  1. This has been a revelation of knowledge. Than you everyone. Sledge
  2. Ah ha I see. One for FS2020 then by the sound of it. Thanks David Sledge
  3. AHHHHH! Ok I get you. No, it was never armed; all safe from the start of the mission. I now know what it is; there are two things going on here. By coincidence I was opening the valve at the same time as hitting the wake, which I didn't even know was a thing. Never heard of it, and I didn't know it was an option to turn on or off. I'm sure one can avoid it - in fact I think I can see from diagrams that approaching from the correct angle achieves this - but I'm going to turn it off for now; don't nobody need that sh** as a novice:D It's tempting to try it with something more stable but I'll stick with the A-10C for now. None of the tutorial videos I saw was recorded after wake turbulence was introduced, so they need updating. Thanks for the input. Sledge
  4. Hello all, Checking in - one month fly-by and a few home truths. I am enjoying learning the A-10C and its systems. I haven't joined any MP servers yet; I just don't think I'm good enough but I am improving. Looking back to just a month ago, I know now that I set my sights too high for how fast competency can be achieved. In fact, setting any target has proved problematic because, well, just being able to 'do' something, doesn't mean you can do it competently or well. I've learned that this is important and my own analogy is that it's like learning another language: you can learn the words, but if you don't understand the grammar and the structure you'll never be fluent. Fluency can be achieved in many, MANY years of practice and immersion or much faster through a thorough grounding in the mechanics of language in general and the specific language, in particular. Likewise, here I have learned a little and moved on. For example, I was able to fly level for a while and turn and moved on; I did a few circuits and moved on. The fact that I wasn't nailing speed and altitude in turns didn't seem to be a showstopper; the fact that I never came out of base leg lined up (or even close) didn't matter because I could always get down. Unfortunately, a little further down the track, I find that my skills aren't anywhere near good enough to do what I now want to do, like formation flying and AAR. I don't MIND that this is the case, but I now KNOW it to be the case and I'm glad it's only one month in and I can plan a route forward. For me, that's going to be going back to the basics and really getting the grammar and structure of flight right! For sure I'll still be learning the A-10C and its systems but I'm going to go back and learn to fly the L39 or C101 until I understand it. Cheers for all the advice here and elsewhere! Sledge x
  5. Nah everything was safe. I haven't done much weaponising anyway but trying not to shoot anything now until I can do this Do you mean AP/Autopilot? I can't think that opening the fuel valve would do that (PAC)...but if it does...wtf...why? Anyway it's moot because PAC wouldn't be engaged unless I pull the trigger stage 1?? Sledge
  6. Ok I seem to have hit a wall. Although not perfect my approach to pre-contact is def improving, so my join up is getting better. BUT...as soon as I open the fuel valve the A-10 goes into what I can only describe as stall/spin. I am trimmed ok with some stick pressures to maintain and get to pre-contact, but as soon as I open the valve - BOOM. All over the place. Am I doing something obviously wrong? Sledge
  7. Hello all, Thank you for the thoughts and ideas. It's improving. I think the switch to vanilla Warthog has made a positive difference; the trim doesn't feel so harsh...but I'm also aware that this may be me improving finer control a little. Not there yet. Going to make some basic formation missions as well as keeping up circuits and bumps and head-butting tankers. Sledge
  8. Hello all, Couldn't find the perfect spot but this looks about right. Anyone got experience of or comments regarding the use of Navigraph with sims in general and DCS World, in particular? Looks very interesting for immersion. Sledge
  9. Hey Bob, I'm hoping that if I can crack it in the A-10C I'll be able to do it in anything. That's in the future though. For the moment I believe I have been christened 'TankerKiller' by the AI. Onwards (..and less downwards with the flaming jetfuel). Sledge :joystick:
  10. Hello all, Thank you for the continuing input. This is all VERY useful stuff and I am certainly going to try reverting to the vanilla Warthog settings and change up/down the curves etc. The change to non-modifier trimming will help, although I still have a lot of 'feel' to develop. I've decided that, until I can AAR in the A-10C...well, I've decided to AAR until I can actually do it. Watch this space! Sledge
  11. LOL @deadpool Yup, that's just about right! Seriously though, it's all about trim: I get that. I'm flying the A-10C (I know, maybe not the best to start with but I'm trying to stick with it|) and I just can't get it trimmed for level flight, and I'm trying every time I go up to do it. But in the end I give up and auto-pilot just to get a break and get on with a mission or something else. I can SORT of get it trimmed for pitch by balancing the throttle but the roll is never right. In any case the inputs - even the slightest flick on the stick or tap on the keyboard - seem to be enough to start the ball rolling the other way; I would love to know how to set the keyboard and stick sensitivities to match what you guys do. I just KNOW I can get on faster if I could decrease or fine tune the sensitivity of the stick trim, in particular. I'm willing to do what it takes - I know I'm still very green - and I'm improving but this one is beating me at the moment. I have TM Warthog Stick and Throttles and TM rudder pedals. I use the NoID A-10C profile - amended slightly for my button taste. Trim is RCTRL+ , . / ; or HOTAS stick Pinky switch + coolie u d l r Sledge.
