer. 😉

    hf

    thanks got it working!

    couple more question

1)I know you have to reset all the options in the openXR (ctrlf2) screen to default - once its all running should I drop the resolution in the openXR options to 3500x (from the 4000x) and also is it ok to enable something like FSR sharpening when using it? - also in the openxr settings is there any other way to navigate it except with the f keys?

2)finally noob question - have a new few devices connected (virpil stick throttle and some rudder) -  spent a bit of time assigning the devices to the right axis and then saved everything to a .lua file however the next time I played the bindings seem to have mostly disappeared and when I try and load the profile not everything seems to be restored - just wondering what I might be doing wrong if you can point me to a good setup guide?

DCS goes straight to VR its not as modern as MSFS and being able to switch in and out with a button press.

At a mni you need the Crystal software and PimaxXR Control  Panel
    https://github.com/mbucchia/Pimax-OpenXR/releases

    Thanks for the reply

1)when u say goes straight to VR assume u mean when u check the VR box in the far right VR menu it restarts the sim in VR?

2)if yes that’s exactly what I did - I had Pimax VR running open VR and also the main pimax software all running and it just restarted the game back into 2d even though the  VR box was ticked?

3)any idea what might be wrong or if I am missing some other software (heard of some other software called composite (not sure of exact name)) or do I just need the same apps I use for  MSFS ?(currently not running steamvr or windows mixed reality do I need any of these ones running?)

This issue is still occurring with the latest DCS Open Beta version and latest AMD Chipset Drivers. Here is a picture from yesterday of my system on DCS in VR (7950X3D with BIOS set to prefer cache).

    CPU Usage.png

1)also running a 7950x3d and I was about to mention the solution of setting the bios to cache (have never been able to get the other solution involving the game bar and optimizer to work!) - surprised this one is not working and it worked well for me on MSFS and some other games........

2)also when I tried to run the the MT.exe I get an almost immediate crash - is there any way to fix this? (note am running the SMT disabled)

  10. On 5/29/2023 at 1:07 AM, chev255 said:

I would say 7800X3D is probably the most sensible option. But the 7950X3D allows you to run all other processes (voice attack, kneeboard, varjo base, etc.) on threads 16-31 which should also help with performance. So it all depends how much of a big deal is it for you to spend the extra $250

reading the thread with interest (just building a new PC for MSFS and DCS).

1)will go with the 4090 (as a fly 2d and VR) but just wondering is there any consensus regarding whether the AMD  7800 or 7950 is better for DCS/MSFS? (not don't mind paying the extra if it will give me better performance across both sims)

2)also assuming the issue with the Asus motherboards and AMD CPU's has now been resolved with a firmware update - or is it still worth considering an intel?

3)Had big issues getting the new MT to work with my olf i76700 assume it will run equally as well in MT with either the 7950 and 7800?

If you ran the update without disabling mods that are installed to the main DCS directory, this will pretty much always break those mods.  Recommend running a repair, and then re-installing your mods.  Best practice is to use a mod manager like OVGME, or JSGME, this way before you update DCS, you can uninstall your mods with a few clicks, then re-install after running the update.  This keeps your install clean, and is the best chance of everything working once your done updating/installing.

Caveat is, if you have mods that install to the 'Saved Games' DCS folder, then you don't have to worry about uninstalling them.  I still use OVGME for those mods, as it's easier to uninstall them if you find an issue during play.

    thanks was unaware!

1)I believe the echo sound mods are in the saved games folder so will leave them......

2)so for the repair which one do you recommend is this the full slow one or something else? (assume this would detect the sound mods and also might require them to moved) - should I try first just a reinstall of the super hornet mod or is this unlikely to work?

3)not familiar with OVG or JSG - which one would you recommend and is easiest to use? (really just have the super hornet, sounds and some skins)

  12. just ran the update for normandy 2.0 and as a result my super hornet is broken(although did back up all the old legacy hornet folders) so just wondering:

1)to fix it do I just need to "reinstall" the x2 mod and core mod folders? (overwriting any files)

2)know its the wrong thread but also have the echo19 super hornet sound mod installed - will this still work correctly or need a reinstall?

3)for future DCS updates will I just need to manually reinstall the super hornet mod files or is there another fix?

Is there maybe any rules you need to accept? Check again, you should be able to chat over there. Would be easier honestly.

Besides that, some export scripts might take so much CPU that they lock the FPS or make it look like that. Check that you can get into discord and ping me in the help channel. Then we'll analyse your log and system.

thanks managed to get the discord working now - what channel are you on?

also in terms of the locked fps strangely its now unlocked itself but the stutter has returned (although less than before) - as I mentioned the only thing I (knowingly) changed was the threaded optimization (which initially seemed to cure the stutter)

Overlay can be activated in the GForce Experience Overlay. You usually get that with pressing ALT+Z (might be Y depending on the language of your keyboard).

And there are some things that can limit FPS. Disable any VSYNC in DCS and the Nvidia control panel, make sure you didn't limit the FPS in the control panel.

If unsure, send your settings. I'm more responsive in discord, if you get to the help channel btw

its strange the only settings I have changed when it seemed to be running uncapped (with stutters) is the thread optimization (this caused the stutters to vanish) and max frame rate (to 1000) strangely when I did this there was some kind of projected frames that was hitting 1000 but the top box was rock solid at 32! (have now disabled max frame rate) - weird thing is that it does not feel like 32 fps(but very smooth).

1)is there any way to confirm the MT is actually working?

2)will try the nvidia fps counter see if it also says 32? (should fraps also work?)

3)are there any in game settings that might cause the fps lock at 32? (I never use vsync)

also just tried to join the DCS discord channel and can not seem to post or view anything on any of the channels (all greyed out) - can I have instructions on

how to use the "help room" please?

