Hey,

if this topic is in the wrong category, pls move it dear Admin :)

To my question:

Has anybody with a decent machine ( minimum 4 cores ( no HT ), better 6 Core i7 with fast GHz )

ever tried to run two copies side by side to use 1 as the standard Client and 1 as the Server ?

I ask this because when I look at my own System I mostly play with I have found out that my FPS are WAY HIGHER when I play the same mission on my LAN with my other Office-PC as it's server. Despite it is only a Core2Duo 2.8GHz 8GB RAM machine it gives me that many more frames that make the difference. De facto I cannot play OFFLINE on that Macbook Pro as the CPU limits it. I guess when flying ONLINE some or most of the ground activities and such are nailed and calculated by the server ( correct me here if I misinterpret this ). Fact is, while playing online on 104th or on my LAN I do have better fps in general.

Now with CPU affinity as a tool to adjust things and looking at my Cores doing nothing I thought of playing DCS and hosting the server on one machine to offload the work from that 1 core to another core that is used by the 2nd DCS process.

My SSD is has just enough space left to place a 3rd copy of DCS on it and I will test later tonight, with SSD this copy and test thing should be quick but I wanted to know if others have done this or are actively using it for offloading to another core.

If that works, then my next one will be a new 6-Core CPU, if it doesn't and DCS stays for now where it is then a Devil's Canyon is on me shopping list, either way coupled with a MSI 970GTX G1 or G4, whichever I can get here. The 980 GTX is way too expensive, even tho I pay wholesale w/o tax etc.. rather 2 970's in SLI for a little more money than 1 980GTX, money wise seen.

Anyway, hope to get some input from you.

ahh...and yes, no VMware for this, that would work but the overhead would be too much and would require a license for VMware which most won't own I guess.

Regarding the server question, let's say you travel from Dusseldorf to Berlin and you take your 300lb mother in law with you. Whether you put her next to you in the car or in the trunk, you still have to carry her weight. What I'm saying is, if playing + running a server in one client on one machine gives you FPS drops, playing on one client and running a server on the other yet still on the same rig will get you the same FPS drops (give or take a few).

You actually already concluded that since the FPS drop is gone if you run the server locally on a different machine. At least, that's what I understand from you.

No quite what I wanted to say.

The reason why I want to try is this:

DCS uses only 2 cores, no matter how many you have, I have 4 cores + 4 HT-Cores.

When I play, my CPU usage is roughly 30-35% overall max. 1 Core is utilised all the way, 1 other core is about 30-50% up&down, all other cores are idling.

When you set AFFINITY in Task Manager you control what core can be used by a program.

The thing would be to tell DCS_Client to use Core 1 + 2 of 4, DCS-SRV to use Core 3 + 4 of 4.

I have 16GB of RAM and SSD, so that is no problem.

Now, if I am assuming right, the work for the server aka overall calculations and warfare will be OFFLOADED from Core 1 to Core 3 and thus Core 1 has more cycles to calculate that damn intensive PFM that shakes my machine into pieces when playing offline, Having 10-15 fps makes you think what you can achieve with what you have and what you know about it.

The actual question is, as I am confident the effect will be there, will it be enough to justify the overall higher workload on that machine as this may just eat up all or more that was tried to gain.

Only tests will tell if the gain is higher than the price to pay. This may shift dramatically if you have 3 or 4 channel memory support to the favour of this move. As faster memory will cure some of the overall higher workload on the RAM.

For sure, DISBALE 3D for the SRV.

If I am not totally wrong, afaik some FPS Games do exactly this to distribute load among cores.

Once DCS has it's own dedicated server, it is likely how it will be handled when you play OFFLINE missions. You will connect to your 127.0.0.1 loopback device. You will ALWAYS be connected to a server when you play, either locally on the same machine, in your LAN or WAN.

So if ED comes along with a ded. SRV module we also get some kind of SMP added, not the proper way but even better, we can completely offload just the SRV to a ded. 2nd machine.

I am just trying to grab ahead and do this now, all I need is a Mac Pro with enough cores and Quad Memory Architecture to boost it UP ;)

Anyone a Mac Pro or MS-Workstation with lots of Cores and Memory bandwidth ??

It is not said that DCS 2.0 will use a server-client setup for single player missions, not interface-wise, and not in the background either.

I know, but a DCS_SRV is said to come, sooner or later.

