In my years as an ordnance tech on an F-14 and F-18, Chaff buckets were capable of holding 30 chaff or 30 flare or any combination there of.

The F-14 carried two buckets. The Hornet had 4 buckets.

The F-5 can only carry 30 chaff but...15 flare?

Does it have a different type of chaff/flare launcher? And if I change the chaff/flare loadout I can carry 60 chaff or 30 flare. This doesn't seem right.

I know I'm probably comparing apples to rats, but...I just don't get it.

Yea and when you zoom in one can clearly see that there are 15 slots (for the flares) and 30 for the chaff.

Only real question would be if there are 1 or 2 flares per cartridge since some flare cartridges had 2 and others have 1.

Since that could change the number to 30 instead of 15.

But untill proven otherwise i will assume the current setup is correct

(with 15 flares 1 per cartridge)

As Noodle points out, it depends what flare type is being used. And given that different types are not simulated in DCS it makes sense to use types of 1x1 inch profile, and therefore load 30 per bucket.

Why?

Currently it is modelled by description from TO manual.

All the flare types Noodle list can be used with ALE-40 in reality, and therefore by the F-5E. Given that the characteristics of the various flare types are not modelled in DCS there is no advantage in using the larger 1x2 inch flare, in fact having fewer flares is a disadvantage. Therefore from a tactical point of view the smaller 1x1 inch types make more sense.

Which TO manual? The -1 or -34 will not go into sufficient detail on these subjects.

Edit: just to be clear, what we have now isn't wrong, it is a valid configuration. It's just that the reasons for using this configuration are not present in DCS. Therefore using a configuration that provides more flares makes more sense.
