Lausbub78 Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 Hello all, I hope this is the correct part of the Forum to ask my Question. I plan on using 12mm PVC Sheet as base to mount my Chair and Rudderpedals on. My concern is that the PVC Sheet has a static charge,I noticed it when I cleaned the sheets with a cloth and got near the surface the hairs of my arm pointed up. I haven't thought about static charging when I decided for PVC. My Question to more experienced people on that matter is,should I better pick another material like wood as I fear to damage my Hardware, Flightcontrols,USB Ports etc. or shouldn't I worry too much. After all many of us use Carpets ,PVC Floors etc. which can aswell have some static charge. Thank you in advance.

Static electricity is a prime killer of PC equipment and it is quite insidious about it. You can fry equipment and it will continue to run for some time before it dies making troubleshooting the cause near impossible. Best idea is reduce static as much as you can. Try getting an anti-static chair mat instead. Similar look and feel with no static adn you can still mount your hardware to it... "Pride is a poor substitute for intelligence." RAMBO
Lausbub78 Posted March 19, 2014 Author Posted March 19, 2014 Thanks for the reply. Okay,so I'm better off to the drawing board again. Propably going for wood then just to be save, even if I'd rather use something else...wood looks so,hm,wooden.^^ Maybe I will paint it though. Or maybe I will have a look at those Chair mats.
hansangb Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 Couldn't you just stick a static discharge wrap on it? Also the chair mats are basically the same thing as PVC, methinks. hsb HW Spec in Spoiler --- i7-10700K Direct-To-Die/OC'ed to 5.1GHz, MSI Z490 MB, 32GB DDR4 3200MHz, EVGA 2080 Ti FTW3, NVMe+SSD, Win 10 x64 Pro, MFG, Warthog, TM MFDs, Komodo Huey set, Rverbe G1
metalnwood Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Lucky only the hairs on your arms stood up. I remember separating a couple sheets that were 1200x600 and then next second I touched something, wham! a lovely big bugger of a shock.
Lausbub78 Posted March 20, 2014 Author Posted March 20, 2014 Hehe I was really lucky there . Okay now I got 3 plates of wood in the same thickness. Didn't cost me anything, got it from where I work. Not really the material of my choice but I'm rather on the save side and I could still paint it. hansangb, good point with the discharge wrap though. Thanks again guys.
