seeing other aircraft

So when I did the startup training mission I can see and hear a a-10 land. Now that I have moved onto the campaign I can hear a plane landing but don't see it. My settings are set to high. I also noticed for a base that is supposed to be supporting a squadron of a-10s I only see my wingman waiting for me to start rolling. Also on approach for landing I see other aircraft taking off but once I get close and land the base is empty except for a few parked helicoptors. This is more of an observation than a question.

All depends on the way missions are built. Mind you that populating airfield with realistic number of aircraft, ground crew members, vehicles etc. would take a heavy toll on game performance for many people. Plus may be a nightmare from the AI point of view... having said that it is always good to populate the airfields at least a little bit to make impression that it is alive (something I always do in the campaigns). But that is a matter of personal preference.

I don't need a lot of aircraft but I get nothing at all. How do you populate the airfrield? if I hear a plane landing it would be nice to see it.

You would have to open the mission in the editor and add some flights. Ranger79 did a very good series of videos on that, check

As for hearing other aircraft and not seeing them - I doubd that anyone would just insert the sound of flying jets. Check F10 map to see if other flights are visible there. Do you have a clear view of entire runway?
