Should have known better than to get excited with such a small sampling. So far this morning--same mission, same technique--completely different result. No hits whatsoever. Oh well.

It's all about these:

Try the same but without chaff loaded on the F4s.

I just did.

Don't mean to revive a dead thread but I just ran the same mission 5 times, in which the F4 had no countermeasures.

4 times launched at max range and missile impacted. The time that it didn't impact the second one did launched just before the second post.

So I guess the chaff is just that good.

That's a good question - given the technology ERA it should be all HPRF all the way :). I don't know what the failure modes are - I know the F-15 will go to FLOOD if transfer to HPRF fails (ie. cannot maintain lock with HPRF - FLOOD is HPRF).

In game though none of this has any effect - locked on = locked on. :)

The FLOOD mode in game selects MPRF, which is wrong then.

Chaff shouldn't be that good.

Question for GG.

Locked on = locked on, so the only thing that can break a lock should be a notch? -or bandit going cold outside 20 nm.

Once STT is achieved the game doesn't take PRF or anything else into account anymore?

Lock can be broken for many reasons, in game those reasons are aspect (related to prf, not a factor inside 20nm or so), notch, and terrain. Blind speeds for some radar sets may also be modeled, but I forget.

Missiles can be seduced by any valid radar target in game, meaning chaff or another aircraft.

Reality is quite a bit more complicated.

Thanks you.

..and PRF for guidance of the sparrow still doesn't play any part i assume.

(just realized that this is not the right place for that. apologies.)

Side Q:

So a wingman flying between a attacker and a defender could drag a missile with him? Or just decoy with chaff if the defender is out?

It doesn't play part for anything in this Sim right now. Also not terribly important anyway, there are no mechanics to simulate things working differently.

And yes you are correct about the target switching.
