Bisch Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 I could use a tip concerning upgrading my hardware. Upgrade my old Hardware, buy a new computer or build one from the scratch what I havent done for years. I already ordered my HTV Vice and I want to play DCS on a nice level of detail as well all severall other genres (realism shooters, strategy etc... last one shouldnt be a problem) Right now I have an i7 4770K @ 3.50 GHZ and 8 GB of RAM GeForce GTX 770 (not good enough of course) Any Hints? cichlidfan Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 A GTX 980ti, or wait for the next gen cards, hopefully in a few months. TomOnSteam Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 A GTX 980ti, or wait for the next gen cards, hopefully in a few months. +1 if you aren't in a hurry, then waiting for the new nvidia cards will be worth while :) CPU wise I think it will be fine. I'd start with a new video card, and see how it goes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cockpit Spectator Mode
BobFlex Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 Your CPU is just fine, but you can overclock it to run up around 4.5GHz without any trouble. I agree with the 980ti or wait for the next gen cards to release here in a few months. Depends how soon you want to upgrade a card, or how much your willing to spend. The new cards will definitely be a bit more expensive. You might get by with 8GB of RAM too, but 16 is usually better in my opinion. My PC alread uses up around 9GB while playing DCS online and I run at 1080p. I don't know the vives resolution but I know it's a lot higher so I'd expect it to use a little more RAM. i5-6600K (4.7GHz) || Asus Z170-A || EVGA GTX 1080 FTW || 16GB Kingston HyperX Fury 2133 DDR4 RAM || Samsung 850 EVO, Seagate Baracuda 1TB || LG 27UD68 4k Monitor || TM Warthog HOTAS (serial 57210) || MFG Crosswind || HTC Vive A-10C | M-2000C | F-5E | UH-1H | Mig-21bis | F-86F | P-51D | FW-190D9 | FC3 | CA
Bisch Posted March 29, 2016 Author Posted March 29, 2016 Thanks guys! I ll try upgrading then. Guess I ll also need to upgrade my PSU then. Can't recall Watts. Have to look it up tonight. But Im pretty sure it's too weak for a new GPU Win 10 Pro | Trustmaster Warthog | MFG Rudders | VivePro Wireless Gear Lens modded | 1080ti OC Asus | 32 GB DD4 RAM | i7 9700 | Razer Chroma Orbweaver Keypad | Corsair KB | Derek Switchbox | USB Keypad | Logitech 502 | Jetseat with SimShaker Software | TrackIR5 | Autotkey | Thrustmaster Cougar MFDs | Monstertech Mounts | Saitek Throttle Quadrant
Drag0nWIng Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 they will bring 14/16nm into next generation gpu, it will have 2.5 times performance per watt then now, I mean they will be environment friendly and power saver. just waiting the released date and buy a new card.
Bisch Posted March 29, 2016 Author Posted March 29, 2016 thx! Is there already a name/number for this cards? They will be expensive as hell when released I guess. Anyway, still sounds as a good idea Win 10 Pro | Trustmaster Warthog | MFG Rudders | VivePro Wireless Gear Lens modded | 1080ti OC Asus | 32 GB DD4 RAM | i7 9700 | Razer Chroma Orbweaver Keypad | Corsair KB | Derek Switchbox | USB Keypad | Logitech 502 | Jetseat with SimShaker Software | TrackIR5 | Autotkey | Thrustmaster Cougar MFDs | Monstertech Mounts | Saitek Throttle Quadrant
Farlander Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 depending on your situation, the best idea is to hold off. I believe buying a 980ti now is not a good choice as it will be quite obsolete (still work, but not good in performance per dollar anymore..) to the next gen that is coming this year. With AMD acually looking more promising with their next series of cards and currently working close with the development of the htc vive i only see more reason to hold off. If you absolutely have to buy right now, and cant wait for the next top line cards, i would still go for the GTX-980ti. The Fury x with the later patches has acually caught up to the 980ti, and sometimes even beats it in dx11 titles, and with dx12 that amd cards perform better. (dx12 and mantle are very similar in the way thay work, multithreading(ish). Current tests from nvidia in Ashes of the Singularity shows that either their crads don't work as well on dx12, or that the drivers are not really done yet..) If you are in the mid-range group and have to buy right now, i would, however go with team red and their R9 390 as it is showing better performance than it's counterpart (970) in most games, even the dx11 ones. from my experience owning a gtx 670 nvidia tends to forget about them kind of as soon as the next series of cards come out, probably a good choice strategically as it will make you want to switch to the new line of mid range cards. Honestly, just wait if you can.. i don't think it's a good idea to buy at this time. (im currently holding off for the next mid range cards to switch out my gtx 670, maybe with an amd as it seems very promising with dx12..)
Bisch Posted March 29, 2016 Author Posted March 29, 2016 Your advice makes sense Farlander. I already thought about buying a 200-350 Euro Card to build a bridge to next gen cards while avoiding the current high price cards. Especially as the roadmap infos arent very promising. Looks like the cards will be there late summer AT BEST. I would wait for DCS (not enough time anyway) but I doubt I can keep my Vive in a box (preordered in first hour). At least I want to play some non-DCS titles with it Win 10 Pro | Trustmaster Warthog | MFG Rudders | VivePro Wireless Gear Lens modded | 1080ti OC Asus | 32 GB DD4 RAM | i7 9700 | Razer Chroma Orbweaver Keypad | Corsair KB | Derek Switchbox | USB Keypad | Logitech 502 | Jetseat with SimShaker Software | TrackIR5 | Autotkey | Thrustmaster Cougar MFDs | Monstertech Mounts | Saitek Throttle Quadrant

Bisch Posted March 29, 2016 Author Posted March 29, 2016 I thought about a Powercolor R9 8GB for 330 Eur and squeeze it out as long as I can. This way I may even be able to wait for the first pascal price drop. Now I need to find out if my PSU can stand the R9 and the additional RAM Win 10 Pro | Trustmaster Warthog | MFG Rudders | VivePro Wireless Gear Lens modded | 1080ti OC Asus | 32 GB DD4 RAM | i7 9700 | Razer Chroma Orbweaver Keypad | Corsair KB | Derek Switchbox | USB Keypad | Logitech 502 | Jetseat with SimShaker Software | TrackIR5 | Autotkey | Thrustmaster Cougar MFDs | Monstertech Mounts | Saitek Throttle Quadrant
Bisch Posted March 29, 2016 Author Posted March 29, 2016 My computer was the first complete pre built and I have no bill concerning it's parts and I can't recall everything correctly. However, inside is an M2 Silent Pro 720W PSU. The 2 RAM bars are labeld Ballistix Sport (BG112PC.KT/201331/140095). The GPU is from ASUS. Maybe I also should run a RAM diagnosis tool. The Mainboard is an Z87-A. Do you think this Computer and PSU can handle a more recent GPU and two more DIMMs (better than mixing one big in right? the single USB 3.0 Port it has is enough for the Vive, right?
