Cybermat47 Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Hey guys, I'm having trouble with the F-15 C's RWR. According to the manual, missiles should appear on the RWR display. However, they never do for me, and I end up being swatted out of the sky by missiles that I thought I'd evaded. How can I tell when a missile is tracking me, and when I've lost it? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

OnlyforDCS Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 (edited) Radar guided missiles will rarely appear on the RWR and only if they are ARH missiles. You will 'sometimes' see a full lock 'circle', with a big M in it, which would indicate an ARH launch, but against SARH missiles I never ever see it. You do however get an audible launch warning. So keep your ears open. This is my experience with the TEWS, it's still probably the best RWR in the game so far. IR missiles do not track by radar, so there will be no launch warning or indication ever. OnlyforDCS Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Okay. What's the range of the heatseekers that Russian fighters carry? Su-27s have been getting me with them from BVR. Su 27's can carry two R27ETs. They are the heat seeking versions of the R27ER and their range is quite high (compared to other heaters). Although they are limited by the IRST system that needs to find and track your aircraft's heat signature quite a way away. Im not really sure what their ingame range is, missiles ranges are a very debateable topic in this community and the devs seem to change them from patch to patch. I haven't used the ET lately, so someone else who has can answer that question. Cybermat47 Posted December 9, 2015 Author Posted December 9, 2015 I see, thanks for the info. I really wish that training missions were included with the F-15, because I honestly can't evade missiles with the F-15. I know how to in the Su-27, but there are training missions for that. I guess I just put on the ECM as needed, and keep my target in my 3 or 9 o'clock? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
OnlyforDCS Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 (edited) It really depends on the situation and the weapon used. There is no one definitive answer to fit all situations. You can go in the notch against SARH or ARH missiles (putting their planes at 3 or 9 o clock) but you have to be below the enemy's radar to disappear in the ground clutter. Use countermeasures, chaff against radar guided missiles, flares against infra-reds. Don't be afraid to disengage and run away if you are outnumbered or in a bad tactical situation. There are a lot of videos on youtube and materials here on the forum that are very instructive but the AA game is probably the most difficult to get a handle on in DCS so don't expect to become an ace overnight. Practice makes perfect. Also I wouldn't bother with ECM at the moment, it will simply paint a big fat target on your back. Ok, not sure how proficient you are with the su27 but if you can evade Aim120's then you should be able to evade Sarh missiles with the same maneuver. The key is that with SAHR launches you will get a "launch" tone but you will not get a "M" on your RWR. You also do not get a "distance cue" like on the Russian SPO with AHR missiles[aim120]. Best advice that I can give you with the f15 is DO NOT GO HEAD ON with threats. Until you know what to do and how long missile flight times are. Once you figure out missile flight times and you can use the stop watch function you then can do head on fighting and know when to "jink". Until then you should crank your target until you're ready to fire. then pull into your target fire and crank back. This will keep his missile traveling the longest distance possible to you. If you know you've been fired on after you fire your active homing missile wait for pitbull then immediately put him to your 3 or 9 o'clock position dive and chaff. Hopefully he will get hit while trying to support his missile and you will notch him. you can also go into masking in terrain or pull up hard then back down when you think his missile is "close" to you.. Another technique when you know missile flight times is to actually turn into the missile. you should be between 360-440kts [go throttle idle if against an ET] then pull Hard & chaff/flare right before it hits. [The reason this works is due to physics. Once you pull into the missile it will "relax" its steering. Then when you pull it will not have enough time to react and will over shoot so long as you're timing is right] Doing this requires an absolute knowledge of flight times or atleast visual on the missile. I can do it easily when launched at by ET's due to the massive smoke trail. 2 For the WIN [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]If your desired effect on the target is making the pilot defecate his pants laughing then you can definitely achieve it with a launch like that.
Cybermat47 Posted December 10, 2015 Author Posted December 10, 2015 Thanks pr1malr8ge, using your tips I managed to shoot down an Su-27, only expending two AIM-120 Cs, and evaded the two R-27 ERs he shot at me. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Glad to hear.. Yes I would say on average it takes atleast 2 120's to make a kill.. BTW aim120B's have a 2stage propulsion and seem to be a bit better in "closer" ranges. Might be due to the more surface area of the control surfaces or due to the second stage boost. Not sure. On a side note, [havent been doing it lately] I carry 2 aim7s. Those buggers seem to be B/A when dealing with targets doing High AOA or weird offset angles. But you need to be "CLOSE" sub 8nm. Or STUPID HIGH Stupid FAST and keep your nose PURE! Sweep Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 Somewhat OT reply to primal: The 120Bs turn better while burning...tested them on Rmin a while back, the difference between AIM-120B and C while turning and burning is VERY noticeable at low altitudes (where I tested them). Lord of Salt
