hey all! had a quick question about AI damage modeling. i was shooting at a p-51 recently and really knocked the heck out of it. there were bullet holes over the entire thing. it had white and black smoke pouring out of it.

now i have the p-51d module and fly it a fair amount. if my plane looked like that, all sorts of terrible things would be happening to it. and pretty sure the engine would seize up pretty shortly after from lack of some fluid.

but this AI p-51 just did some evasive maneuvers and flew on its merry way back towards the nearest airbase. i active paused my plane and F2 followed this super man mustang to see how far it would make it. sure enough it made it all of the way back to the airport and landed with no obvious engine or air frame problems and a smile on the pilot's face.

is any sort of internal damage modeled with AI? guess i wasn't aware of it before now. :pilotfly:

Flight and damage models of all AI planes in DCS are very simplified at the moment and the former is noticeably affected by the latter only when some critical hit is taken (i.e. wing flies off, engine is set on fire).

By the way, many smoke/leak effects are visual only and You can fly Your plane back to base with these too.

Revised damage modelling is in the works, but it's going to take a while before it get there.

ooooh i really thought if white smoke/mist was flowing out of my plane that the fuel tank had been hit and i was losing fuel. or if the really dark smoke/mist that it was oil. thanks for the response, confirmed my theory! i'll just have to make sure i blow off a wing if i want to make a statement :)
