khessmd Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Hi there, I recently downloaded this game and bought some DLC for it but going through the training missions I am having a very hard time. I quickly realized that this game is no joke! The difficulty is way harder then any other flight sim i have tried in the past. I did ok until I got to the bomb drop training mission. You start out in the air and have to fly through several waypoints. If you miss even 1 of them, the tutorial stops dead in its tracks. I try to swing back around to try and go through the gate again to continue but the plane is so difficult to handle I have had to restart the mission about 10 times before I just couldn't take the frustration anymore. I usually end up crashing in an uncontrollable spin trying to get this plane full of bombs just to spin back around and climb to get back to the gate that i missed. I would really like to keep working at this game but I really need some tutorial help that doesn't just stop after you miss one gate. This plane is extremely difficult to fly for some reason. Can anyone point me to any articles or videos that people have done to help out new folks learn this steep learning curve game?
Vespa Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Which plane are you trying to learn and fly Khessmd?
Exorcet Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 What are you flying? You say you bought some modules. Are you training in them or in the Su-25T (the free plane)? There are many videos on Youtube. You might also consider joining a free flight server in multiplayer and asking for help, that might be a good environment to learn some flying skills. Pepec9124 Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Why does this sound like A-10C training ? That would be unfortunate. Su-25T is what you should be learning for a start. Do you have any stick ? As Exorced mentioned, MP is good idead if you don't know where to start. Search for VA. It has kind people most of the time.
CookPassBabtridge Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 (edited) Yeah A-10C training can break frequently if you miss waypoints. I found the TGP and maverick training did that a lot, you needed to be over the right bit of map for it to trigger (sort of fly past the X shaped range area with it to the left of your cockpit). Sadly the only thing you can do is start again, and this will probably happen a lot. The upside is you will learn everything much better due to the repetition. I am still very much a newb - new to simming in general as well as new to DCS. I am learning to fly before anything else and just trying to immerse myself in aviation and practicing. I have done all the A-10 training but still not taken her out for any missions beyond a quick setup in the mission generator to free practice startup, taxi, take off and landing. It also helped that I bought the TM HOTAS Warthog - nothing like a bit of investment to help motivate the learning curve! As others have said, make use of any resources you can find. You may be sad to hear that the manuals, IMO, are required reading. That said, there's stuff in there thats massively helpful and so often gives you a "OH SO THATS WHAT I WAS DOING WRONG" type moment. The A-10C one is about £15 for 660 pages, and apart from being printed in black and white on cheap paper is really good (unless you go for the £115 hardback colour version). It is a hugely steep learning curve though, and can at times be immensely frustrating. If you feel you just cannot get something, thats not you being crap, its the sim being extremely accurate! There are a load of training materials available in a sticky on this forum somewhere too, plus a training wiki. get yourself subscribed to some of the DCS squadron YouTube channels too :) I think the "try fail, look it up" method works well. As long as you ask questions of yourself to figure out what you did wrong, you keep moving forward. DCS is about incremental improvement, the satisfaction of doing it just that little bit better every time. Nate--IRL-- Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Also Consider adjusting the Joystick to be less sensitive. The Default is over sensitive IMO. See PG 27 to 29 of the DCS user manual (In the start Menu under Eagle Dynamics) I usually use settings of Deadzone 10 Curvature 30 For both the Pitch and roll on the Joystick. statrekmike Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 The training missions built into DCS are okay, some are better than others but I have always found that making your own training plans ends up helping a lot more in the long run. Look up the mission editor for DCS on youtube, just learn how to place down some units so that you can practice bombing them at your own pace and with whatever weapons you feel that you need to work on. The mission editor is probably the best training tool and just about anyone can quickly learn enough about it to make some basic training areas with assorted ground and air targets.
