Does water create background "clutter" like terrain does, or is there no return to the radar. DCS and RL.

Ok here goes.

Against a pulse doppler radar like most of our modern DCS Aircraft when you notch you are actually putting you velocity of closure into the Radars Notch . The radar has the notch else all the ground would appear as a target as it is moving towards you at your Velocity. So simply put you are notching the Radar and ground clutter has no bearing at all. Better more modern Radar have smaller notches.

Against a Pulse Radar (No Doppler) Mig21 and F5E then it does have an effect, as against a smooth sea a good operator can pick up a target in Pulse mode.

Caveat, all real life stuff and I havent spent enough time testing to see how this is modelled in DCS so your mileage may vary

I was under the impression that going low and 90* to enemy radar was how to do this. Going low is not necessary?

Going low should make a difference. I'm pretty sure 4th gen radar is smart enough to apply Doppler filter in look down but not apply filter in look up. If radar is not rejecting a certain velocity shift with a sky background then it is useless to try to hide in this rejection band.

Here's my favourite notching video to help wrap your head around it in dcs:

Doom- that is the video I watched that made me wonder about in my OP. Do you get the same effect over water as he shows over land?
