Radio tutorial help

Hi guys,

I've just purchased this superb module, and I am looking for some video turorial about radio usage,( I am very noob in this regards as only used simplified radio menu with FC3) , how to contact ATC , how to use kneeboard (i saw a video with a kneeboard containing a page with summary of all airport frequency of atc etc etc), how to use ILS ,etc etc.

 

P.s.: when I contact gound crew for rearm they say "copy" , start rearming (but no refueling) but they never say " rearming complete" like in fc3 , is that normal?even tough i've noticed that in fact that weapons have been mounted on the huey, but they never say "rearming complete"....thanks!:)

I'm sure if you search for 'DCS Huey radio tutorial' on Youtube, quite a few should come up. Most of them are mainly concerned with radio navigation, as that's where most people have a few questions at first, but they'll probably answer all other questions as well.

 

Perhaps to get you started, though, here's a few explanations:

In the FC3 modules you have one radio that's basically auto-tuning, so you never have to worry about any of it. So that means now in the Huey you have two things to consider:

A) You have to choose the proper radio for what you are doing. That mostly comes down to the frequencies you will be using, as every radio has a limited bandwidth to use.

B) Tune in the frequency of whoever you want to talk to.

 

The Huey has three communcation radios, plus an intercom, plus receivers strictly for navigation. Pretty much all of it is found on the central pedestal panel. One of the most important controls here is the radio selector rotary, located just in front of the weapons controls. Big rotary knob reading 'PVT INT 1 2 3 4'. That chooses which radio becomes active when you push the transmit button on the stick.

 

INT stands for intercom and can be used to talk to the ground crew.

1-3 select the various radios

4 and PVT aren't quite important in DCS

 

So, which radio does what?

 

Lets start with '3', which selects the VHF AM radio, found on the frontmost left of the pedestal (the panel reads VHF COMM' over a frequency window). This set can be tuned between 116MHz and just below 150MHz, and thus is usually the one to use for ATC. The frequencies are dialed in using your mouse wheel on the two knobs underneath the shown frequency. Don't forget to right-click the left knob once to switch it on!

 

'2' selects the UHF radio; its controls are found below (or behind, you know what I mean) the VHF radio. Mind you, there is the VHF NAV receiver in between them, though. The UHF one is looking a little more complicated and works frequencies between 225 and 400Mhz. That's outside the usual ATC bands, but where most of the 'combat flight' frequencies are. It's mostly used to speak to wingmen and other flights.

For it to work the right knob has to be set to 'T/R' or 'T/R +G', standing for 'transmit / receive +guard'.

 

The '1' setting at last selects the VHF FM radio, which is located on the right side of the pedestal, a bit up-front. It's frequencies lie between 30 and 75MHz. Perhaps leave that for stage two. It's mostly used for communication with ground forces and for homing beacons. That can get important for some missions (Ebrus Rescue for example).

I have managed to contact ground crew and also ATC by using the VHF AM and setting the proper frequency of home airport, I was trying againg also today on another multiplayer server but the ATC did not respond, frequency was 123.000 so I put that frequency but the ATC gave me no reply....do I have to use any microphone trigger to let it work?
