Hello all

I have been playing DCS for a while now and I have been getting the hang of air to air combat recently against the computer. So I thought I might have a crack at an online games over today and tomorrow.

So my questions are:

1) What servers are recommended for a relatively new person with no human vs human air combat experience?

2) Are there any Australian servers I can join or do you have to be a more experienced pilot/regular and you need to join for them?

Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers

I say join any server, introduce yourself as new, and have fun. With that said, I find the <51> server, 104th, and S77TH.com servers to be good, friendly arenas. I can't speak for average pilot skill, but I definitely say join. If you happen to be taking a beating, either take a break for a bit, switch to a defensive posture escorting AWACS/tanker/CAS, or join the teamspeak and work with someone as a flight, which can be its own reward.

I am unsure of any australian servers, but know an australian player. If you have steam, I can inbox his steam profile to you and you can introduce yourself. If nothing else, the 2 of you could fly together in coop or something similar.

Thanks will have a look.

I forgot to ask, is having teamspeak or a mic important online or is it pretty easy to get by without one.

I ask because I don't have a mic (that i know of) and haven't really ever thought of getting one.

It helps for detailed communication. You can easily type things out to a whole team or server in your downtime when you don't need to do specific maneuvers or are engaged. However, say you and a wingman are dealing with 2 bandits. It becomes hard to type out your altitude and heading, whether you've fired a missile, etc. With that said, simply listening to another player on teamspeak makes you infinitely more aware than if you weren't in the loop at all. Obviously, you can get by simply using the mission briefing to get an idea of what to do and expect and just type out questions on specifics and hope for another typed out answer.

Despite all that I've said, actually using teamspeak with or without a mic is not necessary at all. It helps out ALOT, but is not needed.

You don't need to be more experienced to fly online. However, don't be surprised, if you're just getting killed left and right. More often than not you'll be fighting against people that have been here for years. Make learning the primary objective, get tacview to help yourself analyse what happened. TS helps a ton and there are a lot of nice people that can help you. Should definitely buy a mic.
