Thanks Tailhook, I understand it now. Had a test run in the Hoggit Training Server and it seemed to work.

Ah ok. I could be switching between the two versions multiple times a day (due to different servers being on different branches), so I guess it's best if I keep the two versions installed in full.

I have both the Open Beta and Regular versions of DCS installed on my computer, each taking up about 107GB, 214GB in total. That's almost half my HDD space used up. I'm wondering if this is the most efficient way of having both versions on my computer at once? I'm reading up about how to use SkateZilla's utility, and this post seems to indicate that with SkateZilla's utility you only need one version installed but can somehow "switch" to the other version with ease. I'm confused how this would work. Wouldn't you need both versions installed like I have done?

Wondering if anyone here has successfully used Simple Radio Standalone with the F-5 on a multiplayer server? I've just installed SRS since I want to get into multiplayer. I just had a look at the Hoggit Training Server which people seem to recommend, and see there are two main frequencies we need to transmit and receive on - one for ATC and one for 'common' (guessing this is just people talking random). However, I'm still not confident I understand the F-5's radio setup and how this works in relation to SRS. Is it possible to be listening to two (or more) frequencies at once in the F-5? The SRS setup YouTube tutorial I watched had us set up two push-to-talk radio buttons which I've mapped to two different buttons on my throttle. When going into the training server, I expected to be able to hold down one button and speak to ATC, and hold down the other button and speak to other pilots but I couldn't work out where to program the second frequency on the radio panel. How do we manage it if we can't listen to two frequencies at once? Do we punch in the ATC freq on takeoff, then change the freq to the common one during flight, then back to ATC for landing? Thanks

If you don't mind me asking, to what extent is the F-18 buggy or incomplete? (I just bought it and hope to start learning it soon)

Not sure if this post goes here or into the F-5E forum, but a quick one about the AWACS Hunt mission that comes with the F-5E. What are you supposed to do if one of the other planes in your flight beats you to the front of the queue at the runway? This happened to me the other day when I was granted permission to taxi, but I was a bit slow leaving my hanger so by the time I got to the runway one of the planes in my flight was in front. Nothing happened for a few minutes so I received approval to take off and had to manoeuvre around him - I'm sure that's a big no no but there was nothing else I could do. Not my video, but you can see in Dodge 12 and the others start rolling as soon as Dodge 11 gets permission to take off. If the pilot in Dodge 11 hadn't started rolling right away then Dodge 12 would have whizzed past. Are you supposed to coordinate taxiing with your wingmen so you get to the runway in the right order?

Hmm, interesting. I thought it was weird. Also might have to play around with the RWR some more, didn't realise it had a 'search' mode. Thanks everyone.

Follow-up question to this, I did the AWACS Hunt mission that comes with the module. I flew up with my flight of F-5Es, plus some other flights in the air at the same time. As we were flying towards the mission area, one of my wingmen who was alongside me said 'CONTACT BEARING 328 FOR 80'. My read of this is that he was telling us that he picked up a contact at 328 degrees 80nm away. But how could he have done that if the F-5E radar has a max range of 40nm? Pretty sure it wasn't our AEW&CS either as he hadn't taken off at that point.

Thanks Ramsay, makes sense. I think I found the NASA report you're talking about too.

I've noticed that when I bring the radar elevation down below the horizon line all the ground reflections start showing up on the display. This makes it impossible to search and track aircraft that fly below the horizon (ie when I am flying high). How are we supposed to search without all that interferrence? Is there a way to filter out the ground reflections? Surely it can pick up the doppler effect of moving aircraft over the non-moving ground.

The framerate counter worked a couple of weeks ago, but recently I can't get it to display. I've played with a few settings in the mean time, but can't think of anything that might have disabled that function. I have tried everything to get it to display including changing the hot keys and mapping the function to a HOTAS button. Still nothing. I've searched the forums and can see that some people have experienced the same problem, but it doesn't seem like a overly prevalent problem. Also, I'm not using the Steam version so I can't use whatever Steam function there is to display FPS either. Any other suggestions?

