F14A+/B Air to Ground Capabilities

Now now, being all pumped for the F14 and having to wait for it the whole winter is going to give me blue balls. But man will the wait be worth it!

So I was looking at the F14s air to ground capabilities and especially the LANTIRN pod. And so I stumbled upon these photos, one of which shows a F14B in the air to ground modification for the RIO seat. I must say, that's a nice display the have at the back. I wonder if LN will make this version.

The last picture is an F-14D, the renders I've seen from LN look like the ones on the traditional F-14 A/B. Doesn't really mean anything though.

Specs:

Fractal Design Define R5 Black, ASUS ROG Strix Z370-E, Intel Core i5-8600K Coffee Lake @ 5.1 GHz, MSI GeForce GTX 1080ti 11GB 352-Bit GDDR5X, Corsair H110i, G.Skill TridentZ 32GB (2x16GB), Samsung 960 Evo M.2 500GB SSD

LNS hasn't shown us the F-14A+/B cockpit yet, probably because the final configuration wasn't nailed down back in March when the F-14A cockpit renders were posted.

Here is the F-14 RIO cockpit with the MFD:

The pre-LANTIRN/Pre-F-14B Upgrade RIO Cockpit was more or less identical to the F-14A RIO cockpit.

We'll have to wait and see what Leatherneck comes up with for the F-14B. Creating the F-14B Upgrade (LANTIRN, RIO MFD, upgraded datalinks) would be awesome, but there might not be much data on those systems.

Thanks for the link. The photos and he comments relay cleared some stuff. I was wondering what are the differences in RIO cockpits between all of the F-14s models. I got especially confused about this one:

I was thinking: Did they ran out of new spare parts and replace the TID with an old one? Is this an F-14B?. Anyway thanks for the link.

It seems a VF-154 Black Night F-14A RIO seat picture. According to the jet to the right in the picture. If it would be a "B" it would have the Sparrow Hawk HUD installed.....

That photos is the original F-14D RIO Cockpit (1990-1997 or so). It was the first model to use MFDs, both in the pilot and RIO cockpit. They F-14D later replaced the large 'fishbowl PTID" with an MFD around the same time as the F-14A and B (1997-99).

You're right, it's an F-14A of VF-154. It says 104 BKR (Black Knights Rule) just to the left of the MFD - indicating VF-154 Modex 104. That jet was the only Tomcat lost in OIF, suffered an engine failure with a fuel transfer failure - it was built in 1974 and still flying combat missions in 2003! Love that story.

Anyway, an F-14B would not necessarily have a Sparrowhawk with the RIO MFD. The "F-14B Upgrade" went operational in late-96 to 97 with the new MFD among other upgrades. The Sparrowhawk wouldn't really get into the fleet till 2001-2002(depending on the squadron).

Talking about F-14A's air to ground you might find this page useful:

Nice link - lots of deployment dates and info for all three F-14 models.

@BlackLion213, I thought the Fish Bowl was removed with the upgrades in 2002-2003, so where the HUD was getting in the fleet aswell......I know the story too about "104"....

The Fishbowl was removed first, between 1997-99 depending on the squadron. The Sparrowhawk came later and was only fitted to F-14Bs - unlike the MFD which was installed across the entire fleet. The MFD and HUD were part of separate upgrades.

I like spreading around the "104" story - to me it really speaks to the Tomcat's perseverance despite minimal funding and old aircraft. :)
