Johnny Dioxin Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 Mine is pretty old now - and still doing enough on all of my games (at 4.3GHz with 16GB 2133 DDR3 and a GTX970 G1) including DCS World :) [ame] [/ame] I'll 'upgrade' when I find a reason to. Rig: Asus TUF GAMING B650-PLUS; Ryzen 7800X3D ; 64GB DDR5 5600; RTX 4080; VPC T50 CM2 HOTAS; Pimax Crystal Light I'm learning to fly - but I ain't got wings With my head in VR - it's the next best thing!
RoflSeal Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 (edited) Better to use DCS Benchmarks http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=157374 Sandybridge 20fps avg lower at baseclock compared to Skylake and 15fps at 4GHz Also remember Sandybridge has max RAM speed of 2133Mhz. Increase to 3200mhz you get extra avg 10fps Edited February 22, 2016 by RoflSeal
Demon_ Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 (edited) i5 Sandybridge still does the bizz...? Yes. No reason to upgrade now. i5 2500K (or i7 2600K) 49 fps min. Still good! i7 6700K only 7 more at the same speed. 14% improvement. Edited February 23, 2016 by Demon_ Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.

Johnny Dioxin Posted February 23, 2016 Author Posted February 23, 2016 (edited) Well, they posted an update and possible upgrade route for those who do want to go one up (to i7 3770k), but not get a new system: I'm very happy with what my i5 2500k based rig can do - but when I next upgrade, it will be the whole shebang (probably aimed at running VR), rather than paying what is still quite a bit of cash, for just a few extra frames. Nothing in my PC is the same as it was when I bought that i5 - everything else has been upgraded every 2 years. When I looked at what needed improving, that CPU has been at the bottom of the list. If it ain't broke... Edited February 23, 2016 by Brixmis Rig: Asus TUF GAMING B650-PLUS; Ryzen 7800X3D ; 64GB DDR5 5600; RTX 4080; VPC T50 CM2 HOTAS; Pimax Crystal Light I'm learning to fly - but I ain't got wings With my head in VR - it's the next best thing!

A long time ago I wished EDGE/DCS World 2 would properly make use of multi core cpu's. Alas, it didn't come to pass, so I wouldn't count on ED changing this anytime soon. I don't really understand what you are saying here? That the cpu is underused in DCS World? I posted my usage specs somewhere - have to go and look again - but it definitely wasn't struggling. The point I am trying to make with this thread is that it isn't necessary to have the latest and expensive processor or to constantly upgrade (you see a lot of "what should I get/is this good enough?" posts around). I didn't spend (a lot of...) extra money on an i7 because I didn't see a need for it - seems I was right, too. I've even had local friends' "advisors" (in their armchairs, lol) chiding them for listening to me advising them to get an i5 when they are on a budget! Some people just have it in their heads that the only way to go is with a top i7 for gaming - and especially for simming. My i5 has done me proud in everything I've thrown at it - DCS World, FSX and P3D - in fact, all flight sims except BoS as well as leading FPS. Having said all that, I seem to have always had a knack for getting my CPUs to to perform well far longer than manufacturers (and game publishers with vested interests) want you to believe they should! :) Rig: Asus TUF GAMING B650-PLUS; Ryzen 7800X3D ; 64GB DDR5 5600; RTX 4080; VPC T50 CM2 HOTAS; Pimax Crystal Light I'm learning to fly - but I ain't got wings With my head in VR - it's the next best thing!

Konovalov Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 (edited) i7-950 @ 4.2 has done me fine over last 5 + years. First ran at stock, then oc'd to 3.8 then up to current 4.2. Only other upgrades on this X58 platform have been doubling the memory from 6 to 12gb Tri channel, SSD OS and programs drive, and finally probably the most important and often changed component being the GPU. Current 970 was a big jump from old 460. Happy with the mileage that I have got out of my X58 i7-950 combo. Only regret was not waiting for Sandybridge. Having said all that, I seem to have always had a knack for getting my CPUs to to perform well far longer than manufacturers (and game publishers with vested interests) want you to believe they should! :) I agree to most...and yes...for my understanding of computing ther CPU is underused as you say in DCS and many more titles. Intel and foremost AMD are going the multicore way whereas older titles sit on single core codes....well....12.5% for the Sim and 12.5% for the sound, leaves a total of 75% minus the system to spare. From that perspective I would say, before buying a faster Porsche cause you cant get past 120mph, maybe just shift gears one higher instead of making the engine go 10k rpm. With 5GHz I have done my fair share of speeding it up, the ball is back in the dev's half of the playground for future changes. Meanwhile I am looking for a 7GHz Intel i5 or i7 or i11 whatever....in case DCS stays single cored. I got the message that the devs looked into the code and say it wont pay to go SMP. But Bill Gates also one day said there is no need for internet, another guy said there are probably 3 companies in the need of a computer, worldwide. Before we overkill ourselves in consumption of goods with nice boxes and ads, switch on brains and improve what is there instead of buying new. Yes, I wanna keep my "old" i7 2600k, YES !!! 75% to go Gigabyte Aorus X570S Master - Ryzen 5900X - Gskill 64GB 3200/CL14@3600/CL14 - Sapphire Nitro+ 7800XT - 4x Samsung 980Pro 1TB - 1x Samsung 870 Evo 1TB - 1x SanDisc 120GB SSD - Heatkiller IV - MoRa3-360LT@9x120mm Noctua F12 - Corsair AXi-1200 - TiR5-Pro - Warthog Hotas - Saitek Combat Pedals - Asus XG27ACG QHD 180Hz - Corsair K70 RGB Pro - Win11 Pro/Linux - Phanteks Evolv-X
