Hi, I have spent lots of time reading through the posts regarding autopilot and while i admit I have not fully grasped all the sublties, I have deduced the following from the threads: If Heading hold is not disengaged, the helo will try and return to that heading after you input change of direction. I find the helo much easier to control with just the pitch and bank buttons on. What would cause the symptoms described? This is where I am confused, as having heading hold on or route mode on would cause this surely? I am sure neither of these were in operation. Does anyone have the definitive on exactly how best to use the auto pilot system? MY understanding from the post by Ivan and the subsequent replies is that there are many interpretations of how best to use and which combination of buttons on and off to use, depending on what you doing. Some replies and opinions seem to be in direct opposite to others. It is still very confusing. I have been experimenting , not using route mode yet, as i am working up to that, but just trying to find the best way to fly the helo in basic flight and manouvres, without crashing and found it is easiest with just pitch and bank hold on. Cant make up my mind wether adding flight director as well helps at all. But I still struggle with the rudders, even in the settings above, the helo often seeems to want to return to the heading it was on. Why is that?

I was just flying a mission, when I experienced a strange occurance. I stopped to go auto hover, I had just pitch and bank hold engaged, and alt hold came on as I engaged auto hover. As I tried to adjust the horizontal atitude of the helo, it became increasingly difficult to control, wanting to turn back in the direction I had just came from.. i had to use full rudder to stop it, then it started going in the opposite direction, until I was just spinning back and forth as i wrestled with the ruddr. The rudder was not trimmed as I had reset it and eventually my wingman crashed into me as he tried to follow my manouvres. It was as if the helo was trying to follow another direction, but auto headinhg hold was definitely off. Prior to this happening, I had turned on auto turn to target , while i engaged my helmet sight, but befoore i could lock anything, this started happening and I turned it off again. Does anyone have any ideas what was going on? thanks, Mark

just started the campaign and noticed it says it is not suitable for Vista. Is this the case and if so, are there any alternatives? cheers, Mark

Blades clashing ( Again, but different reason)
mrtube replied to mrtube's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Hi guys, just re flew the mission, managed a 45 minute flight with no incident, apart from when I landed, which was not too tidy, no crashes! I kept the speed between 200 & 250, and was very gentle. Seemed to work, thx -
Blades clashing ( Again, but different reason)

thx guys, but my problem is I was not doing either of those things as far as I can remember. And as I said, had no warning lights first, I will try some more flying and note carefully the speed, perhaps see if I can post a link to a track, any other ideas please feel free to help.. thx, Mark -
Hi Dudes, wonder if you can give me some help again. Been doing lots of practising, getting to know how to fly and use the autopilot system, trim etc, and am getting it slowly.. However, i am being plagued by sudden snapping of the rotors. In a previous thread, I was given some great advice as to how avoid this, in particular, paying attention to the red and yellow warning lights ( yellow, reduce collective, Red, pitch nose up ) This works great. However, I keep getting the blades snapping in what seems like perfectly normal flight, not manouvering hard, usually in a straight line, with no prior warning lights. after a very minor input. Sometimes, but not usually, one or other of the engine limiter lights may come on - what causes this ? I am also being pretty subtle with my control inputs, so dont think its me being hamfisted. Any advice would be gratefully received as its driviing me nuts!! Thanks, Mark

do you turnthe flight director on and turn off the other buttons to achieve this Jack? Or just turn flight director on in addition to them, like a kind of override? Mark

thanks dude, figured it out, what a cool piece of kit that is!!! cheers, Mark

Hi Dudes, just got the above new toy, got myself the profile by using the update game option in the software, and set black shark to combat flight. How do you tinker withthe deadzones etc, as I would like there to be some small head movement allowed before it translates to movement on screen. Is this done in game through the controller options ? thanks in advance..., Mark

Hey thanks guys, the circle in the circle thing seems to be where i screwed up, wil try this tomorrow and let you know. thanks again, Mark

I just tried again, and this time, I managed to get off 2 missiles, but could not get it to repeat. One went off as i was just pushing the launch button in frustration, i saw the C flash up, but then i could not replicate that. Then a few minutes later after some more fiddling around, I got another one off. The cannon seemed to work however, but i could only get those 2 missiles off, after that no luck. Here is the link to that mission track.... http://www.2shared.com/file/4936572/3de75af0/lock_problem_2.html

heres the link Viper dude.... http://www.2shared.com/file/4936387/ce98ce02/lock_problem.html cheers PS, thats a nifty usefull little utility!!