I am downloading the complete pack right now to find out what happens.

Does the license management prohibit me to launch it twice ? Can I launch them with different accounts as I have 2 accounts with licenses. I will see...

Yes it might come sooner or later, but that still doesn't mean that for SP the sim will run a server instance and a player instance combined. Generally only games running off a Quake, Unreal, etc. engine do that where their SP game mode is basically a server with 1 local client and the rest will be bots.

At least when I used to play the Battlefield series that's how DICE handled it as well for BF1942 and BF2, havent played 3 and 4 yet, that's off to my son

and his reflexes haha.

ED for sure knows about all those options when baking the server, I hope they opt for this method as workload can than be distributed without rewriting the whole thing for SMP, which would be cool to have but I doubt that that will take place in 1 big step, rather in portions.

I am 3/4 done with the DL but have to leave soon to fix a LAN...LoL

Will report tonight how this went on my Ultrabook. If it works here it will work anywhere with enough cores, RAM and SSD.

It won't work with 2 standard installations as you may choose another installation folder but DCS will use the existing folder in ".../Saved Games/DCS World. It will not create a new folder and thus you cannot start 1 with 3D and 1 without 3D windowed as a SRV.

Me idiot, I wiped the beta just before, reinstalling it now but somehow it wont do a local copy instead it downloads the full thing, over 14 GB.... may take a while.

As long as they are internally the same, it may work with connecting them in MP, if the versions differ already it wont I am afraid.

more later...

4.3 MB/sec God, I love this Cable ;)

I move soon, I can only hope I get the same speed and quality where I move to, I just cannot cope with a 2 Mbit line, heck, even 20Mbit is close to useless

if ya handle ISO's and large Service Packs....AND DCS !!!!

Move to where I live. 180Mbps for 30 bucks a month. Net effective data troughput 21.5MB/s, I'd say that's damn clean and lean connection!

They offer me 25Mbit for 44,95, 50Mbit for 49,95 and 100Mbit for 59,95.

the smaller 2 have 2Mbit UL, the 100Mbit line has 5Mbit and FastPath enabled.

I am damn tempted to get the big one. Kitchen Command has already said:"If it's important for the mission, GET IT" so I have green lights from there. Called them up today and asked them what they can actually deliver to the house as what they promise and what they deliver are two pairs of shoes. It may well be that only 5Mbit reach the house, it's god damn old style copper wires and DSL, no cable or Fiber Optics in sight for a LONG time there.

I now have cable here where I am and they also go up to 200Mbit/20Mbit as of last week for a fair price. What a pitty I sold that house now HAHA

Anyway, DL almost done and my appointment canceled so I have time...to walk to the gas station and buy the Mig-21..... that comes first.

My pressi to me for my 45. LoL a Mig-21Bis Software package is all I wanted for my 45th.....

I am that far.....ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Has anybody ever tried DCS + DCS_SRV on Multi-Core PC ?

You could try the following two things:

1. install the open beta and the "normal" release version. This works for sure, as i have both installations on my machine. Then use the dcs_updater.exe to update either the release installation to the beta or the other way around.

2. if you then still have the problem that both installations share the same folder in "saved games", you could just execute your server instance in another user context. E.g. Create a Windows user "DCS Server" and in the shortcut to the dcs.exe of your server installation, set it as the executing user. (At least, I would assume you can do that. Currently I can't check, as I'm on my way to the office. Another option would be to use a windows service wrapper, and assign the dedicated user to the windows service.)

Report back, if it worked!

Edit: sry, I misread your post... I thought it said "doesn't allow two installations". Using a second user context might also help with the instances though. Or you could always use a virtual machine ;-)

Regarding point 2.

If you, for some reason, want different DCS installations to use different Saved Games folders, you can do it with a txt file called dcs_variant.txt containing the text (i.e. v1211) that you want appended to the default Saved Game folder name (DCS). The example will produce a folder called 'DCS.v1211'

The file goes in the DCS World main installation folder.

Attached is my Saved Games folder on my flight sim machine.

EDIT: Btw, this is why the open beta has a separate Saved Games folder.

Aren't you running the risk of swapping better FPS for warping on your own machine ?

Interested to hear how it works out.

You can run a server on a crappy machine and have great results. I don't do that now but I started that way. I would not run both on one machine. I agree with JayPee but my mother-in-law is super hot.

:) I take it your wife never ever visits these forums ?

Cheers.
