Hi there!

I was wondering if the range information on the HUD at the moment you lock on a radar exist in real life? Radar ranges in passive mode are not possible AFAIK and the SU-25 seems to know very easily. I know it uses a special pod for this, but was wondering if in real life its the same.

Thanks.

Uncertain, but it's more than just a 'passive sensor'. They generally detect very specific frequencies and types of radar, which are often unique to specific SAM systems (thus it being able to identify it). Logically, if you know enough about the radar directed at you, you could estimate range from signal strength.

I believe F-18 Growlers triangulate position precisely by three aircraft spreading out to measure the signal from multiple angles, but theoretically you could get a ballpark estimate as long as you knew what a radar was and its expected signal strength at certain ranges.
