[REPORTED] Landing Gear Position Indicator & Warning System

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

What we have "in-game" for landing gear position indicators seems to work ok, but there seems to be some major differences to the description in the real F-86F Flight Manual.

I don't know if there's any interest in trying to get the two to match, but I offer the following up for discussion and your thoughts, first the relevant pages from the manuals, then some screen shots from in-game at various stages of a flight, along with some 'photoshopped' images I've knocked up with my interpretation of what I think the manual describes. Have a read through the following, then compare my shots and see if you agree.

Taken from the F-86F Flight Manual (pdf pages 51-52)

and from the F-86F Maintenance Handbook (pdf pages 188-190)

I've extracted the relevant text here for quick reference:

First on the ground with the aircraft unpowered (except for the hot battery bus). The parallel red and yellow diagonal lines of the 'unlocked condition' are displayed for each gear as the primary bus is not energized, the gear handle 'unsafe' warning light is unpowered, as is the gear warning 'horn' (The parallel red and yellow diagonal lines are not illuminated at this stage, I assume it's just a coloured shutter type mechanism).

'In-game' screen shot on the left, my interpretation from the manual on the right.

Next with battery-starter switch to 'BATTERY', the primary bus is now powered, so the red and yellow diagonal lines of the shutter disappear to leave just the an illuminated miniature wheel indicating the gear is down and locked (I've no idea what colour this indication is, I'm just going by what's in the maintenance handbook), the gear handle 'unsafe' warning light is now powered, as is the gear warning 'horn'

As the primary bus is already powered, connecting external power shouldn't make any difference to the indication as far as I can find, so I'm not sure why the current in game indications get brighter when external power is connected.

If the gear lever is inadvertently placed to 'UP' on the ground, the warning horn and gear handle 'unsafe' warning light will come on.

Next moving on to after takeoff, the gear is selected 'UP', the gear handle 'unsafe' warning light comes on as the doors and gear unlock, and the parallel red and yellow diagonal lines of the 'unlocked condition' are displayed.

Gear_Indications_011a.jpg Gear_Indications_011b.jpg

As each gear locks in to place, each of the independently monitored gear positions indicators will go from the parallel red and yellow diagonal lines of the 'unlocked condition' to the 'UP' indication.

Gear_Indications_013a.jpg Gear_Indications_013b.jpg

With all the gear up and locked, the gear handle 'unsafe' warning light will still remain on until all the gear doors have also locked into place.

Gear_Indications_014a.jpg Gear_Indications_014b.jpg

All gear & doors now up & locked, and throttle above minimum cruising rpm.

Gear_Indications_015a.jpg Gear_Indications_015b.jpg

If the throttle is reduced below minimum cruising rpm during flight, the gear handle 'unsafe' warning light will come back on.

Gear_Indications_014a.jpg Gear_Indications_014b.jpg

Similar to the takeoff sequence, for landing the gear is selected 'DOWN', the gear handle 'unsafe' warning light comes on as the doors and gear unlock, and the parallel red and yellow diagonal lines of the 'unlocked condition' are displayed.

Gear_Indications_016a.jpg Gear_Indications_016b.jpg

As each gear locks in to place, each of the independently monitored gear positions indicators will go from the parallel red and yellow diagonal lines of the 'unlocked condition' to the miniature wheel 'DOWN' indication.

Gear_Indications_017a.jpg Gear_Indications_017b.jpg

With all the gear down and locked, the gear handle 'unsafe' warning light will still remain on until all the gear doors have also locked into place.

Gear_Indications_018a.jpg Gear_Indications_018b.jpg

All gear & doors now down & locked.

As I said at the beginning, this is just my interpretation of what I think the manual describes. I'm interested to hear if you agree, disagree, have a different interpretation, have any photos of the F86 gear indicator, or maybe even firsthand experience, anyone flown the F86?

Thanks for taking a look at this, the latest version seems to tie up with the real manuals description much better. Pilot_salute1.gif

Hopefully one day we can get the gear handle to light up as well.

Thanks derelor.

I like the new Landing Gear Position Indicators, but I assume they would have been backlit or illuminated in some way when the aircraft was powered, they're almost impossible to see at night at the moment.
