CrackerJack Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 After poking around the forums I've decided to go with Helios. I fly multiple AC and it seems like the most flexible option. I am a bit confused when it comes to the monitor. My primary monitor is 1920x1080. I'd like to get a 21 or 23 inch for Helios. Do I need to get one which displays 1920x1080?? What should I look for when I select a touchscreen? Win 10 64-bit, Intel Core i7-7700k@4.2GHz, MSI 1080Ti , 16 GB, 500GB SSD, LG 34UM95, Acer T232HL, TrackIR 5 Pro, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Combat Rudder Pedals.
FSFIan Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Helios does not care about the display size. However, you should go with 1920x1080: there are some absolutely amazing Helios profiles available for download, and those are made for 1920x1080 resolution the "full HD" resolution is where most of the offers are, so that's also where you find the highest competition and the best bang for your buck I selected my touch screen by price alone. I got a Hanns.G HT231 23" touch screen (1920x1080) for about 250 €. The "5ms fast response time" is marketing speak (measured grey-to-grey instead of black-to-white I guess), so when I scroll a web page for example, high-contrast contours like text become noticeably blurry. At that price point, that was to be expected. But that does not matter for a Helios panel -- most of the content is static anyway and you are not going to play a first person shooter on your MFCDs. Gadroc Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 The only real requirement is that the touch screen works appropriately in the version of windows you use. The one thing I would look for is the touch screen type. An optical or capacitive multi-touch system works best. Especially if you want to use sliders or rotary style inputs. Resistive touch screens work fine but require far more pressure to keep the mouse button down. As Ian said you want at least a 1920x1080 screen to take advantage of most of the existing profiles, but any will work. Helios can resize profiles to your screens but things can quickly get to small to actually use. Personally I think the sweet spot is 21"-24" screen with an optical multi-touch controller. I have not kept up with the market on this so don't have specific screens to recommend anymore.
CrackerJack Posted February 12, 2015 Author Posted February 12, 2015 Thanks guys, that helps a lot. Now I'm on the slippery slope, I've decided to go with 3 monitors for world view and a separate touchscreen with Helios. So I need to do some more digging to figure out what to do in terms of the rest of the kit. CrackerJack Posted February 12, 2015 Author Posted February 12, 2015 Ok change of plans instead of going with 3 monitors plus the Helios monitor I've decided to go with the LG 34um95 which is 3440x1440. The Helios would be 1920x1080. I have a GTX 970. Would there be any issue with the different resolutions? s1man Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 There wouldnt be any issue with the different resolutions, i used to have a few different res monitors working with dcs and helios. actually i still have one thats different and its working fine. Just my 2 cents for what its worth i would definitely recommend a capacitive multi touch touchscreen. I still have a small resistive but its really only good for a couple push buttons.. terrible for rotaries. Optical worked fine but i couldnt get on with it, seemed to press buttons before my finger had hit.. maybe it was because it was fairly cheap, or maybe just personal preference... so i ended up replacing with 2 capacitive touchscreens and kept my small lilliput resistive just for rarely used pushbuttons. cichlidfan Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 The only issue I have had with an optical screen is if dirt/dust builds up in the bottom corners it can hinder operation of switches near the bottom of the screen. The solution, of course, is to keep the sensor areas clean. Hi CJ, I have found over the years that I have gravitated to having one large central screen,30" 2560 x 1600 I think, and given up the side screens. I use Trackir to look around, and always hated that bezel disjoint between 3 screens. In a darkened room the big screen feels just as good. I have a touchscreen below running Helios. Mostly flying Ka50, Mi-8 and Huey these days. Looking to work out how to connect Mi-8 to Helios. Lots of head-scratching currently!
