AFAIK Cobra Mode Switch is a permanent "modifier" for pinky, left and right press buttons, and left HAT, but don't affect trigger 1 and trigger 2 nor POV HAT.

In each position of Mode Switch the above buttons press another button, for example button right of POV HAT can be:

-3. Buttons 4, 11, 18 (the meaning depends on the selected control mode).

From their user manual: http://defender-global.com/files/DTMF9-NH6Operation%20manual_Cobra_M5_Manual_ENG.zip

In short, Mode Switch don't press DX buttons, so you can't use then for other function (like Saitek X-5x's mode switch).

In (VKB) Mambas - with the same grip - you can reconfigure buttons in different way.

VKB (who project Cobra M5) - use different than the usual "more of the same" approach in their projects, their USB controller is not Windows Software dependent (like other brands), but has configuration profile stored in their EPROM that can be changed by user.

Unfortunately Cobra M5 distributor - Defender - opt in lock the access to firmware options Cobra M5. I guess this mean less post sales support for then.

So Cobra M5 Mode Switch can be only... mode switch. :)

Same (distributor) approach was used in AIRROW - the European version of VKB Gladiator - distributed by Speedlink.

And for what is need drivers ? Quote from product manual:

This joystick was developed by using Plug & Play technology. Thus to install it no additionalsoftware is needed.

Just connect the joystick to your PC through USB 2.0 port. Then the system will automatically detect a new gaming device.

So go to Games Controllers (joy.cpl)

Set MODE switch in 1, press rig button and see what number will bright.

Set in 2, do the same this time should bright a different number.

Rise and repeat for 3.

• By means of system tests you may:

1. Check the operation of all the joystick buttons (23 buttons). While pressing the button onthe test page the button with corresponding number must light up.

WARNING! To check the operation of all 23 available virtual buttons switch the combat modes by the relevant tumbler.

The buttons 24‐26 are reserved in the Windows system for the tumbler modes. However they are not activated while switching the tumbler.

In game set each button number for different commands.

VKB (who project this joystick) follow PnP concept using Windows HID drivers and no Windows software needed to use the joystick (that dumb "press joystick buttons to press keyboard keys to do commands in games"). But you can use third part software (Autohotkey, Joy2Key, SVMapper, XPadder...) and use in this way.

You need understand is that can't change how Cobra M5 MODE switch work, this switch is not "joy buttons (24, 25, 26) you can use", is only MODE selector.

Well, I know using one these:

http://www.wilmslow-audio.co.uk/ekmps/shops/wilmslow/images/self-tapping-screws-socket-hex-head-304-p.jpg

Serious, in Gladiator VKB already provide a hole for use a bolt to lock their

. ;)

Just take caution to don't "bolt" the internal wires. :D

Is there any with the extra buttons? Also is this better the the x55 stick

No, just this model that is a ~50$ stick - not in same "class" of X-55 HOTAS - their competitors is Tm T.16000M, Logitech 3D PRO, Saitek "Transformer's", VKB Gladiator.

Other than their stylistic grip (SU-35 inspired) and contacless sensor in X, Y axis, is in the same class of any "entry level" joystick = low cost to make.

In the past VKB make some "high end" upgrades for Cobra M5, adding buttons and axis, metal bearing "tick" gimbal...
