JayPee Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 To the painters and modders, I would like to experiment with drawing some opaque stuff on the glass of the canopy using Paint.NET/Photoshop crayon brush to simulate markings put on by the pilot. I was hoping to find a huge texture file containing the entire canopy but instead I only found a small template file containing the shaded side glass and the unshaded front window textures. Could you give me some pointers on where to look, using which programmes, etc.? i7 4790K: 4.8GHz, 1.328V (manual) MSI GTX 970: 1,504MHz core, 1.250V, 8GHz memory
JayPee Posted February 24, 2014 Author Posted February 24, 2014 (edited) Bump. I'm still hoping somebody can help me out with this... Here's an image of what I am trying to achieve. Edited February 24, 2014 by JayPee i7 4790K: 4.8GHz, 1.328V (manual) MSI GTX 970: 1,504MHz core, 1.250V, 8GHz memory
Lizzard Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 I remember back then in Lock on there was a mod with drawed Lines on the Canopy (for not getting confused while padlocking)..the altered Files were named A-10-PIT-REFLECT.tga. But no real clue about DCS My Specs: I don`t care..it is a Computer..a black one..
JayPee Posted February 24, 2014 Author Posted February 24, 2014 (edited) I'm Googling it as we speak.. Hopefully I can find some pointers there on how to pull off something similar. EDIT: I notice quite some mods altering cockpit textures but so far I haven't found the proper files for the 10C. diveplane Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 (edited) its just a texture ,so its easy enough . format is dxt3 dds if I remember. Oesau Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Tom_Weiss would know - he's done a number of mods to add lift lines to the canopies of DCS aircraft
JayPee Posted February 26, 2014 Author Posted February 26, 2014 (edited) Possible to draw on the A-10C canopy glass? Which programme(s) do I use to open that file? As is probably obivous, I've never done this before. EDIT: Nevermind, I think I've found a tutorial. Katanaa Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Drawing on the canopy even casts shadows inside the cockpit, something I found out when I splashed a bird onto the canopy :)
JayPee Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 Could you give me a quick rundown how you made that? I have trouble opening certain files.. i7 4790K: 4.8GHz, 1.328V (manual) MSI GTX 970: 1,504MHz core, 1.250V, 8GHz memory
Katanaa Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Easiest way to open the dds-files imo is to get the nvidia dds-plugin for photoshop. https://developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-texture-tools-adobe-photoshop The alpha-layer in the texturefile controls the transparency, where black is fully transparant. my A-10C-glass-REFLECT.dds looks like this for example. 1
JayPee Posted March 6, 2014 Author Posted March 6, 2014 Going to try that this weekend, thanks so far! i7 4790K: 4.8GHz, 1.328V (manual) MSI GTX 970: 1,504MHz core, 1.250V, 8GHz memory
Crashmo Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 dds file conversion Jay, I have used this program for over a year. It is very simple to set up and use. Just drag a bmp file into it and convert to a (save as) dds5 file. You can also take any .dds file and convert back to a bmp file to see it with a PC. http://www.mwgfx.co.uk/programs/dxtbmp.htm this is just one download site. The program is DXTBMP 16/32. I googled it and about 10 download sites came up.
JayPee Posted March 7, 2014 Author Posted March 7, 2014 Hey thanks man! i7 4790K: 4.8GHz, 1.328V (manual) MSI GTX 970: 1,504MHz core, 1.250V, 8GHz memory
diveplane Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Drawing on the canopy even casts shadows inside the cockpit, something I found out when I splashed a bird onto the canopy :) hope dcs dev team would add this effect in on bird strikes. https://www.youtube.com/user/diveplane11 DCS Audio Modding.
ENO Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 I keep reading the hog documentation about how they use their canopy to help stack and rack aircraft in the AFAC role and I wish there was a realistic and practical way to apply that. I don't expect it by any means- but between binoculars and the grease pencil I think we're missing a big part of hog culture. Hansolo Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Ability to select gyro stabilized binoculars similar to switching on NVG would be a nice feature Cheers Hans 132nd Virtual Wing homepage & 132nd Virtual Wing YouTube channel My DCS-BIOS sketches & Cockpit Album
