Hey all. I have noticed that in all the time I have been flying Lock on, I have never heard the Missle Launch Warning system actualy do anything. It seriously never makes a sound. I mainly fly russian aircraft, but isn't it supposed to have a MLWS system? has this feature been removed from Flaming Cliffs? Was it even ever there?

So, you fly in Russian a/c. American fellas mostly have ARH (Active radar homing) missiles that emitt radar signals and thus can be detected by your MLWS, but not at all aspects. Make a mission. You and an F-15 coming head on from about 50km distance. Start the mission and you will hear a radar lock tone. Now start climbing (so the F-15 is below your belly) and you won't hear the lock tone anymore. Now roll so your belly faces upwards. You will hear the lock tone again. Now when he fires a missile (that is not heat seaking since they don't emmit any signals and thus can't be detected) and do the same (climb - no lock tone, roll - lock tone). As you can see, it depends on your aspect toward the missile/bandit.

Cheers!

If you are refering to the TWD (RWR) (SPO-15LM System) located down by your right knee, then yes it should be making all sorts of sounds--well, 3 really: the periodic beep of a search radar sweeping your aircraft, the steady "scream" of a lock warning tone, and the pulsing scream of the launch warning. What you hear and when you hear it depends upon the launching aircraft's radar, type of missile being launched, and your aircraft's attitude in reference to the emitter.

If on the other hand, if you are referring to the "Missile at 10 o' clock low" type warning, that has never been implemented if you are flying with realistic settings. I never looked into it but there may be a beginner setting somewhere that allows it.

Don't know about FC, but in 1.02 this is controled by the "radio assistance" option.

Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.

Hmmmn.

You coming from Flanker, by any chance? ;)

I think he's referring to the system that says 'Missile, 6 O'clock, Low', ie it detects a launch (NOT by using the TWS/RWR system apparently). The voices can be found in one of the sound folders. Or am I wrong? I take it it's not a realistic system, but more an SA aid, like labels. Something like that. I've never seen or heard it in game.

Thats the "radio assist" feature I pressume. (it also give you vocal warnings when landing, etc)

I've definitelly heard it playing offline.

The reason I asked if he came from a Flanker background is that (certainly in Flanker 2/2.5), the Russian jets DID simulate having a true MLWS system fitted.

The manual stated that sensors mounted on the airframe picked up the IR signature of a missile launch and announced it to you - in F2.5 this was the case even BVR.

This technology exists, and I believe it is in fact an option if you choose to go shopping at Sukhoi or Knaapo - however, it is an optional extra on a modern Su27.

It is used to alert active IR jamming systems that are operational on a number of western aircraft today - mostly for anti-SAM use, fitted to C-130, C-17 and EH-101 that I know of, most likely others that I don't.

It could indeed be used to warn a fast jet pilot of a missile launch - but it's a fairly solid conclusion that the hardware just isn't fitted to 90's Russian jets.

The RWR will signal a BVR radar-guided missile launch as detected from some change in the radar signal (someone else can describe that better than I can), but there is no other way of detecting a launch other than visually. So for an IR-guided launch, keep your eyes peeled for smoke trails ;)

Ahhh, thanks fellas. Yes, I was referring to the "missle six oclock low" where it speaks to you scenario. I play only with realistic settings on, and I noticed this feature seemed to be absent. I also was flicking through my hard copy manual of Lomac (I bought the nice version online a few years ago) and it said quite clearly in the MWLS section that this was a feature. I assumed it was standard, not dependant on difficulty settings.

Cheers.

Yup...you're actually 100% correct. IRL, there is no such system in your aircraft. Your RWR will tell you if a radar-guided threat has fired on you, after that warning, its up to you and/or your wingnut to make visual contact with the missile, unless it is the rare ARH variety, and even then the RWR is not all that accurate for range. If the missile/gun is IR or optical, there is absolutely no warning of it that would come from any electronic system in your aircraft. If you are within its engagement envelope and don't happen to see it with your good ol' Mk 1 eyeball, you are probably not going home that day.
