ED Team Groove Posted April 6, 2006 Author ED Team Posted April 6, 2006 i wouldnt say better but littoral waters suits them more - i agree on this. a SSN which is cruising on 5 knots or less is as silent as a diesel boat. you cant go on a 6 months world cruise with a diesel boat without a big resupply operation on its tail. but you can go on for 6 months with a nuclear sub. ED Team Groove Posted April 6, 2006 Author ED Team Posted April 6, 2006 fas.org: The Russian fleet operates three variants of the Kilo 877: the basic 877; the 877K that has an improved fire-control system; and the 877M that has wire-guided torpedoes from two tubes. Export models, designated with an 'E' suffix, are generally similar though with some reduced features. Our Forum Rules: http://forums.eagle.ru/rules.php#en

My submarine knowledge is limited by a couple of classic films (like “hunt for red October” etc.) but how can it be that a diesel is more silent for sonar than a modern nuclear version? GGTharos Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 Because the nuke sub -cannot- turn off the cooling pumps for its reactor, much like the reactor itself cannot simply be shut off. Those pumps make noise. Similarely, it produces AC current with a 60Hz line, which causes sound of the same frequency and low-freq noise, like radio, propagates -far- and is potentnially the first freq line you will see on a Sonar, far before the others. A diesel sub can shut off /everything/ and run on battery (DC) power, making pretty much no noise whatsoever ... at least for a limited amount of time (they may have to restart water pumps and possibly air pumps eventually) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda

Doesnt work so well when sea critters attach themselves to the rubber and start chewing it away... ED Team Groove Posted April 6, 2006 Author ED Team Posted April 6, 2006 There's a big difference between 'reducing noise' and 'making no noise' ... making no noice isnt out there. okay when u shut all the stuff down. but when you do this the enemie knows where u did it and they also know you have to go up for fresh air for the diesel and all the disadvantages you have on such a sub. thats why usa is so hot on german fuel cell u-boot technology :) there is no difference under 5 kts between atomic and battery sub. But i know what you trying to say :D Our Forum Rules: http://forums.eagle.ru/rules.php#en
hitman Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 There's a big difference between 'reducing noise' and 'making no noise' ... this is true...but they still go hand in hand with stealthy characteristics. http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/ssn-688.htm Intel 13900k @ 5.8ghz | 64gb GSkill Trident Z | MSI z790 Meg ACE | Zotac RTX4090 | Asus 1000w psu | Slaw RX Viper 2 pedals | VPForce Rhino/VKB MCE Ultimate + STECS Mk2 MAX / Virpil MongoosT50+ MongoosT50CM | Virpil TCS+/ AH64D grip/custom AH64D TEDAC | Samsung Odyssey G9 + Odyssey Ark | Next Level Racing Flight Seat Pro | WinWing F-18 MIPS | No more VR for this pilot.
