SkateZilla Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Flat Shadows Disable Self Shadowing I believe. I also believe you are seeing the shadow phases, there are a specific amount of lighting phases. Bourrinopathe Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 (edited) With the flat terrain shadows OFF any building, structure (bridge and such), aircraft, cast a shadow on the other objects (including the terrain). The terrain projected shadows are pre-rendered and not real-time. There are a few versions switching at specific hours of the day (unlike the sun position). You can accelerate the time during a mission to see how it changes. No idea if there will be more different shadow maps in the future. I ask because this way shadows are way lower quality so we have to choose between high quality or self shadowing? I agree the current general dynamic shadow rendering does not look that pretty. The shadows resolution depends on the distance form the camera but the transition between the different resolution levels is brutal and very noticeable. It may be because it's still alpha. On the other hand, I assume smooth shadows would be way more taxing on the performance. The flat shadows rendering looks more homogeneous. I have just tested 1.5.2 and both, terrain flat shadows on and off enables self shadowing for everything in the world (buildings, cars, trees, etc.) and whats more, the shadows resolution is very high...in 2.0.1, there are no self shadowing for buildings, cars, etc as soon as flat shadows are set to ON, and when set to off, shadow quality (in general) is pretty damn low... with terrain flat shadows = on, shadows are fine(as in 1.5.2) crisp and detailed but no self shadowing... Also I had no idea the new terrain shadows werent dynamic, that explains the problem with the sun and shadows position...anyway they should then add lots of more baked shadows. WIP I guess... Btw...testing a bit cloud shadows, I have realized that they are working depending of the place and/or time of day...its very weird, some times they work others dont...
