Hullo gents,

I have been flying the Huey more and more in combat scenarios and I rapidly learned that when you do a combat landing in a hot LZ, you are bound to get zinged by something.

So far, the types of damage I have experienced the most are a complete loss of power, loss of hydraulics, loss of certain cockpit instruments (like airspeed indicator) and an oil leak (which splutters all over the roof, it's pretty cool).

With a loss of power, you usually have no choice but to do an autorotation landing. Pretty straightforward.

With a loss of certain cockpit instruments, there is not much you can do but fly visually and wing it like a champ'.

My question is: for a loss of hydraulics and oil overheat, is there anything you can do to save the ship?

I have succeeded in flying the 3 minute stretch back to base with hydraulic failure, but the controls were very sluggish, very hard to manage since the ship would always wobble left and right. Landing was one of the scariest things ever, but at least I know it is possible. However, I do not know if there is any emergency procedure for a hydraulic failure (like a backup hyd system?). I do not know what you should do in case of an oil leak as well.

Do you guys have any experience in how to manage your ship when you have different types of damage? I'd be curious to have some input from the helicopter pilots among us as well.

HYD loss is not disastrous since you still have some control, I would try and do a skidded landing at 40 to 60 kts.

A oil leak will cause the bearings to either grind or overheat in the gasturbine engine, which might cause a fail sooner or later. The best you could do in that case is always be in a state to execute a auto rotation.
