Avio Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Is it better to do pop-up attack directly or from an offset path? Offset pop-up seems to make better sense as it presents a crossing and moving target to any ground fire. But it also seems to create problem of stabilising the chopper when swooping down on final attack run. This is especially so in a Huey, unlike in a plane where it's all steady. Anyone has a good idea of how better to stabilise the Huey when coming out of a turn? Tried using rudders, but not easy preventing gunsight from rocking all over.

Or turn a tad bit earlier towards the target to have a few seconds more time. Or let the co-pilot do the dirty work with the miniguns - so you don't have to align exactly towards the target.
Xtrasensory Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Depends on the threat. When unmasked, I would want to fire asap and do the maneuvering masked. When I see the enemy, they can see me and I would like to shoot at that time.Only use the cyclic for corrections and keep the aircraft in trim. http://1stcavdiv.conceptbb.com/ 229th Air Cav, D Coy, Gunships
Thumper1606688436 Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 You shouldn't be making pop up attacks at all in the Huey as you are using unguided weapons. The best form of attack & defence in the Huey is speed, make your approach using any hills/mountains to mask your approach then swoop down on the target at maximum speed. Firing rockets first quickly followed by spraying the area with as much 20 mike mike as possible before egressing over the target allowing your door gunner(s) to have a go. By maintaining your speed you can quickly get out of range of AA before orbiting to make another pass.
SUBS17 Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 Never egress over a tgt otherwise you get shot down. Popup attacks are the recommended approach combined with terrain masking. [sIGPIC] [/sIGPIC]
