0utLAW Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Hey guys and gals, it's been a while and I'm glad to be back. I've been kicking around the idea of building a Desk/simpit out of extruded aluminum. I was wondering if anyone has experience using this material and what I might want to take into consideration before buying this material(metric vs standard, hollow vs solid, single vs double...) Any tips, ideas, PHOTOS, of pits and the use of this product would be more than welcome. i7-8700k 3.70mhz|64GB DDR4 G.SKILL Ripjaw V 3200|ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 2080 8G GDDR6|AsRockZ390 Extreme4|2 Samsung 870QVO 1TB, 1 Samsung 860 QVO 1TB, 1 Samsung 860EVO 500GB|Corsair 750D|Corsair H-100i|Corsair AX750|LG 34GN850-B|Acer UT241Y|TM Cougar MFDs| Buddyfox UFC|TM Warthog HOTAS(Modified Spring/Slew Control Stick, Upgraded PCB, Stick Extension)|Saitek Combat Pedals|Corsair Nightsword|Corsair K70|TrackIR5|Custom A-10C Panels|
Ragtop Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Extrusion is a very good and versatile material to work with. Pros: Very strong for its relative weight Easy to get hold of Lots of useful shapes and connectors (Hinges, angle brackets, joiners) Infinitely adjustable Cons: Expensive Requires extensive planning before purchase of materials Not always easy to retrofit other components (Switch panels etc) I've seen some great cockpits for a variety of uses (Total Spanish Simulator comes to mind) 476th vFG Alumni
X93355 Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Haven't used extruded but having a huge appreciation for aluminum. Such a great product to meld / weld etc. Gives a great finish if you want to powder coat it. Looking forward to seeing your plans come together. Lausbub78 Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I made a "Cockpit" with the frame made of 20x20mm respectively 40x20mm. I'm still improving some stuff over time, but overall im satisfied with how it turned out. It was more work than i have expected though. Still need to do something better to mount the Seat, before i used a Playseat, now it's a Car seat which I like much better. I have no place to work, like a Garage or a Basement so I had to plan carefully what lenghts I needed. Cutting is easy if you have the room and the tools for it. Drilling is not a problem either, but you have to watch out on the lenghts of the Screws you are using. I dont know the exact ammount of screws i had to put in, but it's easily 150-200, propably more. Sorry for the low quality pictures.
