I was wondering if the terrain feature in DCS; in which if you touch the forbidden grass you will be stuck in the "quick sand" indefinitely and/or damage your landing gear if you manage to make it back to the taxiway.

From my experience in DCS it seems to be one of the top things that annoys many players.

Yes, the solution may be "don't go in the grass", but I'm sure all of you, at some point, have made it back to base with a damaged aircraft, and for some reason slide off the side of the runway.

Some of us would like it if we can repair and be able to get the same airplane off the grass.

Or deadstick landings in open fields, where aircraft suddently blows up no matter how softly you touch down...

So...is there any plans to change that? So that other airplanes behave in the dirt and grass similarly to how the P-51 can?

From personal experience, aircraft will get stuck in the grass... actually it is stuck in the dirt as the grass doesn't do anything to hold a 25 ton jet up. We had a F/A-18 get stuck back in 2010 when the move director let one of the main mount tires go off the concrete while trying to position the jet at compass rose. It sank all the way to the axle lever in an instant and would have sank further if the axle lever had not been planted firmly on the concrete. The jet was pulled out the next day by the base crash crane. It happens so the trick is to be a better pilot and not allow yourself to make those mistakes... or fly the P-51 or similar low ground pressure aircraft that are designed for operations on unimproved strips.

Truly superior pilots are those that use their superior judgment to avoid those situations where they might have to use their superior skills.

If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

^ what he said.

It's actually very realistic. Lots of weight on a small surface area (the tire). Typically aircraft that are designed to land in austere environments have very large and underinflated tires. Or they have a large amount of tires to increase surface area. Same goes for landing in open fields. The smallest obstruction can cause really bad things to happen when trying to land on something other than an approved surface not to mention that the only fields that are plausible for a non-catostrophic event are the farmer's fields and even then it is no guarantee. I believe the standard procedure is to eject instead of crash land.

Also, make sure you crash land gear up if trying to. Gear down is guaranteed death...although you get points for the gymnastic display that will surely ensue. :)

And all that being said, I agree...it's annoying in game, but I still don't want it changed.

The other day....testing a mission where I was picking up troops in the Mi-8 about 30 yards from a creek. I landed a fair way from the water.....stuck, I sank in the grass and could not complete the mission because I was hopelessly stuck. I sank far enough to damage the AC. So annoying!

I've posted the video before but if you walk, having ejected, too close to a river you will sink completely out of sight.