I would be interested to know this as well. Until Bacab's post, I just assumed the units were in degrees. From the manual: "The indicator shows the value of the angle-of-attack in units from 0 to 30. Units are a corrected AOA value and differ from real AOA degrees." A Google search shows this is not the first time this question has been addressed:

Gave Just Dogfight a try for the first time today - got smashed in my little F-5E against the more advanced plane but had a blast! Thanks for the tip.

Pikey - is this the P-1289 you're taking about? I'd never heard about it until I read your post but I'm checking it out now. I see it's for a training varient of the Hawk, but I assume it's useful for all basic fighters?

Thanks for the tips everyone. I have the Fighter Combat: Tactics and Maneuvering as an ebook and I try to do lag and lead pursuits. Can't do pure pursuit to save my life since I can't keep my nose on the target for very long. Mr. Big.”Biggs”, thanks! I'll look into joining! What does everyone think of getting Tacview to evaluate flying patterns??

Hey everyone, any tips on getting better at one-on-one dogfighting? I've been doing the F-5E air-to-air training against another F-5, but I can never get the little ****. Starts off with him about 10 miles away and he heads towards me. I can't get a decent AIM-9 lock because he's coming at me. After that I try to chase him around, we go in circles and I lose energy like a fat man climbing stairs. I'll try to fire my AIM-9s at him but they eat his flares every time. After that all I've got left is the gun and I'm terrible shot. Nothing hits. At this point I'll either run out of fuel or he manages to maneouvre behind me and gets me with his gun. I've tried about ten times so far, and only once I've killed him - that was an accidental gun hit. - How do I get close enough to him to get a decent AIM-9 shot? - How do I get better at aiming the gun when I run out of missiles? - How do I escape him once we gets in a position behind me? Thanks!

Thanks for confirming, TLTeo.

Another random radar question, is there an auto elevate function for the radar, or do you have to manually adjust the radar's elevation all the time? I've got radar elevation mapped to a rotary on my throttle and it works quite well, it's just a bit cumbersome to have to manually move it up and down all the time to broaden the search. Also, how many sweeps should the radar make along a certain degree before moving it up and down? And how many degrees up/down should you move it each time if you want to perform good search of the area?
-
Thanks everyone, interesting learning this stuff. Hope you don't mind me posting more random questions about the F-5 here.

Thanks =JUICE=, I think it's an all-aspect missile (according to Wikipedia), but I might test it out on a head-to-head engagement. Yeah, so the concern is that even though the radar locks onto a bandit, if the missile does not speak to the FCS then it could be locked onto a friendly.

Hey everyone, I have some questions about the AIM-9P's acquisition. My understanding is the AIM-9P is not linked to the radar at all - so the AIM-9's tone you hear when it locks onto a target is coincidental to the radar lock (please correct me if I am wrong). What happens when there are two targets to the front of you more or less the same distance away? How do you know if the AIM-9P is looking at the same target that you've locked onto? Isn't there a 50-50 chance that the missile will go after the other target?

Hey I found it in Control Options under Axis Commands! This is a game changer, thanks heaps MAXsenna!!
-
Yes, I've been mapping it in the Logitech software. There doesn't seem to be any option to map rotaries in DCS Control Options, only buttons. Have you found a way to map rotaries within DCS??
-
Thanks mate. I've had lots of attempts and seem to be getting better. Concentrating more on AoA and the lights. At the moment I'm focusing on other functions of the plane such as radar and weapons, but I'll be back at landing practice soon enough.

Hello all. I have a Logitech X56 HOTAS which I am still trying to understand. I fly the F-5 and I'm just learning about the radar functions. I want to use one of the rotaries to control the radar tilt (RShift and [ or ]), preferably Rotary 2 where my thumb sits or Rotary 3 (one of the black dials). I can map it fine in the Logitech software using directional axis, but when I rotate the dial in game the maximum rotation CW or CCW does not match the F-5's maximums, so the radar elevation ends up all out of wack. It also lacks consitency in rotation, some rotations send the little marker (and consequently the radar tilt) upwards or downwards at much higher or lower degrees than others. Is there a way to ensure the maximum rotation of the dial in the CCW direction corresponds with maximum upwards tilt of the radar, and likewise maximum CW rotation corresponds with maximum downwards tilt of the radar? Thanks for your help.
