Ironhand Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Hello all. It's been awhile. The other day I updated DCS/FC3 to 1.2.8. It seems like it's been a year since I last used the sim but finally had a day where my time was my own and wanted to revisit. As usual, I jumped into my first love's pit (Su-27) first and took her for a SP test ride against an F-15. Over the coarse of a number of flights, the result was more or less what I'd expect. Using R-27ERs, it'd take 2-4 missiles for a kill. Curiously, I never got tagged. I used to be pretty good but I am now creaking with rust. Then I switched pits and took an F-15 up loaded with AIM-120s hunting Su-27s. It was taking up to 5 or 6 to make a kill, if at all. By then the fight was well within visual range. In fact, more often than not, I'd simply make the kill with an AIM-9. Then, this morning, quite by accident, I locked the target directly out of LRS rather than designating in TWS. The 2nd AIM-120 made the kill. The same held true over the course of a few more flights. I assume this is a known issue. Does anyone on the team know when this might be fixed? Kind of takes the joy out of driving an F-15. For now my solution is to load 2 AIM-120s to keep the AI honest and actually kill him with an AIM-7 or AIM-9. Scrim Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Weird, never had issues scoring kills or enough damage to force an RTB with first hits using -120s. Rarely have much issue scoring an ~1/0.8 shot/hit ratio.
DFA_Tomcat Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 (edited) Yeah, the AIM-120 is broken to hell. I don't know for sure, but the main consensus is that the AIM-120 actually decelerates during flight. I've just switched to the AIM-7. Edited July 17, 2014 by DFA_Tomcat
Ironhand Posted July 17, 2014 Author Posted July 17, 2014 (edited) Yeah, the AIM-120 is broken to hell. I don't know for sure, but the main consensus is that the AIM-120 actually decelerates during flight. I've just switched to the AIM-7. The only problem with that explanation is that it doesn't account for the striking difference I was seeing in launching out of TWS vs launching with a hard lock out of LRS like you would with an AIM-7. That's the part that has me curious. Weird, never had issues scoring kills or enough damage to force an RTB with first hits using -120s. Rarely have much issue scoring an ~1/0.8 shot/hit ratio. Is this with 1.2.8? Or a different version? Scrim Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 IIRC, yeah, it was 1.2.8. But I'll take a look in TacView (awesome purchase) based on Game_On's post, since I've not really looked at many DCS recordings in TacView. I've only played default missions with the F-15, and who knows, they might have an easy AI level or something.

FWIW, I have the AI set to excellent. Well, it's off to work. Fun's over for today.
