Hey gang,

So I have been working with the training mission, data link and wingmen. I also have the manual I have been referencing as well, on how to designate a target with the shkval, send to memory, and then send to a specific wingman and order him to attack it.

I am a little confused though. Ok here is what I am doing:

I uncage the shkval, and find a target. In this case in the training mission, there are 4 vehicles on one end of the runway, 3 tanks and a smaller vehicle.

Using the shkval, I move the cage over one of these targets, get a lock on it ( I do get the TA symbal), and then I click on the target type button ( vehicle), and send to memory. All good so far.

I then hit the target mode reset button ( per the manual), which puts the shkval back in boresight mode, and then I click on the target type button again, then click on number 4 for the 4th wingman, and then click send to memory. All good so far, on the Abris it shows the target designated.

Then, I issue a command to wingman 4, to engage data link target, and then the number one option ( target).

Now, in doing so, I would think wingman 4 would then proceed to engage that one target I designated in the system. He does confirm and runs in, but then when he engages, he goes ahead and engages all 4 targets that are there together, rather than just the one target I designated and sent to him.

Am I doing something wrong, or am I misunderstanding how the data link and targets sent to wingmen should work? I mean I guess it is ok he goes ahead and gets all 4 targets, but I did not send all 4 to him, only the 1... I would think in order for him to engage all 4, I would have needed to designate all 4, sent them to him, and then ordered him to engage data link targets.

Any tips appreciated!

Did you tell your wingman to engage "target by type" ?

No, I ordered him to attack data link ( F8 ), and target (F1).

I tried it like three times, each time with the same result.

I'm getting the same behavior from my wingman in the shooting range instant mission. :(

Thanks for checking this on your end, good to know it was not something I was doing on my end then.

Perhaps in the training mission he already has links for the other targets. I've noticed that giving the command 'Flight Rejoin Formation' clears all of their data links. Try giving this command before 'Engage, Datalink, Single Target' and see if it has the same results.

EDIT: If you want to ease the process of working with wingmen, check out my VAC profile. Makes it much more enjoyable: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=49421

It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm

Is he seeing the whole unit as the target, rather than an individual vehicle?

I'm learning to fly - but I ain't got wings

With my head in VR - it's the next best thing!

Taken from the manual:

  1. “Datalink Target – Target” instructs wingmen to stop their current tasks and attack a target or group of targets nearest to the datalinked target location.
  2. “Datalink Target – Targets” instructs wingmen to stop their current tasks and attack all targets within a 3km radius of the datalinked target location.
  3. “Datalink Target – Target by Type” instructs wingmen to stop their current tasks and attack a target or group of targets of a specified type (SAMs, Vehicles, or Other) nearest to the datalinked target location.
  4. “Datalink Target – Targets by Type” instructs wingmen to stop their current tasks and attack all targets of a specified type (SAMs, Vehicles, or Other) within a 3 km radius of the datalinked target location.

So the wingman will attack targets that are near the datalink target.

Well that explains it then, thanks for the info Yeros!

I have been reading the manual on the datalink targets and somehow managed to miss that I guess...

I was operating on the incorrect assumption that target ( singular ) meant just the target I had locked on and sent to the specific wingman...

Good to know that is by design, now I don't have to worry with it any more!
