Tj1376 Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 I searched quite a bit and wasn't able to find much on this topic. I was really curious if any of you think the 6gb 1060 could handle VR with DCS. A few years ago I broke the bank and bought a 780TI which I've been using for three or so years. Great card but no VR. :( Now I'm trying to decide on how I want to get into VR. The 1060 seems to be the best bet with current tech, but might be limiting in the future. What are your thoughts? How would you get into VR on a budget? The base platform is more than adequate... 4770k at 4.2 with 16gb and a fast SSD. I am running Win7 Pro and currently have no plans to move to 10 (not sure if that makes a difference.) I also have no plans to update the base. The 6500 and 6600ks I've seen run similar frames in DCS with all settings maxed (1080p, I'm not investing in a monitor to run 1440 or 4K as I want to go VR.) TJ PS: last week I dropped a 25 dollar evo 212 into this rig and upped the overclock pretty significantly. Anyone who dogs the evo is an idiot. 25 bucks and easily a 20% increase in core speed with a reduction in heat. Sure there are better air coolers, but man the bang for the buck factor with this cooler is high! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Fab Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 980 or R9 390x does a better job than the 1060... If you want a card from the 10 series for VR you got to pick 1080 Intel Core i7-6700K Cpu 4.00 GHz OC 4.8 GHz Water Cooled|32 GB DDR4 ram OC| Nvidia RTX 2080Ti| TrustMaster Warthog|Saitek Battle Pro Pedals | Logitec G13| Oculus Rift S :joystick: I´m in for a ride, a VR ride:pilotfly: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBX_-Hml7_7s1dggit_vGpA?view_as=public
SkateZilla Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 a 1060 would pass baseline minimum for Oculus and Steam VR. I cannot say how well it would run DCS though. Windows 10 Pro, Ryzen 2700X @ 4.6Ghz, 32GB DDR4-3200 GSkill (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR x2), ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate, XFX RX6800XT Merc 310 (RX-68XTALFD9) 3x ASUS VS248HP + Oculus HMD, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS + MFDs
dcshobbis Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 I had a GTX 970 before, and it handled DCS just fine, though I could never reach the 90FPS frequently. The 970 was in the bottom segment of compatible graphic cards. I upgraded to the GTX 1080 just recently, and I could not say it was worth the upgrade. I will keep it since it gave me a few more FPS and I believe it will be able to handle next generation VR headsets (I hope ;-) ) DCS World need additional programming to provide a even better VR experience, so I am quite sure that You will be more then satisfied with the 1060 if your CPU can manage it. DCS world graphics in VR is more about the simulation itself needing some fixes, rather than getting a over-the-top graphics card ATM. Just my 2 cents on the topic :-) Good luck! That is exactly the kind of feedback I am looking for. THANK YOU! I spent 700 on the 780TI and don't want to do that again (on a 1080) if there are cheaper alternatives out there now. It's crazy to me that I can get a 1070 for cheaper than a 980TI and I may end up going this route to help keep costs down. TJ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I didn't think that was possible so I did some research and turns out you are correct. Seemed odd to me that a 1060 couldn't beat out a 980, but several reviews indicate that the 1060 isn't quite the beast people have been making it out to be. Thanks for your input!
