Ok, broke down and ordered an ASUS GTX970 OC edition. :music_whistling:

Picking it up from the shop after work today. My question:

My 'current' card is the 760GTX, can I just pop it out of the case and pop the 970 in, will the drivers recognise the new card or do I have to do it the old fashioned way.

Remove drivers, remove card, put new card in, install drivers again. Anyone in the knowhow?

Current specs: Windows 10 Home 64bit, i5-9600K @ 3.7 Ghz, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB Samsung EVO 860 M.2 SSD, GAINWARD RTX2060 6GB, Oculus Rift S, MS FFB2 Sidewinder + Warthog Throttle Quadrant, Saitek Pro rudder pedals.

best option is remove drivers then install the new card. Theoretically it should be just plug and play, but I would not chance it. Only 5 min more work to do it right.

I just when from a 750 ti to 970 last night , popped old one out, new one in . When I booted only on monitor showed up, buy it automatically installed the driver (reinstalled ?) , rebooted and I was fine. It turned out there was an updated driver anyway, so I updated the driver after. No issues .

It's always recommended to uninstall drivers and reinstall everytime an video card upgrade happens even if their from the same manufacturer and unified drivers architecture.

What is not necessary these days is to uninstall and reinstall every drivers update. The NVIDIA installer, for example, offers you the option to do a clean install

Btw, I have the same GTX 760 and I'm looking forward to do a budget upgrade to a GTX 970. Have you experienced a significant performance increase with this new video card?

My rig specs:

Intel Core i7 4770 @3.4Ghz // Corsair 16GB DDR3 // MoBo Asus Z87K // HDD 1TB 7200RPM // eVGA Nvidia GTX 760GT 2GB DDR5 // LG 3D 47" 1920x1080 // Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS // Saitek Combat Pro Pedals // Thrustmaster MFD Cougar pack // PS3 Eye + FTNOIR

I've just upgraded from a GTX570 to a GTX970 (Gigabyte, 4G-OC version). (Yes I've been naughty and not removed previous drivers..)

The difference for me was significant! I have not tried it in a combat mission with loads of smoke and that stuff, but just flying around, the difference is amazing.

Where with the 570 I was getting ~40~50 FPS, I'm now getting 100~120.

Well I had the latest Nvidia drivers (released with the Witcher3) installed, so I opted to just plug n play. It worked flawlessly, the PC just had to boot twice.

The performance increase in the W3 is HUGE. To be honest I havent tested it much (just played the Witcher3) but I was stunned with how much better the game ran & looked. I went from 30-35 FPS to nearly completely stable 60 FPS at even better settings (High vs Ultra). One other thing to consider my GTX760 was a 4GB RAM edition.

I dont think you will see much increase in DCS at least, sure you will get twice the maximum FPS but your MINIMUM FPS in DCS is always caused by CPU latency.

Im guessing the big payoff will be with EDGE, since that supports DX11 and will offload more calculations from the CPU to the GPU.

I think you will be better served by overclocking that i7 to 4Ghz, I did that with my i5 and the differnce in DCS was very noticable. One other thing I noticed, when changing cards was that my CPU fan was choke full of dust. I used a vaccum cleaner and removed all the dust between the fan and the cooler. Im not sure how much of a difference that made, but Im going to make a habbit of cleaning the dust from the CPU and GPU fan every six months, a lot of crashes/slowdowns/freezes can be attributed to something as simple as thermal throttling.

I´m on the way to upgrade my PC. My actual one is in the Sig and I wanna go to a i7 4790K. As I own a GTX 760 already I´m interested in the difference between the 760 anf the 970 in DCS. Should I spent the extra 350,-€ or should I stay at the existing one and simply enjoy the extra power of the CPU. I´m playing DCS only.....any comment would be great.

P.S.: Could think about a Warthog if I skip the 970.....arghh.....hard decision.

Can't understand why you want to use the old driver? You got a new card - the driver uninstall and a fresh install is less than 10 min - so why to even have a dilemma about it?

I'd wait on the card. My rig runs great with a 4790k and a GTX760, it's even not too bad with 3+1 monitors.

Hi Deezle,

many thanks for the input. This is exaclty what I wanted to hear ;) Even though the GTX 970 would be great to have the GTX 760 is only 1,5 years in my rig. I´m running 3 Displays as well but the Cockpit is only on one, the rest is for Helios and MFCDs.

Yesterday I found a post at SimHQ where someone moved from GTX 670 to GTX 970 with a i7 2500K (I´m at work and the link is firewalled, but I belive it is this one http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/4026896/GTX_670_upgrade_to_GTX_970).

His DCS A-10C Benchmark showed appr. 15 FPS more with the GTX 970. Hmm. Doesn´t matter if we talk about 45 vs. 60FPS but there I saw min. FPS 25 vs. 40.

Anyway, I believe I save the money for the time being and will think about an update later on. I hate my undecidedness......

Because I dont want to waste 10 minutes? Also my drivers were completely up to date (exactly the same drivers for the 760GTX and 970GTX).

Yesterday I did my very first flight on my new rig. Wow. Where I had 25FPS before I have a solid 50FPS now with the same settings. And I´m still testing. Once I switch to a 970 I will also post my findings, but actually I´m still fine with my 760.

P.S.: Changed two Nvidia Cards recently without reinstalling drivers, worked like charm for me.
