terminator363 Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Hey guys I've been playing around with the MiG for a few days and I can't seem to get the nose cone to move back and forth with the throttle. Is this a bug? Happy Bug Hunting!
xxJohnxx Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 The nose cone is not only moved by throttle inputs. It is moved by current speed and altitude as well as other flight relevant parameters. Also it is dependend on other settings, such as if the gear is extended or not. On the left of the ASP gunsight there is an indicator showing the noscone position inpercent (0 to 100%, where 100% means fully extended). The indicator needle will move during the flight, giving you valuable information if the automatic system is still working properly. If it isn't you would have to reduce your speed, stop hard manuvering and take manual controll of the noscone. Then land ASAP. Stealth_HR Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 To check if the nosecone is moving, once you performed the start-up procedure on the ground, find the КОНУС switch on the left vertical panel in the cockpit and switch it off. You can then use the small rotary knob on the nosecone position indicator to manually set the cone position anywhere between fully retracted and fully extended. Also note that the with the earlier MiG-21 models the nosecone was much further in the intake, so if you're going by real-life photos, always compare with the bis model. terminator363 Posted January 10, 2015 Author Posted January 10, 2015 (edited) Ok I just tested it. Auto nose cone works for sure but manual nose cone doesn't seem to work. Is the solid white arrow supposed to follow the clear one the pilot manually sets? If so it's not working. Edit: Did some flying and noticed the nosecone only really moves when I'm moving the throttle, altitude and speed aside. I've noticed it usually stays at max 2 and usually 0 even with afterburner on. The only time it will extend is when I decrease the throttle rapidly - and that's only for a few seconds then it returns to 0. Is this correct? Manual nose cone still doesn't seem to work at all. The cone doesn't move around much at subsonic speeds. Once you go supersonic it will start to move forward as you accelerate, IIRC maxing out at somewhere near 40% at a speed of mach 2.1. This keeps the supersonic shockwave touching the inlet lip, which maximizes the compression of the air before it enters the engine and thus increases thrust. At subsonic speeds there is no shockwave and thus no reason for the cone to go forward (it might move around a bit to optimize airflow into the engine). The remainder of the movement range isn't used under flight conditions- I think it may only be used when removing the cone for maintenance.
terminator363 Posted October 1, 2015 Author Posted October 1, 2015 Thanks a lot for your answer! Happy Bug Hunting!
rinkerbuck Posted April 15, 2020 Posted April 15, 2020 My nose cone never changes from 20% no matter how fast I'm going.
Cgjunk2 Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 And on a related note, as hard as I try, I dont see the actual nosecone move when viewing the plane externally. Is this correct?
Longiron Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 Yes it moves. As said above, set to manual mode and dial the needle on the dash. Total movement is 200mm I think. I've seen 55% at 55k feet M2.2 IAS about 750kph but then you hit the magic mach limit and she goes cold. Very disappointing, I've pushed the SU33 to M2.5 and even M2.9 in a dive.
rossmum Posted April 16, 2020 Posted April 16, 2020 My nose cone never changes from 20% no matter how fast I'm going. You're not going high enough. If you never leave the deck, you won't see if move, because you're mostly flying transonic or only very slightly supersonic.
