dynamocl Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 Hi all, Did some searching and couldn't find any thing relevant, so I deceided to ask a question to those "in the know". Obviously the cannon on our soon to be new toy is'nt as controllable as something like, for example, the Cobra's, Apache's or Havok's (having one less aircrew would probably account for this). But I am assuming the cannon does have some elevation control (and a little laterl, but on to starboard?). I think I have read it can deflect a little, but not much. Is this correct? If the cannon can therefore move, how do we (as pilots) control the cannon? Is the cannon slaved to the TDC on the Hud, and the cannon tracks the target as the tagret/weapon platform moves? So in essence we can move the aiming point using a hat control etc? Or is it more like the gun pods, weher we lock onto a target using the targetting camera, and then the cannon is slaved to that aim point? Just curious, cheers.
Sleek Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 this is a guess but i presume its controled like the IHADSS in the apache (Integrated Helmet And Display Sighting System) or the russian form of this? Here's where i've used the IHADSS in EECH and as long as u've got a weapon selected (and with my TIR 3pro) I selects targets just by looking at them..cool stuff ;) Be Good..Be Strong..:drink: ;)
dynamocl Posted May 24, 2006 Author Posted May 24, 2006 I knew it could move Weta, and I have seen those. But as I said, clearly not any where near as much degree of freedom as an AH1 for example. I dont think helmet control would work due to the limited movement of the gun. I assume it works like the gun pods in the 25T, just with a little lateral control also.
Shepski Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 You can use the on board cannon in a few ways... 1. Boresight as a static gun. 2. Slaved to a locked target with the Shkval that will continue to track the target as you move within the limts of the gun as indicated on the HUD and TV display. 3. Using the Shkval targeting box, move it manually which is slaved to the gun so you can fire on targets witout a lock. 4. With the helmet sight that is slaved to the Shkval to engage locked targets.
Weta43 Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 Because you said "But I am assuming the cannon does have some elevation control (and a little laterl)" I thought you weren't sure that it did move lateraly and vertically - which meant that you probably hadn't seen the screen shots, cause then you'd know it did - just not how much :-) I think I've seen some photos of it with the cannon swung quite a long way round & read a post from someone (maybe a tester) saying it was best to approach from the side opposite the gun 'cause then they had to turn around, which implies they don't if you're to the right, meaning the gun must pan a reasonable amount. Cheers.
GGTharos Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 You can also 'circle strafe' if you know how, and then you don't need to turn around. dynamocl Posted May 28, 2006 Author Posted May 28, 2006 I beleive the gun being slaved to the helmet can be seen in the TBS video 1, at around 3 mins 22 seconds. The helmet "crosshair" has another cursor lagging behind it when the pilot moves his head, one assumes this is the cannon miving into position following the helmet?