OK, I have flown the mission, I did seem to be able to lock the target with the cannon, you will see after I tried the ATGM's and had no luck, it worked with the cannon. Now, how do I get the track file so you can look at it? Its on my desktop at the moment....
-
Hi rapid, lobo, i did select the hardpoint, the green light came up over the outer hard point with the ATGM's. I held the button down for a long time, believe me! Had not tried to fire the cannon, as I was in auto mode and thought you had to have it locked to engage. Viper,I am just going to fly the mission again and will save a track for you kind fellas to look at. Promise you wont laugh too much at my clumsy flying!....

Hi Guys, yes , i have turned the weapon arm on. How do you record a track? Viper, i tried using the cougar and the keyboard.
-
Hi people, been practicing, now i can just about fly and trim the beast without crashing too often, decided i would try and learn weapons employment. However, despite having watched the producers notes and the training missions, i cannot seem to get the lock on the target. i have the master arm on, Laser on, turn on target on, designate with the HMS, find the target, get the gate on it, adjust the size, select the weapon, but when I press the enter button, or S1 on my cougar, ( using the viper profile), it will not lock, i dont get the C symbol and my weapons wont release. I have been trying to get this working all day and am running out of ideas. What am i missing here? What would cause all the above to be functioning exactly as it appears to inthe tutorial, save it wont lock when i press the button? In frustration, mark

Thanks guys, have just found some good answers in another thread as well, will go try out, cheers

Hi Fellas, been practising ( without great success, i might add!) my basic flying and manouvering and am being plagued by crashes which i cannot explain the cause of. I know you have already explained how easy it is to smash the rotors together by banking right too quickly, but this often happens with very little control input from me and often just pitching up or down a small amount. Any ideas as to the cause ( apart from hamfisted idiot at the controls!!) Also, i often get the yellow warning light and the red warning lights, (IAS?) Prior to a crash, What does this signify and what am I doing to cause this? Cheers, Mark

Cool, thanks for all the help, i will read assimilate and try it all out, thanks again, Mark

I have been following with interest the various threads relating to trimming and autopilot while i try and figure out how to fly and trim this beast correctly. However, despite all my reading up, I am still not sure what is the best way or combination to use the auopilot and flight director. do you: Use just the 3 auto pilot buttons switched on on their own? If so, what effect/function does this have (apart from the obvious heading pitch and altitude hold). Do they work indepentanly of the FD button? Use just the FD button, with none of the other 3 turned on? If so, what effect does this have? Or can you use some combination of the above, and again, if so, what are the effects and relative merits of these? What is the consensus on trimming? should it be done after every manouvre or avoided unless necessary? What will happen if you dont trim? And what is the effect of trimming with the autopilot or flight director on? Is it better to try and learn to fly first with or without the autopilot? (and or flight director? ) Sorry for all the questions, but i am having trouble figuring this out by trial and error, I just seem to get into situations that i cannot understand the reasons for, which makes it difficult to learn from. To learn from a mistake, you need to understand exactly what your mistake is!! Thanks, Mark

Hello again guys, wonder if anuone can give me a quick insight as to why I am experiencing the above problem. I am using a cougar hotas and after a short while in flight, I have to start applying left pressure on the joystick to correct a tendency to bank to the right. I have tried trimming ( but am very much learning this at the moment and in all probability am not doing correctly) I have flight direction turned on and also using the right control / enter to show the axix of my controls on the screen. Another problem I have come across quite often is the rotors snapping suddenly and crashing, usually preceeded by a flashing button on the left of the front panel. Any ideas ? I can see that learning to fly this helo is going to be a long road.... most of it spent here in the forum!!! cheers, Mark