I didn't see instructions on installing liveries for this awesome mod...any help there? tks

    edit

must be this: The plane mod goes to main dcsbeta folder, liveries goes to saved games. There should be liveries/ea-18g, fa-18e and fa-18f folders for every actual airframe livery.

the above is correct (although I think you can also put them into the main install folder) - while most of mine now work I had a few (VFA102 for example) where many of the planes appear with the front 1/2 in black not sure if this is a bug or due to different versions of DCS being used.....

  16. 2 hours ago, Special K said:

That 1401 is definitely a miscalculation somewhere. If it displays 32 as your FPS then your FPS are at 32. You can use the Nvidia overlay, if you don't trust the ingame display.

its very strange as the 32 fps at the top (assume this is the current fps) looks like its fixed (almost as if there is a vsync on that locks your fps to 32!)

1)is there any setting that might cause this behaviour? (strangely with the thread optimization off the fps jumps around 60-70 but its a complete stutter fest).

2)where can I enable the nvidia fps overlay and will give it a try? (assume fraps will not work).

(edit this is all in 2d)

I had same issue, but it seems to be resolved for me.

I enabled thread optimalization, and set MAX FRAME to  1000 .

Now, higher fps at high preset. averaging 60 fps on free flight syria with the f16,where as I was locked prior at 45 fps.

No more cpu bound in red, instead gpu bound in green which makes more sense.

    i9-9900K , 2070 Super 8 gb, 64 gb ram, 2x1tb nvme

so (testing in 2d first) had a stutter fest and run the slow repair (no difference)

but in my nvidia control pane if I set my max frame rate to 1000fps and enable threaded optimisation seems to help and removes the

stutter - however strangely using the fps counter (ctrl+pause) at the top (in blue) it shows fps now as almost locked at 32 and T as zero and below

its say gpu bound with a "theor FPS of 1410"! - whats going on and what is my real FPS (it certainly does not feel like 32?)

    Just some ideas:

    - Make sure that HT/SMT is enabled (I see it is for you guys, but it should be checked, as we told a lot of people to disable it in the past as it was better back then).
    - If you see a lock at 60, that sounds like there is VSYNC active somewhere.
    - Make sure you deleted Saved Games\DCS(.openbeta)\fxo and metashaders2.
    - If no joy, try deleteing %LOCALAPPDATA%\TEMP\DCS.openbeta (or DCS for you steam users).
    - Check Saved Gamed\DCS(.openbeta)\Scripts\Exports.lua. I've seen winwing doubling and trippling their exports in there. If unsure, just rename the file to Exports.old and see if your issues vanish. Then we can work from there.
    - Disable Windows Game Mode.
    - In your Nvidia control panel:
       - Make sure that Threaded Optimization is turned on (not auto) for your DCS World profile. We've seen some suspects that auto is not fully working.
       - Enable the performance settings on the Power saving and Texture Quality values.
       - Set low latency mode to Ultra.

so (testing in 2d first) had a stutter fest and run the slow repair (no difference)

but in my nvidia control pane if I set my max frame rate to 1000fps and enable threaded optimisation seems to help and removes the

stutter - however strangely using the fps counter (ctrl+pause) at the top (in blue) it shows fps now as almost locked at 32 and T as zero and below

thanks - actually did all that and the MT still does not work for me (message regarding CPU bound appears) have a i7 6700 and it seems some different CPU's will not work with the MT - there is already a thread on it

The files are overwritten by modified versions that contain additional information/functions for the three Super Hornet variants. The information/functions for the Legacy Hornet remain untouched.

So, you can use Super Hornet and Legacy Hornet at the same time and also the slot for the Legacy Hornet in the Mission Editor isn't changed anymore, so Legacy Hornet missions are working as intended without modifications.

thanks for the confirmation will give it a try then!

also in terms of using the super hornet do you have to build a mission using the planner or are there any SP missions(like instant action) that come with the pack?

Maybe before really uninstalling, just try deactive them im first place. Go to your Saved Games folder of windows (not the installation of DCS) It should be something like this: C:\Users\<user>\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta (the <user> depends on you windows user name) and rename the "Scripts" folder to something else.

If it is still slow, and you did the steps from bignewy, please post your Log file. In the folder above you will also find the "Logs" directory, please upload your Logs\dcs.log file here, after having a slow DCS session. If you have questions about the listed steps, tell us.

Please also post your system specs, so we get an idea of your hardware.

Just for being sure that we talk about the same: The single threaded DCS mode works still fine, only MT makes problems?

ok i now get what you mean - have found in my saved games folder (not install folder) I have the scripts folder (this seems to be virtually empty?) and also I have a mods folder (with my echo19 sound mod and some aircraft) - are you suggesting to disable the mods I just need to rename the "scripts" folder and I can just leave the "mods" folder unchanged to disable the mods and then I can just run the repair?

  22. 6 hours ago, BIGNEWY said:

remove all unofficial mods, (depending on the mod it should have install / uninstall instructions)

close down all back ground tasks or programs you do not need to have running

ensure windows and all drivers are up to date.

run a slow repair or verify if steam

if you have 32gb RAM or less ensure you have your pagefile set correctly and on a fast SSD

disable hotplug in DCS controls page

you can enable the FPS counter with RCtrl + pause break

If you overclock consider it maybe to much and try default values

thanks will give it a try (starting with the slow clean up)

    assume you mean this?

also for the mods only really one I have is the core sound mod - could this really be causing the conflict? (also will check how to install but is there a folder where these mods

sit so I can check if I might have installed anything else?)

will try the clean up first - yes non MT works fine MT is a complete stutter fest and unplayable......
