Morgy Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 After a long hiatus from simming, last year I bought myself a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and gave DCS a go. I own the A-10C module but so far I've stuck almost entirely to Black Shark. I have some spare cash and it's only a matter of time before I pick up Elite: Dangerous so I'm thinking of getting my first HOTAS (including rudder pedals). Based on my research so far I'm leaning towards a CH Products setup. Trouble is I now have the dilemma of choosing between the Combatstick and Fighterstick. From what I've read it seems most people advocate the Fighterstick since it has more buttons in total, but I think I'd much prefer having a simple thumb button like on the 3D Pro to use as my trim button in Black Shark. I imagine using the thumb hat for this would feel very unnatural, and indeed the real KA-50 has a thumb button for this purpose: http://walkarounds.airforce.ru/avia/rus/kamov/ka-50/airforce_ru_ka-50_77.jpg So my question is, are there any Fighterstick owners out there happily using it to fly the Black Shark? I'm sure the extra hats it provides would come in handy for the other sims I play, but I don't want to get it if it makes it harder to fly my beloved shark.
WildBillKelsoe Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Ka-50 uses one button to trim. Its not like fixed wing trimming. You push the trim button down, move the stick to desired attitude, and release trim button. You can also trim the rudder with said button but you have to check "rudder trim" in options/special/Ka-50. And yes I use it to fly the shark and that thing is so precise, but the biggest problem is the self-centering springs which neutralize the stick when you let go. These can be removed but probably void your warranty. But by removing them (and I haven't tried so, even though I never opened up my unit), you must hold stick at ALL times (because it is now loose). The other alternative to get TM warthog but that maybe trice (three times) the price of CH and you need to be extra delicate and lots of maintenance needed, and if gimbal breaks, bye bye unit, because TM doesn't produce gimbals anymore (CMC'd can get you partway). Oh, and you can order replacement pots from CH if you suffer spikes on the long run. AWAITING ED NEW DAMAGE MODEL IMPLEMENTATION FOR WW2 BIRDS Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.
ajax Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 I use the CH Fighterstick for BS, and I'm very happy with it. I use the pincky button for trim. One thing I particularly like is the x and y adjustable pots -- helps fine tune the Shark's attitude.
Morgy Posted February 20, 2015 Author Posted February 20, 2015 Thanks for the feedback guys, yeah hopefully the pinky button will do the job for trimming. However for the moment I think I'll buy just the CH Pro Throttle to start with and stay with the Logitech stick for a while - that only has one hat, so should give me an idea of whether I feel like I could do with one more (Combatstick) or 3 more (Fighterstick).
DieHard Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 (edited) Hi, I use 104th's Crunch's CH .map since BS1 that uses my Fighterstick, Pro Throttle and Pro Pedals. I have not flown the Shark for a couple months but his profile was still working then. http://www.ch-hangar.com/forum/index.php/files/file/131-dcs-blackshark/ He hasn't minded helping me when I PM'ed him within DCS in the past. The Pro Throttle's mini-stick needs a minimum 14 deadzone in both its X & Y axis to eliminate its annoying drift. For help with this, Bob Church at CH Hangar Forums helped me. I have had my CH Products gear for 5 years and still use very little dead-zone. Their controllers are really built well, but for $125 USA per each, they better be. I wore out a Logitech and then a Saitek controller in 2 years per each. Concerning the Pro Throttle, this "Franken Potato" variation by username Ghost is very tempting, I will probably do this one of these days. Ghost is somewhere at the top of the food chain concerning higher level thinking, for sure, especially as to the various ways he programs the controllers using the CH Control Manager . Sokol1_br Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 ... but the biggest problem is the self-centering springs which neutralize the stick when you let go. If, remove the springs and set the 'stick pinkie button as modifier for X and Y axis. So, if need remove the hand of 'stick - and he fall for one side due no self-centering springs - no input is send by X and Y, as the modifier is no pressed. A kind of "dead man" switch.
