dburne Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 Hey gang, So I have a 256 gb Samsung Pro SSD just for my games, it is my E: drive. At some point, I am going to want a larger capacity drive to store my games on. If I should just replace this drive with a larger capacity SSD, could I not just copy the games out of the old drive, and copy them back into the new drive being as it will still be my E: drive, without the need to reinstall any of these games? Thanks for any tips, Don B EVGA Z390 Dark MB | i9 9900k CPU @ 5.1 GHz | Gigabyte 4090 OC | 64 GB Corsair Vengeance 3200 MHz CL16 | Corsair H150i Pro Cooler |Virpil CM3 Stick w/ Alpha Prime Grip 200mm ext| Virpil CM3 Throttle | VPC Rotor TCS Base w/ Alpha-L Grip| Point Control V2|Varjo Aero|
Brisse Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 Sure, that will work. Why ditch the old one though? Just leave it in there and use both the new and old drive. Start installing games on the new one once the old one if full. Personally I have two 256gb SSD's and three old hard-drives in the same PC :)
dburne Posted October 11, 2015 Author Posted October 11, 2015 Yes that would be nice, but IIRC my X79 motherboard only has two good Intel controllers for the SSD's , and I already have two SSD's. One for my OS and programs, then this other one for my games. I could use one of my slower Marvell controllers, but then that would probably defeat the purpose... zxarkov Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 If you upgrade to a larger SSD you could certainly clone your current drive to a larger without reinstalling anything. Look into Clonezilla, etc. __________________________________________________________ i7 3930k @ 4.7GHz | GTX 980 Ti | 16GB G.Skill 2133 Quad Channel | Samsung 850 EVO SSD | Win7 ProX64 | CH Fighterstick | CH Pro Pedals | CH Throttle | BenQ XL2730Z 1440p
nathan33 Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 I have had good experience with Samsung evo ssds. I'd recommend Samsung SSD 850 EVO
nathan33 Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 I'm a huge Samsung ssd fan myself. I have two in my system: a 128 gb 830 and a 850 Evo. http://pc4u.org/best-ssd/

Look into Clonezilla, etc. Being as it is just my games on the E drive ( the 256gb SSD) , could I not just copy the games out of it and paste them back into the new E drive I would put it? ( The OS is on a separate SSD ( C) drive.) Brisse Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 Yes, if it's only games, then you can just copy everything. Make sure the folder structure is the same. Cloning would be necessary if it was your OS disk, but in this case it isn't.

Thanks, The other controller, baring any stability concerns, is not going to be detrimentally slower. A SSD on it should still be faster than a HDD on the Intel controller. You can hook them all up but put your smallest drive on the "slower" controller. http://104thphoenix.com/
dburne Posted October 14, 2015 Author Posted October 14, 2015 Sounds good, thanks guys!
