bunraku Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Hi When you manually select the Jamming Mode for SAM1 and SAM2 exactly which SAM's are specifically for each mode? Also are you jamming the tracking on you to get a launch and once the missile has launched then it's not really doing anything effective? Also on RWS what I the difference between Missile Detected and Missile Launched? Thanks again.
EasyEB Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 (edited) For your first question: Manual page 408. JMR (Jammer) Window. In this display window, up to eight characters can be displayed and indicate the selected jammer program and activity status. The left side of the jammer window indicates the status of the jammer. This can either be OFF, SBY (standby) or OPR (operating) depending on the position of the mode selector dial and if the aircraft is being locked by a radar. On the right side of the window the selected jammer program is displayed. These are pre-loaded and include: AIR. Program to counter most air-to-air radars. SAM1. Program to counter older-generation SAM systems like SA-3, SA-6 and SA-8. SAM2. Program to counter newer-generation SAM systems like 2S6, SA-16, SA-11, SA-10, and SA-15. AAA. Program to counter radar-directed gun systems like ZSU-23-4 and ZU-23 / Dog Ear. For your second question: It's all very secret in real life, so I'm not going to even guess how it should work. In DCS I think it jams the tracking, not the missile. Chaff and evasive maneuvers and terrain masking for good measure. For your third question: Not sure. I think it only detects missiles beeing fired, not tracking them in the air. Edited March 10, 2016 by EasyEB
Xavven Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 IIRC, you should only jam to break a lock on your aircraft. This includes both before and after a missile has been launched, since it has to continue to track you to hit you. Your jammer automatically shuts off anyway after a few seconds if you aren't being actively locked. That said, some missiles, like the AIM-120 AMRAAM, switch to home-on-jam automatically. I'm not sure whether you're supposed to jam or not in this situation, but suffice to say the A-10 is in huge trouble in the Air-Air arena. I'd probably dive to 100 AGL to force a look-down situation and chaff like hell. Anyone got some advice?
paulca Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Remember the job of a SAM site is to **** you off first and foremost. Actually killing you is an optional bonus. They want to: Cause you to break off your target run in. Make you dump your stores and run. Scatter your formation. Cause confusion and chaos. Inflict damage that puts the plane in the hangar for weeks etc. etc. Scare and deter you and others. Actually hitting and killing you is a bonus. SAM success rates are far, far higher than their kill rates which are often tiny. Enemy troops could do well using fireworks to scare CAS aircraft as a pilot seeing a trail of white smoke coming out of a tree line at him will break and have to come off his attack run. 1