  12. Anyone that can do it should be burned as a witch! That is all! Have a nice day :)
  13. Hello all! Snap view zooms in a little too far on avionics panels, for my liking. For example when snapping to the CDU or MFCDs some of the relevant clickables are not visible. Is there a way to adjust the zoom level in a config file or smth? Cheers, Sledge
  14. Great contributions. Many thanks, both. Was able to do a hud-off/mfcds-off smooth night landing last night so progress made thanks to the comments here. On with the practice! My plan is to start with weapons in February as long as I can get the basics and the bird up and down safely at all times by then! Sledge
  15. Totally on board with all the above, thank you. Regarding the inclusion of 'bad' weather and blackout conditions for initial ILS training; I have to say I thought it was a bloody difficult place to start, like so much of the 'Basic' Flight Training Qualification DLC campaign. This one, in particular, doesn't feel very much like a basic piece of training or practice. I fought my way through the latter previous stages - I think more by luck than by judgement, tbh - but 09 ILS Approach and Landing is beyond this n00b atm. I will step back and start on some daylight/fair winds scenarios. Also, are there any good tutorials/documents out there for wind-affected navigation and cross-wind landings and take-offs? Finally, drawing back to my original question, am I right to assume, then, that the 'disappearing ladder' is the feature rather than the showstopper it was appearing to be? Cheers, Sledge
  16. Hello all! Life was good and I was progressing ok, in my own mind. Then I hit two bumps in the roadmap which have knocked me somewhat and I need some advice/guidance. Bump 1: I pull a turn of nearing 3G and the HUD ladder disappears the opposite way of the turn. Oh my! Am I climbing, diving or keeping a level turn?? Bump 2: Going through my first ILS tutorial the conditions are rain, wind, night. The HUD ladder is almost off the HUD to start with and pretty much any turn loses the ladder and I disorientate VERY quickly to the extent I almost can't even get to the first waypoint to find my instructor. Now, I've read about a hundred posts on the fact that e.g. advanced movement, uncoordinated flight and crosswind will cause this as the ladder position is orientated to the TVV (I hope I am summarising correctly 'cos I kind of get that!). My question is...how to deal with it? Is it just a case of learn how to use the backup instruments to keep track of orientation and situation/attitude? Just learn to live with the fact that the ladder will disappear; sometimes for considerable times? Is this just the pain of learning to fly?? Or am I missing some simple mitigations...or maybe both? Confused. Sledge :pilotfly:
  17. Choice is made - A-10C This is going to be something of an homage; first to ED for what they have made here, but then to everyone who's been here for years and their knowledge & contributions and then to the guys who helped me directly in my first week. Thank you. Today I got a Q (not Q-) across the board for A-10C Basic Flight Qualification 03 - Flying a Traffic Pattern. This is the day 'I got it'. Wow! All (well, not 'all') the struggles I had in the last few days disappeared. There was muscle memory and touch and feel and comfort and...basically...yeah I know how to do this. Most of all it was a HUGE smile and feeling of satisfaction that I haven't known in 30+ years of gaming. There are REAL achievements in these milestones. Game on. Thanks everyone! Sledge
  18. Good question...and I don't know the answer, really. Jet-age, though. Sledge
  19. Hello all! HNY! I'm thinking about conforming to a common addage that one should have at least one model from each of the eras represented in DCS 2.5+ I know nothing about these craft or their strengths and weaknesses; which one model would you recommend as the best of the era, in DCS terms, and why. Thank you! Sledge
  20. Hi Madog - would very much like to do this. Is it simple to achieve? I use T.A.R.G.E.T with NoID's A-10C profile. Sledge
  21. As this is the first model I have attempted, it’s great to hear that it’s not necessarily my heavy handed/footedness that’s causing trimming and manoeuvring problems! Thank you for the discussion and info. Sledge
  22. I was puzzled by this in my first attempt to make a cold and dark mission in the cold and dark. For me: press and hold ‘L’ dim lights come on after a few seconds and there is a distinct click as panel lights come on. Release ‘L’ after the click. Then there is plenty of light to flick the floodlight switch if needed. Sledge
  23. Hi Dave! Fellow newbie A-10C killer here. Welcome to the learn-churn! Sledge
  24. Well...that was some Sunday. First part: setting up the HOTAS and pedals and getting everything to work with TrackIR and Target/profiles. I think the moral of all the stories therein is: RTFM and look at what's been posted about the subject especially recently/currently. Anyway, all good! Second part: trying to fly. Ok, I was accurate in that I was right this wasn't going to be easy. I very quickly decided I would have to focus all my efforts on a) learning to fly and b) very few - if more than one - model. Much though I enjoyed watching the rotor spin off through the fields. By itself. I decided to park the chopper for a while. So... The A-10C it is. It's not easy, is it? But I am immersed and committed. I bought the training campaigns and found, fast, that they are VERY difficult. So I'm practicing and re-practicing the Learning missions, as well as setting up my own fast missions to practice specific stuff. I'm loving it and quite proud that I have yet to fire or drop anything (intentionally), and will try not to do so until I'm confident I can get up, somewhere, back and down safely with confidence. The bangs can wait a while. Watch this space! Thanks to all who replied and helped make this a fun start to the sortie. Sledge x
